I hear ya, that is why I always put that (IMO) In My Opinion out there.
But I differ with you in respect of Marvel comics. Personally, I enjoyed Marvel comics back then, but that was mainly attributed to the X-Titles. I was really into the X-Men back then along with The Avengers and Captain America.
The ONLY DC titles that I have ever really liked were/are Batman and Detective Comics.
I do think that Jim knew the difference in managing comics and managing a business and IMO, I think you have to be one or the other. And I say this because I remember speaking with a 'doing well' LCS owner back at Fort Bragg, NC in the early 90s... as we spoke he said that initially he was doing very poorly. He finally came to the realize that he started the LCS as a comic collector... and when cool freebies came in, he kept them for himself. He then stopped doing that and treating it just like a business, while yes still reading the comics but the 'business' had to be 'treated like a business'. But I think Jim (ok second/third hand knowledge here) knew that it would evolve someday to marketing the IPs into action figures, video games etc. That part, I would hope he would have farmed out to other employees or outsourced in somebody experienced to conduct such actions. But first and foremost, I hope/think that Jim would have remained editor in chief... and yes, loads of titles makes continuity difficult but Jim would have handled it just fine.
I am not saying I ONLY like pre-Unity titles, hell I was reading right up until Chaos Effect and then stopped reading. Good thing because we know that 90% of VALIANT titles started circling the drain. One thing I am VERY grateful for is something from Bob Layton. Bob is seen by certain camps as being the reason VALIANT went down the crapper... but I believe he said in an interview that he was not in total control of what happened near the end and with that he wrote the final issue of XO-Manowar (and if you have not read that last issue, please stop reading NOW)....
and cured the whole mess by doing the J.R. stunt... Aric (XO-Manowar) woke up and had dreamed the entire VALIANT universe. He was back in his old time, which predates Selesky from gaining his powers through the 'wish machine' that he had built, and thus null and voiding everything that had been written. This is why I can't figure out why the VEI boys didn't know 'where to begin' or there was all this debate, oh after 1999 (Shadowman's death), re-write the whole thing, blah blah blah... Layton left the VALIANT universe WAY open to be put into print again someday after the nuclear fallout !!! It was brilliant !!! If you consider the fact that everything had been dreamed by Aric, you can start any way you want. That might knock out a few of the foolish things that were written about in the latter issues but it is a clean slate.
Me ? I would have started VALIANT with a brief re-telling of every title but making it 'up to date'. I know one thing is that I would not have had the original Rai die in Unity. A Rai and the Future Force could have easily been done with the original Rai (whom I like much more than pony-tail dude).
And given what I have written above (I HOPE I got everything correct... if I have gotten something wrong please tactfully let me know), Jim Shooter could have started things back up again, however he wanted and I would feel great about it. Now that is not to say that another writer will do a good job as well, me.... I prefer Shooter and my main theme in my posts here is that 'man, I REALLY wish that Jim Shooter would be at the helm when (if) VALIANT comics hit the streets and I am floored that he slipped away or was LET slip away.
Stick needles in my eyes if I am wrong but who wouldn't like Jim Shooter writing VALIANT comics again ?
And yes, Chiclo I would take ZWH's word on that either, he holds A LOT of good info in the noggin' of his.
Harbingers done Batman style ? Well, Tim Burton ruined every one of the Batman films that he worked on and the rest were just 90 minute long commercials for the toys that would accompany the movies. Odd that you mention that as my wife asked if I would like the old Batman movies on Blu-Ray for Christmas. To which, I gave a thunderous, "Hell no." hehe
Not to digress too far, but I agree... a 1993 Harbinger movie would be terrible (IMO). Even with the 'new news' of a possible Harbinger movie that was announced not long ago... I would be p!ssed as hell if a MOVIE came out before the comics. Now I realize that one of the new owners is a graduate from a film-making college and 'may' have been one of the 'hooks to aquire the money to the VALIANT intellectual properties' but that does not make you a (good) movie producer/maker/writer whatever by just having a very nice diploma. I believe that it would be wise to put out a year's worth of quality comics and see how they are recieved... THEN make your decision to make a movie out of it or not. It COULD be done but I dislike the fact that IPs are bought just so that they can pump out a movie.
I just want good quality VALIANT comics... and Jim Shooter ? Sir, if you are reading this, I wish it was YOU leading the new VALIANT universe.
I look forward to the new Solar and Magnus stories with genuine excitement. And NOT just because of seeing VALIANT in print... that $hit didn't work by producing vintage material TPBs with a few pages of new stuff. I am not so easily satisfied with the scraps that fall on the floor... produce NEW books, how hard can that be ? I mean WHEN were the IPs purchased ? Jim Shooter and Dark Horse have at least two titles coming out fairly soon... is there a $hitload of Chinese math involved here or something ?
Dark Horse was able to do something in a few months what others have failed to do in YEARS (yeah yeah, things were tied up in court... well if you go into a large endeavor, you might want to have bought EVERYTHING and plug all those holes on both flanks and your forward edge of the battle area... i.e be smart)

I enjoyed both Marvel Comics and DC comics back then, but not all Marvel and DC comics, just a select few. So when I say Valiant beat both in Quality, I mean as an entire line, not just select titles.
I enjoyed all the Valiants, not just a select few, and read them even past Chaos Effect, although that was just in a hope they would turn around.
I have great hope for the new DH launch, let's hope we are celebrating come the end of summer!

Agreed.dhudson1 wrote:I enjoyed both Marvel Comics and DC comics back then, but not all Marvel and DC comics, just a select few. So when I say Valiant beat both in Quality, I mean as an entire line, not just select titles.

Amen to THAT, but seeing as how it has taken so long and still nothing to show but a few HC TPBs with a couple of new pages of work... it has definitely put a dent in my anticipation.dhudson1 wrote:I have great hope for the new DH launch, let's hope we are celebrating come the end of summer!
And to be blunt, I do not like that when the IPs were purchased by a long time board member (and other parties) who regularly posted, stopped posting as often. I thought we would have more information than we currently have. I mean, here 'we' are being dully faithful to this defunct line of comics after MANY years, just to be left in the dark on many occasion. Now I may be way off the mark but if it were me, I would have regular posts and have this message board 'in the know' AND take notice of some of the GREAT ideas that have been presented. But we got a big fat, 'we can't really talk about it' yadda yadda. Not only that but at least TWO SDCC Valiant forums, one of the owners of the VALIANT properties sat in the crowd and said NOTHING. Not even an introduction. Again, I may be wrong to feel this but I strongly feel that the board is owed a bit of special treatment and even a monthly status report... even if it is to say, 'we are busy at work and have some GREAT things planned for you guys'. Can you imagine if we were 'thrown a bone' in the form of a sketch or a finished piece of art ? If that were so, I would still have that 'oh wow, I can't wait feeling'. I am feeling sold short after being a faithful fan for years... and I have a pocketful of "hollow promise and vague timetables".
Even with a new TPB, it gives me NO excitement... I am just disappointed across the board and now I am almost certain that I will view any new material as too little too late and biased by the wait and feeling of abandonment. I trust that board members will not 'settle' for those dinner scraps that are out there or planed for the future. Don't jump up and down for a piece of dog poop that has 'VALIANT' stamped on it. Hold this organization's feet to the fire and put out quality comics. F@ck the movie idea, f@ck action figures, f@ck TPBs, f@ck a video game... PLEASE, start with a good, quality comic book. Start with two titles and work up to five... WHATEVER. But I would ask, what would any of us prefer... a new movie, video game etc or new comic books.
My bet is on new comic books. How many years does it take for you to get your $hit together ? How about a valiantfans.com exclusive poster ? Or a nice Christmas card, just to say thank you for your continued support and honest patronage.
Dark Horse has gone into hyperspace and we will see something in May (FCBD). Wouldn't it give you a boner to see a VALIANT comic on the table during this coming FCBD ?
I digress, I really do and I apologize... it is just amazing that Dark Horse is giving us EXACTLY what we want. New hot $hit books about Solar and Magnus. While they are not 'official' VALIANT characters (at this point) but I consider them to be VALIANT and to have Jim Shooter writing them... well, THIS is what I have been waiting for... I never thought that what I have been waiting for VALIANT-wise would come from any other company than VALIANT.
Good job Dark Horse and Jim Shooter. Now if you will please excuse me, I have a boner to take of.

I agree and with new news on my company losing my advisory contract, I do not think that I will be able to attend AGAIN this year.Crow331 wrote:The real question is when will the PREVIEWS come out soliciting the Magnus and Solar books? Its heart breaking to think about the "From the Ground Up" created characters that Shooter and Co created such as A&A & The Eternal Warrior family, X-O Manowar, RAI and more getting left behind in this exciting time
So Excited to see this Promo, I just can't let go..
