The regular was done by the normal series artist so it could be remembered with / identified with the series more closely than a different artist?

I tried to think of popular first issues with a variant cover and all I can think of is Saga, but Staples did both, so no comparison in that respect. However, although I wish I would've snagged one of those retailer Saga 1s back in the day, I really have no desire to pay a premium on it as the regular cover matches the other book covers in the series much better.

93 regular 9.8s slabbed, and 60 variant 9.8s, so that's not it.

I'd say that people that are looking at just having a collection that contains one of every issue are looking at the regular edition as the one necessary to have a complete collection, since it's be the series' artist, so demand for that is proportionate to the number of available copies. I figure if I was going that route with collecting a series, I'd see the variants as secondary when considering a complete collection.

Also, I should point out that, as far as I'm aware (just going on my own experience here), Jason Aaron is a lot more known writer compared to Chris Dingess, so I imagine the print run would be a bit higher than Manifest Destiny. It makes sense that the latter is going for some big bucks, since there are some relatively unknown creators making a really good book.

There's a thread on the CGC boards of SB, and 90% of the talk is around print run and value. I think it's been heavily speculated, so I don't see that as sustainable demand, although I enjoyed the book and the reviews were very, very favorable.

I don't think the print run is going to be that low, I'm sure a lot of people were aware of this book in advance.

Last sale 99 cents? :?

We should have a 'moderns cooling off thread', similar to what was on CGC. They don't have to necessarily be the hot-book-of-the-week club that's now selling for cover, then can be hot books which have peaked. Manifest Destiny looks to be in this club, I would hate to be that guy that paid $45 a piece for 30+ copies of this book...he'll be in a jam to break-even...

Little less, 38k. Anytime you see multiple 7 and 10 issue lots for sale on ebay you know the print run can't be that low.

The seller charged 8.76 shipping on that book, so the sale you quoted at .99 was 9.75 for a single copy including shipping. Come on, GGSAE! A seller just sold 18 copies at 6.95 ea. to various buyers over a 48 hour period ending yesterday. That's before shipping. There's a copy auction style with 3 hours to go at 8.01. I could go on... I wouldn't call that cooling off.
