That's awesome!!! It's all I could think of when I saw that panel.JustinJordan wrote:I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to put that in there. Who nailed Daddy Darque to the tree (so he could have the Lyceum vision)?

It's funny how many shared pop-cultural references comic book guys have in common.

Can Shadowman #0 be a Eisner Award candidate for 2013?

Looking at the past winners, no. It's a good comic but it is not in that level.drmirage wrote:Can Shadowman #0 be a Eisner Award candidate for 2013?

I know this is going to sound totally contrived, but that's *exactly* what I thought when I saw the panels/read what he was doing - I sat there and thought "This is a lot like Odin's sacrifice for power".JustinJordan wrote:I can answer that, but it's not exciting - servants. I guess there are some advantages to living in Europe and knowing more about various countries' mythologies than pop-culture references

Re: Shadowman #0 Discussion
Something occurred to me:
Did Sandria *actually* die? I mean, properly?
I just wonder, because you remember all that stuff that Darque's dad said about "You can't bring things back from the dead because you just get a mockery of proper life"? I just wonder that if she actually died, sort of like 'all the way' dead, then regardless of how much power Darque used, he'd still just end up bringing her back as a 'mockery' right?
I think we can pretty much take it for granted that in future Shadowman stories going ahead she's going to be a coherent, 'living' being, so it stands to reason that during the ritual, she didn't *actually* completely die, perhaps just came really close. I can't recall if during the magic fight sequence between Darque and his dad a doorway to Lyceum actually opened: if the doorway never actually opened then that would suggest Sandria didn't actually die.
When Darque absorbed all the life energy from everything around him, was that to restore her life energy just before she died?
My memory is a bit hazy on all this, so can anyone offer any thoughts?

Re: Shadowman #0 Discussion
I took it as he took the necroromantic energy from all the people nearby and used it to sever the connection to Lyceum they'd conjured and also to heal Sandria. She seemed on the brink of death as opposed to actually dead.Shadowman99 wrote:Something occurred to me:

I DO hope that was Nettie... she's too cool not to use and her being a housemaid way back when would be less on the nose than her being a servant type now.

I just reread it again today, and I'd have to say that like Wesley in The Princess Bride, she was only mostly dead - but not quite entirely.Shadowman99 wrote:Did Sandria *actually* die? I mean, properly?

This was perhaps the best Valiant issue yet. Great story and art. Justin great work and I'm looking forward to seeing where you are taking Shadowman. I love the nuisance of Valiant villains. Toyo is not a traditional villain and I thought Darque would be more of just a truly evil person but after #0 I feel a little bad for him. It was his nature and nurture - the kid never had a chance.

I just thought Darque was angry because his taco shell broke and it all fell in his lap whilst he was eating out one day... I can understand how that experience can affect a personThe Dirt Gang wrote:...I thought Darque would be more of just a truly evil person but after #0 I feel a little bad for him. That sounds like every taco I've ever eaten. Worth genocide, every one.The Dirt Gang wrote:Shadowman99 wrote:I just thought Darque was angry because his taco shell broke and it all fell in his lap whilst he was eating out one day... That must have been some kind of taco. A taco so tasty it's worth unleashing Deadside upon the world.

More likely a very hot/greasy taco. Nothing gets a necromancer more upset than burning his crotch and ruining his ritual garb in one fell swoop. The Dirt Gang wrote:Shadowman99 wrote:I just thought Darque was angry because his taco shell broke and it all fell in his lap whilst he was eating out one day... And to think of all the misery that would have been spared if he'd just known of soft-shell tacos. Hot/greasy tacos definitely unleash Deadside within me (and my wife would also say without).lorddunlow wrote:More likely a very hot/greasy taco.
