Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
Just got back from the comic shop. Issues of Walking Dead #1127, Southern *SQUEE* #1, and Nailbiter #1 all being limited to 1 copy.
Has anyone read Nailbiter? Any good?
And does something key happen TWD 127? (Don't want to know what it is, just if there's an Invincible 111 sort of surprise.)

If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.

This is the first issue after All Out War, correct? I just recently started reading the series with the compendiums, so I have no clue what's going on with the current storyline.iggy101us wrote:Just read TWD 127 . . . yeah lots of key changes and new characters.kjjohanson wrote:Just got back from the comic shop. Yes, 1st issue after the All Out War arc. Now that the bi-weekly schedule has ended, have to wait another month for the next issue.kjjohanson wrote:This is the first issue after All Out War, correct? Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
Sure that's a premium over cover, but it's not like there's opportunity to make a filling (if people are looking to flip). I would be paying $4+ at the LC for this, so $6-8 bucks to sell it (which doesn't include any fees) doesn't appeal to big a good use of my time. If you're a store owner paying 1.75 (or whatever it is) then it's a bit better....StarBrand wrote:The seller charged 8.76 shipping on that book, so the sale you quoted at .99 was 9.75 for a single copy including shipping. Come on, GGSAE! A seller just sold 18 copies at 6.95 ea. to various buyers over a 48 hour period ending yesterday. That's before shipping. There's a copy auction style with 3 hours to go at 8.01. I could go on... I wouldn't call that cooling off.GGSAE wrote:Last sale 99 cents?StarBrand wrote:Nailbiter 1. 'Nuff said.![]()

Wait ...my name is Brian
Also Pax Romana has been gaining some interest- sales are all over the place - it is a Hickman book that I believe is going to be a show but I really don't know how it will translate - more likely a book to move while hot - I actually thought it was a good read too

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
Question for you guys: Of those of you who speculate and flip based on these market trends, do you guys guess pretty good and make a good amount of profit overall, or is it just something fun that might give you a little extra spending money in spurts which just gets put into more speculative purchases? (Especially curious for Elveen's answer.) It just seems like the work to payoff ratio would be too low to do this to actually make any money. I would think for every Manifest Destiny #1 that you made some dough on, you'd have a pile of Nowhere Men #1 that were a waste of money.
tl;dr - do you guys make money doing this or does it all even out (or do you lose a little with the ones that don't sell)?

I got a tip here once about some Guardians of the Galaxy book, and I bought a short stack of them for (I think) $3 each at a shop and then sold them all on eBay for $15-20 each.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
For me it is a business, and I don't like talking specific $$$, but I keep doing it, so you can imagine if it is sucessful lor not.
I DO focus on hard to find modern books, so I do more than my fair share of speculating. Most of the time I've been lucky, sometimes not. Honestly, I've only missed a few times and the times I've gone in big I've been fortunate: Peter Pan, Chew, ASM 700, Bat Adv 12, Harley books in general (I have the bggest Harley collection of any west coast dealer by far), TWD. My misses have not relly hurt me (the biggest "miss" is The Sixth Gun, I got most of them for around cover, so not that hurtful (I do have a bunch of them). I have sold some Sixth Gun books, but for a hot min back in the day I was considering going "all in" (spending all my $$$) buying Sixth gun books..... glad I did not.
As for the work to pay off ratio, I'd guess if I considered the total hours spent with the $$$ it might be a lowish hourly rate, but I can do a majortiy of the work at home, in the room with my family, so it's better than finding a second job somewhere.
I will also say, while speculating on the hot new book, there are tons of other older books that have and are rising in price and I do very well with those.
I am comfortable saying that "Elveen's Comics" is a full blown business, and one that is growing.
Did I answer the question Lord D?

Mostly. So, would you say that if you had less of an interest in the material you sold that you would still do it based on money alone?Elveen wrote:For me it is a business, and I don't like talking specific $$$, but I keep doing it, so you can imagine if it is sucessful lor not.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
One of my biggest hits was preordering 170 Captain America 25s at 40% off cover. I made over three grand profit in less than a week on those on eBay. Probably closer to four grand. I remember really being *SQUEE* at Wizard Magazine at the time. They ordered thousands of them, and retailed them on eBay, obviously trading on inside info. Then again, I've done that before myself.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
Back in the '90s I would buy multiple copies of books that I thought were going to be hot, but I realized sometime between now and then that it's mostly a waste of time and money (and especially living in NYC, space). But I do think it's interesting to follow what's hot. Now and then I'll pick up an extra copy or two of something if I know that there's already demand there and I can get it cheap, but for investments for the future, I'm mostly relying on my stock portfolio.lorddunlow wrote:Question for you guys: Of those of you who speculate and flip based on these market trends, do you guys guess pretty good and make a good amount of profit overall, or is it just something fun that might give you a little extra spending money in spurts which just gets put into more speculative purchases? But maybe I can change my story in the not so distant future. I'm going to be CGCing my copies of New Mutants 98 and first Doomsdays; if they're in as good a condition as I think, they may fetch a good price if I sell.
If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.

Re: Discuss Hard To Find Or Currently Hot Modern Comics
I really don't think it's possible to be profitable long-term speculating on a title before it's released, or during the release stage. There are so many titles that don't last that you would be sitting on a ton of crap. I think the key is finding books that are taking off, or already established and catching fire, then gradually selling into it.lorddunlow wrote:Question for you guys: Of those of you who speculate and flip based on these market trends, do you guys guess pretty good and make a good amount of profit overall, or is it just something fun that might give you a little extra spending money in spurts which just gets put into more speculative purchases?
