Good episode but I am also not feeling Q&W.
I liked the new format of each guy talking about one or two different books.

lol, it's really different. One of the most hilarious things one can see here is a portuguese dude trying to speak spanish/castellan but using 70% of portuguese words. They are just speaking portuguese with a spanish accent, it's ridiculous.Chiclo wrote:Yeah. Portuguese is considered one of the "richest" and most difficult languages to learn.
Spanish is really easy. Not so many stupid/unnecessary rules as our language. Specially in writing.

Re: Only The Valiant Podcast
I think English takes the cake with non-sensical rules. I've always sort of known this, but in my 3yr-old son's search for knowledge of words and meanings along with letters and the sounds they make, it has become very obvious that it is amazing that anyone can learn English. He is constantly asking if one says or writes something a certain way (the way we have just recently taught him) only for him to be frustrated when I say, "well, that is how we taught you, but that's a special case..."ShadowTuga wrote:lol, it's really different. I took a medical Spanish class in med school, but the instructor kept laughing her *SQUEE* off at me inserting French words (I took 3 years of French in high school, and 4 semesters in college). The languages are too damn similar.

This discussion brings to mind one of my favorite quotes. Not sure what the source is, but here you go:
"English doesn't borrow from other languages. It mugs them in the alley and goes through their pockets for loose verbage."

I love English. Learning the whys and hows of all of our weird words and rules is basically a history of the English speaking countries. French is all up in our grill because of the Norman invasion and occupation. Lots of German influences on the language. Lots of Greek and Latin. Fun stuff.Phoenix8008 wrote:This discussion brings to mind one of my favorite quotes. Not sure what the source is, but here you go:

Re: Only The Valiant Podcast
I read an article a little while back where someone had compared Modern English to something of a study in linguistic archeology. They even arranged the different influences like strata -lorddunlow wrote:I love English. Words that came from colonisation in Asia, Africa and the Americas
Greek and Latin words that came mostly from the Enlightenment
A great deal of French influence not only on words but on simplification of the grammar
The very Germanic Old English
It went on to say that the languages spoken in England prior to the Anglo-Saxon-Jute migration in the 5th Century had very little influence on Modern English beyond place names. The Germanic language displaced the Celtic Brittonic rather than diffused with it like French did. There was a period of some Danish influence on English but Old Norse was so close to Old English that it was not much of a change. The pronouns they, them and their come from such Viking influence.

Elveen, I cannot fathom not knowing about Beachhead from GIJoe or Monty Python, but I'm with ya on Beastmaster - I loved that movie back in the day... But I had no idea there are 4 sequels?! I thought the later TV show sucked too.
