Death Defying Doctor Mirage - Plus Edition

Post by chriskay99 »

Caught this over on editor Alejandro Arbona's tumblr page but haven't seen anything from VEI officially or mentioned elsewhere on these boards --
Check it out! THE DEATH-DEFYING DOCTOR MIRAGE #1 PLUS EDITION, by jenvanmeter and Roberto de la Torre, with 16 pages of extra comics and original bonus content, has the same Travel Foreman cover art as the standard edition, this time amazingly variant-colored by Matthew Wilson!
And those bonus comics and special features are gonna be worth WAY more than the extra buck this thing costs. I’ll have news about those extras coming soon!

Black Science. Lazarus. Birthright. Saga. Manifest Destiny. Deadly Class.

15 more pages of content for a dollar is awesome, imo

but i'm sure there will be people who complain ... :?

Hmmmm .... This leads to a tricky conundrum as I was planning to wait for the trade to pick up this series? I don't think the extra material will be in the TPB.

I'd have paid $1 for the Japan map in Rai. I'm sure something in the Mirage bonus pages will be worth the price of admission.

Looking forward to this - the pullbox plus is a great idea as long as the extra content holds up. We're 1 for 1 on that front so far. :thumb:

These pullbox plus editions tick me off, don't like the idea of them at all.

Yet as somebody who simply wants to be able to see the full picture, I'll probably still end up buying a copy :!:

I find the idea and concept to be awesome. If it's not executed correctly and its 15 pages of filler than I will be disappointed.

XO #25 was an awesome concept ... But the execution and content felt a bit disappointing.

If they were trying to get 6.99 for it it would be one thing but 4.99 is fine for the extra content if you ask me.

Also, about having the plus and the standard version; is this not basically the variant thing in another guise, and a way of getting *some* buyers to pick up more than one copy of a single issue? :?

But if you're averse to buying multiple copies, wouldn't you just buy the one plus sized issue? Why would you "need" the standard version?

me too now.

I was getting "everything cover priced VEI" from Ed, but dropped all but one of each and my pull for VEI is "one of each, you pick the coolest cover unless its a special one, like plus, mask, 8-bit, etc "

Just too many other great books out there...

I personally really like the Rai plus edition, I am sure the Dr. Mirage and others will kick-a$$ as well. Have faith!!

The only down-side is the people who are digital/trades only...
Where are we going and why am I in this hand-basket?

Same difference as a variant cover though (those books have the same content, just 'something' different). This just seems a 'currently' more accepted practice. After X-O 25 I will be more wary about VEI's idea of added value - no plus edition there, but the stuff still felt like filler. This plus edition stuff feels like yet another gimmick, even if a marginally more sophisticated one than variant covers.

Yeah, again, I'm totally with Leonmallet on this one.

Also, why don't I "just buy the one plus sized issue?" Because I have one comic shop within about an 80 mile radius of where I live, and they simply don't order *any* kind of special edition of any comic. So I don't feel I can say "Hey, put Rai and Dr. Mirage on my pull list", and then just not buy the first issue when they put them by for me, and get one off the internet. I'm the only person buying Valiant from that shop. It'd be so obvious if I did that.

I'm afraid I agree with Leonmallet in that I think it's just another gimmick really. I'll buy the plus edition because I want to get the full picture of what's on offer, but it doesn't mean that I like doing it. Essentially, I'll end up with two copies of the comic, because I'll have felt compelled to have bought the 'standard' copy that the shop were kind enough to put by for me, and gotten hold of a plus edition as well. I'm a student, so to me that's just wasting money that could be spent on a good bit of meat at the supermarket instead :!:

Yeah, I'm afraid that's true. They start mumbling things about being part of a chain and not having direct control over stock and stuff like that before inevitably trailing off and hoping desperately that I'll instantly and inexplicably forget the entire conversation and wander back toward the comic shelves in a confused stupor.

However, what tends to happen instead is that I just say something like "No sweat" or whatever so that I don't have to give the guy a hard time over something that's apparently outside his personal control :?

I think in that case I'd tell the shop to tell their main office that a customer specifically requested it, and is going to take all of his business to a shop that will order it for him. They may not go out of their way to get a customer one book, but they might to keep selling that one customer all of the books he buys.
If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.
