Ivar, Timewalker #3 Discussion
I really love this issue. It really recovered nicely after meandering through issue 2 a bit.
We're getting a deeper look into who Ivar is, and the plot threads FVL has laid for Neela are beginning to come together.
The scene with a gilad was especially good. His analogy of being a time traveller himself, just in one direction, was great. I also loved his comment about Hitler. It was very similar to something my high school history teacher once said about him and I think rings very true, especially coming from a character who has lived through so many genocides over the centuries.
And the Henry art is brilliant as usual.

I love Clayton Henry's art. But this issue shows what a difference the inker can make. Sheesh. About halfway through, the art changes and not for the better. It is from the inking. Clayton stops inking his own work and subs out to someone.
The story was intriguing, although doesn't really revel or advance anything too much. But I give FVL credit, lots of amazing dialogue, both funny and serious.

Yeah the art gets rough towards the end. The inks and the coloring seem to suffer for 2-3 pages. The usual clean Henry style seemed muddled. Besides another inker ... Looks like there was another colorist other than Reber on the book.Bone-A-Fach-ee wrote:I love Clayton Henry's art. But this issue shows what a difference the inker can make. Sheesh. That aside .. I thought it was another strong issue.

Terrific issue. An interesting plot, fabulous Henry pencils and art overall, funny and engaging characters, a strong female lead, a boon reference...
FVL is doing great!

Re: Ivar, Timewalker #3 Discussion
I like this issue much better than the first 2. It just seemed to flow really nice. I also noticed the change in inking toward the end. I like the dialogue and the way that it tied back to the boon. I like that Time Walker does not have to be connected to any book chronologically since it basically exists in its own timestream. Wherever they go- there they are. It is the regular books that do not have time travel that it is getting difficult to understand where they are on the timeline.

Re: Ivar, Timewalker #3 Discussion
There were a few odd points for me this issue in regards to art not quite matching what I would expect from the situation the characters are experiencing.
I don't have the book in front of me, but the panel where Hitler needs a doctor - one soldier is exclaiming that Hitler needs medical help, but his body language isn't really reflecting that. I'd assume that if your head cheese is dying, you're going to be a bit more panicked or concerned. This guy was just sort of standing there.
Not a knock on Henry. Maybe that line was scripted after the art was drawn. And either way, really not a big deal.
Love this series so far. This and divinity I'd recommend highly to friends without hesitation. Heck, I'd even refer them to my enemies!

The panel with Neela getting sick is a little odd, too... why would she have all that coming out of her chin instead of her mouth?Donovan wrote:There were a few odd points for me this issue in regards to art not quite matching what I would expect from the situation the characters are experiencing.

Funny, I thought the same thing. The pose is a tad too nonchalant.Donovan wrote:I don't have the book in front of me, but the panel where Hitler needs a doctor - one soldier is exclaiming that Hitler needs medical help, but his body language isn't really reflecting that. ivar's reaction to being caused of lying was very funny.

I might be in the minority but I think I like this series better than A&A so far. Maybe it's the time travel element, but I feel like I'm watching Time Bandits again minus the midgets.

I'm really enjoying this. Intrigued by Neela. Essentially I'm wondering is she is a future Hitler, which is why Ivar is intervening in her life....

Loving this series. Time travel has so many possibilities it's easy to get stuck in the place-setting and sci-fi aspects so it's good to read a book that has a central intent on establishing and writing the best characters for the story.

Well, I just pre-ordered the first volume of this book, for while this series has been quite entertaining to read so far, I think that I'll find all this wibbly-wobbliness better digested in one sitting.

I think this may be my favorite Fred Van Lente written book and makes me think I should read Archer and Armstrong again and more closely. A wasn't crazy about the humor or some of the over the top silliness in A&A and that kind of colored the experience of the book for me, but I think if I read it again all at once I'll appreciate it better.
Loving this series big time!!!

Re: Ivar, Timewalker #3 Discussion
I challenge you, should you re read A&A, when you find something over the top, dig deeper into its actual historical background. Things like the Gnomes of Zurich and the Black Block have real origins in history. FVL is a lover of history and all things strange and often works them into his stories.Tim wrote:I think this may be my favorite Fred Van Lente written book and makes me think I should read Archer and Armstrong again and more closely. Yes, even the Hashish Eaters are historically based on a secret society of assasins that became the origin of the word assassin (hashasin).

The series continues to clip along and for this reader is equal so far to FVL's Archer and Armstrong run - which is saying a lot. Excellent work.

I enjoyed the Gilad parts a lot too; I think it added extra context and he was the perfect character to do just that.BugsySig wrote:...The scene with a gilad was especially good. I like FVL's outright commentary on social media spoken between the lurker and Neela.
