Auctions are interesting. I've found deals but I've also seen books sell for ridiculous prices (more than they would fetch on ebay). People show up with price guides but have no idea of grading....good luck with the ASM's!GGSAE wrote:Well done! Where did you find it? I love hearing these stories of great finds, there's a CGC thread of antique finds and it's amazes how many great deals are still out there.
TMNT # 1 (First Print) $10 - yes, that's not a typo.
Four Color 596 $10
Marvel Family # 1 (coverless) $10
Marvel Zombies # 1 (First Print) $1
Amazing Spiderman # 36 (V2 World Trade Center issue) $1

Re: Bragging rights - your best deal of late?
Alright, so back from the auction, I mentioned there was a complete run of ASM (pics scattered) from 288 to about 325 with a few random issues here and there. There was also a bunch of Web of Spidermans and Spectacular Spidermans. I've been to this auction before, and I've had to wait until the end before they got to the comics, but I did partake in some other stuff. I think a guy running an antique store would have done well because there was a ton of neat stuff. Lots of Coca Cola, tons of toys, barbies, cast iron stuff, etc. etc. I ended up grabbing this box of Pez (all of which are unopened), for $25 for the hell of it...no idea if they're worth anything, but for $25 I couldn't pass it up.hulk181man wrote:Auctions are interesting. Amazing Spiderman # 36 (V2 World Trade Center issue) $1
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65 ... e520ba.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I also grabbed a box of loose star wars action figures, I didn't pay too much for these either so I might have to defer to the toy guys if these are worth anything. Even if they're not, I'll probably just give them to my nephew...
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65 ... 5971b8.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65 ... 5971b8.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So after about 4 hours of brutal stuffy auctions, they finally bring the comics over. He was doing buyer's choice, so you take your pic and they kept 298-300 aside. None of these comics were bagged/boarded but they were still in pretty good shape. He started off the auction of all Spideys at $20, then it dropped down to $5 and there were no bids. I don't know what the auctioneer was expecting but I mean, really $20 a piece? The room was silent at $5, I yell out: $3 buyer's choice, and it ended there. I was able to grab all the ASM's for $3, so I picked every issue you see (I made a point of grabbing the McFarlane's, the wedding issue, and the web of spiderman #1) for that.
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn65 ... 9ee5f2.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So when I was going through them to decide which ones I wanted, the only person that came up to me although there was another guy interested in the comics, was an older lady. She's like, which ones are the most rare? This is a classic example of what you said earlier Hulk, and I've seen it a few times with people that don't know what they're doing, over-paying for issues they think are more valuable. One of the auctioneers was looking at me when she asked, and I'm like...none of them are more rare (that's probably not true, but didn't want to get in a debate with her) than others, I show her my stack and said: "these ones were done by an important artist". She still grabbed a bunch of random Web of Spidermans for $3 each, which I'm sure I'll see on Kijiji for months unsold...
Anyways, it turns out the auctioneer decided not to sell 298-300. I was bummed I couldn't bid on it after being there all that time because I was prepared to pay a decent price for it, but giving how a lot of auctions were going that day he decided not to risk it going for nothing. I left my contact info with them and said I would give $100 for 300 (which I thought was more than fair given the condition of it), and less for the others, as well as $10 for all the random issues that were left behind.

$100 for #300 sounds like overpaying. Unless it's slabbable.
I'm not a toy guy, but those Star Wars toys look like original run toys (particularly some of the ones in bags). I'd think you probably did well on those.

I've checked the sales of this book, I don't think you can get it for under $100 anymore...I don't know *SQUEE* about the star wars toys, they're from the 90s I think, so I don't know how much I can get...I only paid $50 for the lot, so I was probably gonna list them around 100-125...400yrs wrote:$100 for #300 sounds like overpaying. You sure those are all from the 90s? Some of them look like the older figures from the 70s and 80s. You should be able to find dates on the toys, I think. Maybe the feet or somewhere.GGSAE wrote:I've checked the sales of this book, I don't think you can get it for under $100 anymore...I don't know *SQUEE* about the star wars toys, they're from the 90s I think, so I don't know how much I can get...I only paid $50 for the lot, so I was probably gonna list them around 100-125...400yrs wrote:$100 for #300 sounds like overpaying. Right, and I think my 'leave it' price was more than fair considering it wasn't bagged and boarded and will continue to take damage the longer it's in their hands. I understand auctioneers are their to maximize return, but sometimes I wonder if they have any clue on value on some items. There were a number of rare collectibles that went unbid, and also some antique furniture that went for a song-and-dance, so to pull the asm 298-300 made even less sense.Elveen wrote:ASM 300 is more than a $100 book.

Midgrade 300s are $75 dollar books. The high grade raws top out around $175.

Bragging rights - your best deal of late?
Mmmm, I don't think so, man. At least not from what I've seen over the last several months. The average lower-grade raw copy generally runs in the $90-range; so-called NM- to NM books average about $140; and anything even slightly tighter than NM can get pretty friggin' pricey, like this'n that ended just last night for almost $270:400yrs wrote:Midgrade 300s are $75 dollar books. Granted, that was described as a 9.6 to 9.8 copy, so if it truly is, that pricing's pretty much justified, given what it can pull slabbed.
I personally sold three raw copies for an average of about $135 each...and that was four years ago.
If I could get a legitimate high-grade (NM+) to premium (NM/MT) raw copy for $175, I'd snag it in a minute.

Not Valiant, but I did get the Dynamite Magnus #1 1:100 and 1:200 for $10 each. They are signed by Fred Van Lente and come with a COA. I came upon them by chance on eBay and picked up a few more incentive books for close to cover.

I had a bit of a comics fix weekend last week and through various sources picked up a few awesome books for my 1st appearance and Bring on the Bad Guys collections....
One store had an insane 75% off sale. It was like walking into a store set up like a convention guy dumping his inventory. I also picked up a few 60's era issues of the 100 page format Superman's and World's Finest issues.
1st High Evolutionary
1st Ego the Living Planet (this reveal is truly epic - the last panel artwork revealing Ego is Silver Age awesomeness, morbid and just a bizarre old-school photo-manip with B&W art. I highly recommend this one to cosmic fans).
1st Beta Ray Bill
1st Malekith

1st Mongul
1st Mr. Sinister

Thanks man! I'm wondering how long it will be before that book becomes the next "1st of Apocalypse" - especially if Fox does a successful X-Universe. I don't know though - there's only been two X-Men flicks I thought were legitimately good and they haven't done very well with the rest of the Marvel props soooooo.......nycjadie wrote:Nice haul!
