Newsstand VALIANTs - just how rare are they?
Anyone have an approximate ratio in how many of these things are out there v/s the direct market copies? And do people here pay a premium for them? I kind of know the answers already, but I need definitive proof. For reasons.

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

I know the price variant books do for sure command a premium.
I've sold them for such.

Re: Newsstand VALIANTs - just how rare are they?
I typed out a Valiant-specific answer, but realized it's speculation.
So, here's my speculation:
Valiant newsstands are rarely seen, and even more rarely in very high grade (9.6+).
Being newsstands, there is a good chance that they didn't sell very well because they were in non-comic shops competing with Marvel and DC household names.
If a large number of Valiant newsstands were fully returned, that is, sent back to some distributor somewhere... then there's always a chance that a large number of Valiant newsstands could flood the market at any time.
If they were truly destroyed, or at least, the front covers ripped somehow, then it's unlikely that we'll see any surprising amounts of Valiant newsstands in the market.
At the moment, the highest back issue prices for Valiant newsstand books have been associated with those which have different cover prices than the direct editions.
This is likely due to the fact that they have two differences... different UPC box and different cover price.
The newsstands which only have a different UPC box are potentially just as "uncommon" (it's hard to call any modern book "rare", so let's say "uncommon" or "relatively rare").
Will they have more significant value in the future versus their direct edition counterparts? Possibly... and if so, possibly even more value for high grade.
The question, though will remain... are the price variants more desirable? Are the key issues the "key" to newsstands (Magnus #64 newsstand, for example)? Or will there be some obscure common issue that is simply impossible to locate that ends up being the most sought after newsstand?
I guess we'll wait and see.

OK, let me put it this way - fans, here, have you paid more and/or do you expect to pay more for a newsstand version over the DM edition?

Re: Newsstand VALIANTs - just how rare are they?
Yes, I have paid more for newsstands. I am always on the lookout for them. As Greg said, high grade would command a premium. I put these in almost the same category as the Nintendo Valiants. They are not too difficult to find, but almost impossible in high grade.slym2none wrote:OK, let me put it this way - fans, here, have you paid more and/or do you expect to pay more for a newsstand version over the DM edition?

Overall the answer is yes. I think ALL newsstand books are more expensive than the non newsstand counterparts.
The real $$$$ is in the 3 Bloodshot price variants and XO price variant.

Count me in as one who will pay a premium for Valiant newsstand editions in high grade. Whenever I'm browsing the bins I always check the barcode on the relevant issues.
I scoop them up even if they are ones I already have. If they are lower grade I'll still buy them for around cover price. They are good for trading for ones I am still looking for.

I'm still missing all of them except the Visitor vs. the Valiant Universe issues. I never see them for sale in 9.4 or above.sonicdan wrote:Newsstand price variants:AnthonyF wrote:Elveen wrote: Overall the answer is yes. I've seen the BS and XO command more price than the others.
The rarest in my experience is the XO book.
