I'm speculating that there could eventually be a situation based on grading date.FormerReader wrote:greg wrote:

before the flood of them (only 19 graded from 2002 to 2008), versus those graded after (85 and counting, from 2009 to present).

If that ever does happen, the distinction could spill over into the 9.6s.
A CGC 9.6 Harbinger #1 slabbed before 2009 might be identical to a CGC 9.8 Harbinger #1 graded after 2008.
(...or if the money is there, expect a few people to try re-grading to see what happens.)
I agree with what you say with respect to the grading stiffness, but I would be surprised to see a price distinction. I'm not aware of there ever being a distinction in any other book has there? I would think there may be some people who would be more selective on buying one 9.8 over another, but that has always been true.
It has existed for years in the form of 'old label' versus 'new label' for the general CGC market... but it hasn't been easy to track.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the grade date as a factor in the future.
It would require an analysis that isn't currently done (to my knowledge), but it doesn't mean it can't/won't happen.

Re: Harbinger #1 CGC 9.8s on eBay (past and current auctions
I'm not sure I've followed your entire line of reasoning. Are you saying CGC is thought to be less strict in their grading standards now than they used to be, and as a result the earlier slabbed books are more respected as possibly being more strictly and accurately graded? (Not that I haven't heard rumblings that they are more lax in their grading than they used to be. I just never considered it as a basis for possible value differences in slabbed books. I haven't followed CGC as closely as some have.)greg wrote:I'm speculating that there could eventually be a situation based on grading date.FormerReader wrote:greg wrote:

I'd say that generally, CGC has been seen as being variable in terms of strictness for grades, with ups and downs in the 13 year history.StarBrand wrote:I'm not sure I've followed your entire line of reasoning. However, the "rise of pressing" has occurred primarily after the use of 'old labels', so books slabbed with the old labels are often considered "pressing candidates" for raising the grade.
For key issues, an increase of just 0.2 can be thousands of dollars, so people are definitely interested in those possibilities based on grade date.

That does make sense, regarding the rise of pressing aspect and how it ties into different CGC labels.greg wrote:I'd say that generally, CGC has been seen as being variable in terms of strictness for grades, with ups and downs in the 13 year history.StarBrand wrote:I'm not sure I've followed your entire line of reasoning. Re: Harbinger #1 CGC 9.8s on eBay (past and current auctions
It is an interesting thought. Are old labels thought to be more strictly graded or do you think that collectors think the books are less likely to have been pressed (i.e. restored is some peoples opinion)? Where would the cut-off on a higher value for grade date end? I think it more goes to the long used saying "buy the book not the grade". CKB told me that when I asked him for advice on buying a Harbinger #1 in 9.8.greg wrote:I'm speculating that there could eventually be a situation based on grading date.FormerReader wrote:greg wrote:

I think we both agree that Harbinger #1 is a unique book because of the books defects and I believe that CGC did not give copies with defects a 9.8 in the early days, but having said that I'm sure there are plenty of copies that have been graded 9.8 in the last couple of years that are as much of a 9.8 as an old label is.
I think the factor is always going to be understanding the book you are buying and all issues to look for specific to that book. If I found a copy of Harbinger #1 with good staple placement and no spine splitting then I would pay a premium for that book over a 9.8 with those defects. The date is not as important to me.

Re: Harbinger #1 CGC 9.8s on eBay (past and current auctions
I wonder if they are generally striker on the first books they grade in any issue when it comes to a printing defect. Such as some pre unity Magnus books. There are some that the corner "chip" is on every copy I have ever seen. I wonder if that would have been graded done at first but as they say more and screening became common they realized it is a printing defect and not damage.

An easy way to see this, would be for a member who has an old label Harbinger #1 CGC 9.8 to post a scan to a more recently graded one and see if there is a difference.

Can you imagine how the people who paid over $1,000 just 4 years ago feel about the price decrease for this book? I paid $500 for a copy in 2011 and I kick myself for not waiting.

Collecting graded comics as an investment probably isn't the brightest idea. But if you love them enough, it's worth whatever you paid for it.
Personally, I collect graded unopened GI Joes from the 80s. I just liquidated the 1982-1985 figures to buy my new house. I made ~10% profit all in all. I lost on several, and won on others. The most important thing is I loved em while they were mine.
