Harbinger Comics in a Movie

Post by siren3-4 »

So I am watching this awesomely weird and dark comedic movie staring Ryan Reynolds . . .

Image

It's really good . . but you have to have a dark sense of humor and not be bothered by violence . . and if you are interested at all, go in as blind as possible . . don't read anything else about it.

The reason I am posting this here though is that the main character (Ryan Reynolds) has some Harbinger (VEI) comic books by his bed. I know Ryan is a huge comic book fan so I have to believe this is him adding this touch to his character. Which means he has to be a Valiant fan because of the subject matter and what it means to his character.

This has to be the first appearance of Harbinger Comics in a movie right . . :)

I believe that you may be right about this being the first time it was in a film. There may have been an advert with Jonathan Ross featuring X-O Manowar maybe?

It could also be a sponsorship thing. Maybe one of the producers asked Valiant to give money to the film, or at least donate a few comics to the production. Adi Shankar, one of the producers, is also a fan of comics, so he could have donated the comics as well.

p.s. The movie was really good. Ryan Reynolds is an extremely talented actor.

One question for you. Bosco or Mr Whiskers?
This is what happens when you try to work...

The not so great movie Comic Book Villains had a comic shop full of old Valiant comics in the background.

VEI should send Reynolds some gold issues. It couldn't hurt, right? :?

It wasn't a bad movie. I used to have it on DVD until I loaned it to a guy at the local comic shop.

As pointed out by Pixierosa elsewhere, the movie Unbreakable has a ton of classic Valiant books in a scene as well - including a few Harbinger issues. It was pretty cool, there were a lot of them in it. Sorry, I don't have the pic to post here to show it.

Just rewatched Unbreakable recently... what a great concept. I'd love to see VEI do a comic like this; a normal guy starts to realize he has super strength and an unbreakable nature... VH1 Shadowman without the costume or spider alien origin.

I haven't seen it in a very long time - I recall enjoying it up to a point but somewhere around the end was a bit of a let down... I should watch it again. Interesting idea & comparison, jmatt - it is a good character driven plot mechanic.
