Re: New 52 - I am almost done....
I'll give credit to DC for one thing that they've done better than Marvel of late and that is, a diversity of genres within their line. Superheroes, war, noir, supernatural, western, space, etc, since Dido took over, they have done better in showing the breadth of the DCU.
For example, yes, they just cancelled All-Star Western but that brought to an end Palmotti and Gray's writing of Jonah Hex after more than a decade. That's a helluva an accomplishment in today's industry.
Marvel may highlight certain genres within their solo titles but there's nothing really specific (for example, you have the Dark line of magic/horror titles yet where is my Doctor Strange solo title???) It bugs me that a good portion of their titles is Avengers-related in some form or fashion.

Cyberstrike while I liked some aspects of man of Steel, that last fight scene totally ruined the movie for me as well. Superman is a symbol of hope, and I try to think of him when I am struggling with something petty. The fact that superman was more concerned with kicking the crap out of Zod instead of saving the people of the city, showed incredible ignorance about the fundamental nature of that character that quiet frankly I am surprised DC let them do it, or maybe not seeing the direction they have been moving.

Re: New 52 - I am almost done....
In my recent return to comics (about a year or so), I been careful not to get swept up in Marvel and DC. So I decided to pick up Justice League (mostly due to my appreciation for Jim Lee's art) like I did in the past. As for Marvel I tried to get into the Ultimate line. I took advantage of some bundle sales and got myself all caught up.
Anyway, I haven't really been happy with JL or even the new Ultimate books. I think I've just outgrown the cliche superhero stuff. It's hard to get excited about these books with they don't change that much. Superman is never going die or leave earth forever. Marvel tries harder with new characters like Miles taking over Spider-man role, but in the end it doesn't change much. Other thing is I always feel like I'm missing something if I don't read other titles these characters show up in. I shouldn't have to read JLA, JLD or JLE2 to get the whole story. It feels less like story and more like product placement, the characters being the products.
I guess it's unfair when I compare JL and Ultimate Spider-man with books like Lazarus, Saga or The Walking Dead. Heck I think Invincible is better superhero book than anything Marvel and DC publishes. I've learned that regardless of the quality of the book, not all comics are for everybody.
So I will be wrapping up my series with Justice League when current storyline with Lex Luther ends. I gave up on the new Ultimate line books after the first issues. The price of $4.99 is ridiculous for a book that gives me a sliver of the story. I wasn't wow'd enough to keep going.

Yeah look at Superman II when became clear to Superman that fighting Zod and company was going to destroy Metropolis he retreats to the Fortress of Solitude and he tricks them and Lex Luthor and defeats them where the damage was to the Fortress of Solitude itself and Superman destroys it to make sure Zod and company can't escape or ever be found.
In Man of Steel Superman's actions and stupidity helps to destroy both Smallville and Metropolis killing hundred of thousands if not millions.

Re: New 52 - I am almost done....
It's not that I hate dislike or even hate grim dark stories, series, or characters, but it's the lack of any happiness and hope that the characters seem to have in the New 52 now of days that is my problem. Also like anything else it does get old and not every character needs to be grim, humorless, brooding, emos sure that works for Batman but it doesn't work with characters like Harley Quinn and Superman.nycjadie wrote:Personally, I prefer the dark tones of DC now. I've noticed a gradual move in that direction since ROTDK.
Superman is supposed to be inspirational hero to appeal to our better nature. Superman is about being a realistic optimist. Batman is about being a constant pessimist.
Harley Quinn is nuts. She is supposed to be a funny character who goes to SDCC and gives DCE's editors and fans a good pantsing. I would to see her give Jim Lee a much needed pie in the face and shove a stick of dynamite down DiBio's underwear (I wished she had done that in SDCC special) to remind them that humor is not a bad thing it is basic human emotion.
I'm not against grim dark series at all but I also like series that have a wicked sense of humor as well. I like superheroes with personal lives that are just as interesting as the costume identity is. Hell most times I enjoy the secret identity subplots more and the soap opera aspect of superheroes than the actual superheroes vs. supervillains stories. What I like is balance. Not every character and/or series needs to be just like Batman, nor do they need just be like Harley Quinn (that would be just as unbearable as the grimdark stuff). DC needs that balance. They need to stop making all of their heroes into tragic brooding angst-ridden emos and have some series that have a sense of fun for no other reason than just for hell of it. Even Batman can do with a much needed light-hearted story every now and then.

I've put some thought into this. Did anyone else realize that everyone of the "Nu-Justice League" has a crappy childhood and loss of close family. Basically the other six JL have basically been Batman'dCyberstrike wrote:It's not that I hate dislike or even hate grim dark stories, series, or characters, but it's the lack of any happiness and hope that the characters seem to have in the New 52 now of days that is my problem. That is the same reason why they should have kept Lobo a 90s parody, because if he would be parody of todays comics he would be Batman.
Anyone feeling a Batman-inflation?

Yes thats literally what I mean. Batman everywhere and if not everywhere Batman then Superman must automatically become evil no matter what thats what I've noticed.Thomas wrote:Everything is Batman in the new 52.dornwolf wrote:I've put some thought into this.
