Anyone have any print run info or guesses on Ultraverse Gold print runs? Were they incentive variants, and if so, anyone know what the ratio was?

Re: Ultraverse Golds
Regular silver holos were 5,000 each. According to Scott Mitchell Rosenberg (he was publisher at Malibu) at SDCC a couple of years ago, he paid out of his own pocket for print runs of 200 each for the gold holograms. There was no pattern to their distribution except as goodwill awards (kind of how VEI gives out books to say "thanks"). Ultraforce gold is a different deal, there were 5,500 of those. A lot of the incentive books were stored in a closet at the Malibu offices, and I heard that a number were chucked out or carried off when they closed down.StarBrand wrote:Anyone have any print run info or guesses on Ultraverse Gold print runs? Re: Ultraverse Golds
So they are really, really rare, but it's also not out of the realm of possibility that somebody has a huge stack of them.

Re: Ultraverse Golds
I'd be looking to trade/buy golds if anyone has one they'd part with....like depluto said, VHTF.
Re: Ultraverse Golds
Why are these so cheap? (2.99 ea) Are there different types of Ultraverse golds?

Re: Ultraverse Golds
The 200 print run golds I was talking about were the gold hologram covers for the first seven Ultraverse books that were launched. They also had silver holos (5000 each) and Ultra 5000s (Silver foil on cover, 5000 each).StarBrand wrote:Why are these so cheap? (2.99 ea) Are there different types of Ultraverse golds?

After the initial launches they would still put out occasional limited variants but I have never seen print runs for those. That's what is in the auction you posted ... there was one for every one of the Phoenix Resurrection books, four in total I think. They also did occasional limited books for stuff like Ultraforce 2, Foxfire 1, Lord Pumpkin 4. Kind of random.
Read my blog for a lot of info and pictures I was able to cobble together.

I saw a few of the Phoenix Resurrection Gold books in a dollar box at a local show. Had no interest. That's how common they are.

Re: Ultraverse Golds
I fished a full run of Phoenix Resurrection gold books out of a 3 for $1 box so that establishes a lower limit for the value.Brother J wrote:I saw a few of the Phoenix Resurrection Gold books in a dollar box at a local show. Had no interest. That's how common they are.
I would heavily advise against actually reading Phoenix Resurrection. It is worse than Godwheel.

Re: Ultraverse Golds
I emailed a seller recently asking if his books were silver/gold. He told me they only made silver, and thought gold books would look nice.

The last seven gold hologram covers (not counting Ultraforce) that were sold on eBay have all gone for $40 and up.

Re: Ultraverse Golds
I would love to see a relaunch of the Ultraverse for a number of reasons, including so it could shake all these old books free from wherever they are being stored.

Some interesting stuff on Rosenberg on his Wikipedia page (especially some of the recent links on there to news stories).

Re: Ultraverse Golds
You just have to read it. Especially the comments on some of the stories.

And you know something? I still think that the Ultraverse had a lot of great stories to tell if Marvel hadn't ripped the soul out of it
Hardcase and Sludge ended on complete cliff hangers because of it

Indeed. Sludge is my favourite of those UV books pre-Marvel and its BS BS; especially Aaron Lopresti's art.omega_override wrote:Hey, if there's a story worth telling, people will followStarBrand wrote:Wow! Re: Ultraverse Golds
Sludge was kind of shocking to me because of how well written it was (I've only really known Gerber previously from Howard The Duck & it's Marvel Max successor), there's also a very definite atmosphere of Image comics about it, namely Spawnleonmallett wrote:Indeed. It is a great read, and it definitely had a vibe I don't think either DC or Marvel (then or now) would go for.
