I think if I purge my wife's and my joint pull list, the Buffy books will probably get the axe. I liked Spike and the bugs at first but even that is getting old.

I am sad that they never followed through on the Drusilla mini-series.
Sorry to further de-rail Saga, but I have to say I was buying Buffy Season 8 primarily for my wife to read, though I liked it too. She stopped reading about 1/2 way through the s8 books [and she is a nut for Buffy], and I decided not to pick it up anymore once s8 was done. It got pretty awful at the end of that arc, I thought.

Pleasant trend for a quality book.

Saga is a good illustration of why I read comics, serial fantasy with a real voice that might be too risky to do in another visual media (see also: Prophet).

Just finished Vol. 1. I really enjoyed it. Scifi fantasy on a grand scale, universe building, compelling characters with intriguing backgrounds, multiple plot threads weaving together...I can see why so many people call this the best of 2012.

It's got a touch of "dirty alien sex" a la Prophet, another big Scifi epic from this year, but with way more storytelling to make it work. I felt Prophet was just trying too hard to do too much, in an ADD/scatter-brained kind of way that needed to be reigned in.

While there are a ton of crazy concepts in Saga, it all works together much better as part of a larger tapestry. I will definitely be picking up the trades from here on out.

I also hear great things about Manhattan Projects and may need to check that out, as well.

I read the trade and thought "meh". But it was still interesting enough to keep going. I picked up issues 7 and 8 and I am glad I did. The interaction with Marko's parents has been great so far.

My guess is this thing goes until it's over. Vaughn has said this is a very personal story, so take that for what it is worth.

The only comment I've heard pointing at a number is he said he plans it to be longer than YtLM and Ex Machina combined. I expect that we'll get at least a solid 10 years worth of books and probably more.

Considering one of, if not the, central characters is a newborn baby, that leaves practically endless possibilities for years to come.

I don't think he's got Sim/Willingham ideas like they did/do about Cerebus or Fables, but I could see this thing going 12-15 years. On a similar note, I was talking to the owner of the LCS I visit and he is convinced Chew will not last 60 issues. He's convinced it will go on until the sales drop. I told him Layman has stated it could be the # 1 book in the business and he'd still end it at 60, so...

Just love the balls comics have to end something when they are "hot" rather than keep them going forever.

From some of Layman's comments in the past, he has said for certain that it WILL go 60. I believe they've already made enough cash off of it to go the whole way. Being optioned didn't hurt. It's another book that doesn't light up the singles, but the trades are very strong. Last month alone, they sold 2,000 trades and it wasn't even a trade release month.

I tried explaining that to the guy and he didn't believe me. Oh well. I think he has other issues w it, given he's called the series "Gruesome and vulgar" more than once.

I kind of want to get into this series from the reviews but the books are already pretty expensive to buy into first editions.
