Valiant Commissions - Ideas & suggestions wanted

I need some ideas or suggestions for some commissions. But a little (or long) back story first.

Starting a couple of years ago I finally started get sketches at cons instead of just having my copies of Les Daniels’ Marvel & DC hardcovers signed. These sketches plus some commissions have all been of Starman (Jack Knight) & The Mist.

But recently I received a nice email from SonicDan commenting on my Valiant & Acclaim gallery on the Comic Art Fans site. This made me realise that it had been a few years since I had done anything involving Valiant, apart from picking up a few comics.

The email also arrived at an appropriate time because I was arranging a commission done by Charles Barnett II. So instead of a Starman/Mist commission I arranged for a Valiant one. I originally thought about getting one of Turok & X-O Manowar but looking on Comic Art Fans saw there were already a few commissions of them there. Decided instead to go for something different with another couple of characters I liked & had never seen any commissions or sketches of. Those characters are Livewire & Stronghold.

I’ll still try to get Starman/Mist sketches at the cons, but decided to try to split the commissions I get between Starman and Valiant characters.

I was looking through the Valiant cards I saw that Livewire & Stronghold had featured on one of the First Appearance cards. This prompted me to think about getting commissions/sketches featuring all the characters that appeared on these cards. But thought of something that it’s probably even more ambitious, instead decided to try to get commissions/sketches featuring the major characters from all the major books.

Already have a Bloodshot by Bernard Chang. So hoping to get some done by other Valiant artists, but most will be done by non-Valiant artists. I already have a couple of artists I’m thinking of, including a few who do colour commissions.

The next person I’m might get a commission from is Tom Derenick. I’m currently waiting for prices, but in a previous email I mentioned the characters of Shadowman, X-O Manowar or Ninjak. But now I’ve started thinking other characters like Geomancer (Clay McHenry) or Timewalker.

Sorry for the long backstory.

So anyone have any ideas or suggestions for the next commission, or for any artists & which characters they should do for other future commissions.

I'm always partial to Darque but I've never had one done for myself. I guess I feel like the artist really needs to have a good understanding of the character to do a good job and I've never been sure they were knowledgeable.

Looking forward to hearing peoples thoughts on this though.

I'm of two minds with this.
There are some characters I'm automatically thinking that I want done by the artist who worked on them, like Bob Hall doing either Shadowman or Darque.
But then I'm also looking forward to seeing what the non-Valiant artists will do, seeing the characters done in a different style.

Quite a few characters on the list, but I had a criteria for making the list.
1 - If a character had their own title then they automatically made the list
2 - The character appeared across a number of titles or played a major role in a story line

I realise that there are probably still characters that could be on the list but were left off.

For some of the characters, like the Spider Aliens or the Bionisaurs, I realise that they wouldn't make for good commissions by themselves so I'm going to try to pair them up with other characters.

It will be interesting to see if I can complete this list.

I jinxed myself mentioning Tom Derenick so I'm going to try not to mention an artist until I have a completed piece in hand.

I've arranged with Nicola Scott for a sketch to be done & collected at Oz Comic-Con. It will be larger than the usual head sketches that she does at cons, I think it might be about 11x14 in size. As I already have a head sketch of The Mist from her I'd prefer not to use this one for a Starman related character.

I'm thinking of either getting Eternal Warrior, Geomancer (Clay McHenry), Magnus Robot Fighter or Timewalker. So does anyone have a suggestion of what character I should get Nicola Scott to draw?

Well I was planning on taking a break as I need to save up for some of the multiple character commissions that I want to get completed.
But couldn't pass up on getting X-O (pre-Unity).

Collected this from Bob at Armageddon Expo, Melbourne Australia 13 - 14 October 2012. It was a real pleasure meeting him.


Also got this sketch by Jin Chan Yum Wai. Forgot that I already had a convention sketch of Solar by Kevin VanHook that I picked up on eBay, otherwise I would have got another character instead.

Okay it has been over a year since last posted in this thread.
Updated the list to put Magnus Robot Fighter as On order.
The piece is completed & I've seen a scan just waiting to receive the original.
It is a piece that everyone would recognise as it is a recreation of Magnus Robot Fighter #0 cover.

I'm thinking about the Psi Lords being the next piece to be done.

Here is the next piece in my collection, Rai & The Future Force and with some Maleevs at the edges.
It was done by Paul Mason, writer/artist of The Soldier Legacy.
Next on the list to be done is Sting (Peter Stanchek) & his team (Kris, Flamingo, Zephyr & Torque). It's being done by another Aussie.
I thinking of getting next commission done by Ben Dunn. But trying to decide what character to pick. At the moment thinking either Ninjak, Rai or The Visitor fighting Harbinger.
Anyone have any suggestions?

How about Shadowman by Bob Hall. Bob does the best commissions with a pretty quick turnaround at a very fair price.
