Final Crisis is absolutely horrible. It's the worst "big" mini-series DC has ever done.

Ok. You've said that twice now about Morrisson's writing. What do you mean by that?

From what I've heard, most readers don't know what the heck happened. Is that not failing as a writer?

Since he's describing Final Crisis, I'd say he means "ambiguous" or "unintelligible".

I can't characterize what most people mean when they say things, positive or negative, but generally speaking people dislike what isn't spoon fed to them. That said, I don't at all suggest there aren't people who know exactly what occurred and simply didn't like it, or even hated it. Labeling something as unreadable however generally says as much about the reader than it does the writer, and usually just means somebody didn't enjoy the work and is practicing at hyperbole.

I'm not trying to make a comparison but some people enjoy Eco and some people enjoy Dan Brown. Word-for-word, Morrison chooses hia as well as anyone. There is this odd opinion that Morrison is just throwing stuff up on a page but actually the man is very precise, and his world are actually much less transparent in this series and mean EXACTLY what he says. They are a part of the story instead of just being vehicles to get to the middle or end of it.

I think the last book suffers from inking issues more than anything else.

I just find it hard to believe that anybody who reads out of comics and has read even the slimmest catalog of required reads have difficulty with the writing itself. That doesn't mean total knowledge of characters etc - as I don't know a lot of the players or their past (I'm rather new to DC0 but I admire the epic nature of the tale and vignettes he takes. It's bold, it's refreshing, and I'd agree it probably failed - the majority of comic book readers probably still want Secret Wars (which is cool!).

I see a lot of elements (and characters) I don't know, but it makes me want to some research, read other thoughts, and no I don't think it's failing as a writer if not everybody or the majority don't get what you're laying down. Some people go it, and stuff I didn't know was nicely filled in for me via other outlets , I read it again, and it's even better. It's okay to be ignorant, correct yourself, and try again. A lot of people just stop at #1 too easily.
God Machines and singing Superman Rules!!!!

Maybe I do need to read this after all. Maybe the library will have it eventually. I can't pay money for a god machine and singing Superman.

I just finished All Star Superman.

It was pretty good.

I loved the introduction. Superman's story in 8 words. nice.

Quite Frankly, the art was terrific.

All Star Superman was superb. Great writing, neat stories and fantastic art by Quitely. It really had that pre-crisis feel to it. It's sad that these two aren't still producing stories.

I read the story when it first came out years ago, but then sold the whole MCP series.
I bought the tpb last fall, though I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Maybe after I'm done with Fables and Jack :hm:

Just about to kick back with Deep Sleeper #4.

Read the first 3 but needed a break as it is very deep. Very well thought out theologically and with a real, base, primal breakdown of a lot of subjects like family and death as well as an exploration into the nature of reality in conjunction with and in spite of the human imagination. It is difficult to explain but very easy to recommend.

SPOILERS

It's great. When I first started it, it was pretty tough to get through the funeral issue (#2 I think). After that issue, I got really interested starting with the Doc Manhattan issue (#3?). Then I started to flip back through the book to catch things that I missed or to look up repeated panels throughout the book and whatnot. When I started doing that, it was a fun read. It's definitely a phenomenal piece of work.

However, I'm a little bummed that this book has become known or given the tag as the greatest graphic novel of all time. Although this is an outstanding work, I do not feel that it is representative of the medium.

Watchmen will appeal to comic readers due to it's legendary status and probably to people who enjoy good literature, but I don't think it's going to appeal to alot of average people who are just looking to check out their first comic ever. If I had never read a comic before and I asked someone to recommend a book to me, Watchmen would probably be the recommendation that alot of people would make. If this was the first comic I ever read, there's a pretty good chance that I would be turned off to the medium.

It's a long read. The were too many newstand scenes for me. It seemed like whenever I was really getting into the book, I'd turn the page and it would be a newstand scene along with a pirate story. I understand that the newstand scenes served to fill readers in on the socio-political environment, but there were just too many of them repeating the same things. This piece of the story was probably necessary when it was being released in single issues though.

The pirate story - There were spots where I very much enjoyed the pirate story because it really did fit and blend well with the actual story or even a few spots where it moved the story along, but there were other parts where it seemed like Moore was just babbling to forcefully juxtapose the pirate story alongside the actual story in the book. Did the pirate story really serve any point? It's neat, but that's not what I want in a comic.

There were things that were in there that I didn't really see a reason for other than to add something artsy such as Marish sketching a vagina in issue 8 or 9. I didn't get that. This book would make an interesting study for a college class as far as racism, sexism and agism. I had to do that for a film in school. I chose Driving Miss Daisy. If I had to do it on a book, it would be Watchmen.

If this was my first comic, I probably wouldn't have made it past the second issue and might never feel inclined to pick up another comic again..... especially if I read the backmatter. So that's why I'm a little disappointed that this is the book that's considered the best graphic novel of all time. It's just not representative of the medium on whole.

It will be interesting to see what makes it into the movie. I can't see how they would work the pirate story in there and actually make it good. I hope they didn't try.
