Throw in other books as well. I loved the post you had about Priest and Criss Cross. It was an eye opener for me.

I've always analyzed films but never really done the same with comics. Part of that is because from an early age my dad was sitting me down and analyzing movies with me. So I understand it better as a medium.

I forgot to buy the last Humble Bundle with Saga vol. 3, so until I can get it for pennies an issue again, I won't be reading. It is a fun story with absolutely phenomenal art, but I actually enjoy it much less than any other book that I currently read.

BKV has the crazy ego of Alan Moore without the talent to back it up.

Saga is good, but not great. Comics and film (in my opinion) should be a transparent artistic medium. If you realize what the creators are trying to do (unless you are setting out to analyze the art form specifically and critically), then the director/actors or writer/artist have failed.

Examples:

comic - V for Vendetta, I get completely lost on the experience of reading that book. It is perfect. Even going back and trying to critically evaluate the craft in this book erupts in me just getting lost in the experience again.

film - The Prestige, upon rewatching one can see the entire film is set up exactly like a magic trick - the first image gives the entire surprise away and the first scene describing a magic trick is a guide to the events of the movie. However, the reality of this is unknown until the end of the first time watching.

Reading BKV is like watching a Kubrick film: excellent talent in the craft, but I cannot watch/read their works without it being obvious what they are trying to do. It is frustrating. It takes me out of the experience because I start figuring out what is going on.

Plus, I feel the sex/violence/etc in Saga is completely pointless and for shock value only. (and if you look at my above list of books, I don't typically have a problem with any of that as long as it is contextually important)
