Harbinger #23 Discussion - SPOILERS ARE ON (for now)
Just finished... damn, what an issue. I mean besides the anticipated death, *SQUEE* goes down. I am so excited to see how the next several months of fallout resolve, including seeing the impact the arrival of the Armor Hunters has on the Harbinger corner of the Valiant Universe!
As to the death, it just... happens. Sudden. Unfairly. And now this person is gone. But with a nice little send off that makes it all so bittersweet. I find myself comparing this person to their VH1 counterpart, and I just echo what has been written before in interviews with Dysart and the rest of the Valiant Crew - lost potential. Forever.
And yes, for those of you who want to know in advance...
The team member who dies...
... is ....
Last chance, turn back now.
...
Seriously, not kidding, don't read if you don't want it spoiled!!
...
Fine, here you go: .......Flamingo......

I like that there's not some big over-dramatised build-up to the actual moment. Reminds me a bit of how Joss Whedon deals with these things.
The epilogue is a really nice touch too,

That is a real unexpected bummer. To Dysart and the team's credit, it was going to suck no matter who died. Strong stories will do that.

The cover still fooled me!!
Such a great issue. It felt natural, not overplayed or underplayed.
I can't wait for next month.

Re: Harbinger #23 Discussion - SPOILERS ARE ON (for now)
Agreed. In typical Dysart fashion he does the not-so-typical character death issue.kjjohanson wrote:I like that there's not some big over-dramatised build-up to the actual moment. Reminds me a bit of how Joss Whedon deals with these things.
The epilogue is a really nice touch too,
Its sort of quick and sudden and you are left kind of stunned but realize the issue goes on ... and the story moves forward ... and I think that was part of the point. The story goes on .. and there is more work to be done.
The epilogue was great too .. and brought the character to its development conclusion.
Great issue.
9/10
Brilliant work once again from Dysart, Henry and Reber.

Re: Harbinger #23 Discussion - SPOILERS ARE ON (for now)
I really liked the 3rd person narration in the Harada scene describing how he got to Pittsburgh so quickly. I don’t think Dysart has done that too often (if at all) on Harbinger (3rd person narration).
Also ... lets not forget the other character that came to an end in this issue

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I'm still not sure flamingo is dead.
We've seen her regenerate from burns before.
We've seen her slow her velocity during a fall via thrust.
And, of course, the ominous, "Flamingo Lives"...
Plus Dysart has said one Renegade dies and one is severely injured after this...could Flamingo just be "severely injured"?

Oh snap! Could VEI have misdirected us this whole time and the actual "death" happens in issue 24? That would be jacked up. NOOOOOOO!!! The stress of the anticipation for 23 was enough. Don't do it, VEI. Don't do it!!!!BugsySig wrote:Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I'm still not sure flamingo is dead.

Holy crap that makes a lot of sense. If this is true that would be a huge misdirection.BugsySig wrote:Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I'm still not sure flamingo is dead.

Re: Harbinger #23 Discussion - SPOILERS ARE ON (for now)
Yeah, when it happened I almost thought for sure that it wasn't the real death, because we've seen her regen from burns before. The way it happened also seemed pretty anticlimatic, but does make it more like real life, where death doesn't come at some pivotal turning point and just happens.BugsySig wrote:Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I'm still not sure flamingo is dead.

Re: Harbinger #23 Discussion - SPOILERS ARE ON (for now)
Dysart is the best. Man, I feel very satisfied as a reader, yet- THIS SUCKS.
I can't say anything else that hasn't been told. It was sudden and brutal. In real life, most of the times death comes like that.
No last words, like someone said.
Btw, I *SQUEE* loved this issue. It was "Harbinger" at it's best, and that's saying something.

Re: Harbinger #23 Discussion - SPOILERS ARE ON (for now)
Anybody else think that Pete mind melded with the entire team (ala the scene with Kris)? And under that assumption, I think Flamingo's consciousness is inside Peter
So, then maybe with the release of the Gen Zero kids we might finally locate/revisit Hive who had the hots for Flamingo who just happens to be trapped in Peter's mind. Maybe Hive could help Peter by taking Flamingo into his consciousness with the others?
I like redacting my posts. It's fun.
So, I'm leaving the above, but it just occurred to me in typing the above:
The only logical explanation for the coda scene is that it occurred before the events leading to Flamingo's death.

The coda scene obviously happened before this issue. I would guess after the Perfect Day arc. I think there was a couple of months break between that arc and the current arclorddunlow wrote:

And I don't think her consciousness will live on ... I think dead is dead in this case. The Renegades will use her memory as a battle cry..
I think the speculation is over. I'd be very surprised there is any misdirection to this issue.BugsySig wrote:Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I'm still not sure flamingo is dead.

the coda fufilled the arc of the character.
She was completely toasted - Extra crispy. I think the gruesomeness of it should leave no doubt.
The Flamingo lives - is just Kris keeping her memory alive and using it as their battle cry
