What comics are you reading now?

Pausing from my catching up on the last 3 weeks of books to chime in on East of West #6 - holy crap this book just keeps introducing badass after badass. The Ranger is such a cool character. A major showdown wild West style is definitely shaping up, and I cannot wait to see it!

This book needs to be a movie.


Revival #14 was also quite awesome.

Still haven't read EoW #6 yet... I need a kick in the a$$. Someone here mentioned really disliking Dragotta's art style - I have to say I can't imagine why. I think it is absolutely stunning & suits the mood & atmosphere of this book so well I couldn't imagine it drawn by anyone else. It has a bit of an unexaggerated anime feel to it, in the vein of the Akira movie.

Consider your a$$ kicked. Read it. It's really good. It just keeps getting better and better. I need more Rangers now! I agree with you about the art. I couldn't imagine any other art for this book.

It's currently on the top of my 'to read' pile now. Looking forward to it.

I agree, Revival #14 was good - some very interesting revelations about the white ghost things. I think anyone reading the series to date wouldn't be blown away by the reveals, I think we could see it coming, but I liked the idea of what happened when they mixed with water. Plenty of implications to explore out of that idea.

Yeah, they gave a little too much away in the previous 2 issues, but I have a feeling that there's going to be a lot more to the ghost things. There's really no way they can make this book a long term one, that I can see. I could see it wrapping up in about 50 issues tops. Probably less. Still, it's one of my favorite reads right now.

It kind of reads like the script for a tv show, doesn't it? I think it would be a cool one to watch. And yeah, there has to be some kind of ending in mind for this series, unless there is some other major twists coming along...

I caught up on Infinity/Avengers/etc. This thing is EPIC. If they reset like nothing happened, I'll be very annoyed, but right now, the crap has hitteth the fan. Awesome conclusion in Infinity #4 with Thor. I saw it coming a mile away, but it didn't diminish it one bit. This is a really fun crossover.

I just can't get into it. I have no doubt you are right about it being a great read, great concept, et al, but I'm just not enough of an Avengers fan to stay with it. Even the New U cameos with Starbrand & Nightmask aren't enough to pull me in. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that this will lead to a separate New U spin-off still. I would love to see that.

Judging by the end of Avengers #20 (may have been New Avengers - it's hard to keep the actual issues straight, as it has all essentially merged into a single book), Starbrand is about to start doing his thing. I look forward to it greatly - I was very upset that that cliffhanger wasn't continued in Infinity #4.

I think it is pretty cool that Hickman named a character in Infinity after Corvus.

New Avengers #11 & Avengers #21 were fantastic, as well. Infinity continues on with the great pace it has already set.

It was me who mentioned not liking Dragotta's art.......I ended up buying the EoW tpb. The only bit of Dragotta art I had looked at, previously, was his work on FF. Judging by his work on EoW, his art on FF wasn't his typical art style. He seemed to be emulating Kirby big-time.

Dragotta's art on East of West is phenomenal. What's surprising is, I wasn't engaged much by the writing in the EoW tpb, but loved the art. I bought issue #6, and it was the first issue/chapter of EoW I truly enjoyed as far as the writing goes.

Afterlife With Archie #1;
-Don't laugh, I haven't bought an Archie comic since I was about to become a teenager. I had no plans on getting this but after a flip through in the shop I couldn't resist. The art, while still cartoonish, is absolutely creepy & captures a really eerie mood for what otherwise should be a silly gimmick. It may not read well but seeing the final page where Jughead is turned into a zombie after being bitten by his infected pet Hot Dog was the clincher for me.

If you've never read it, I highly suggest Brubaker's book Criminal: The Last of the Innocent. It's essentially a deconstruction of the Archie books (I guess it could be considered Watchmen for Archie), and it's fantastic.......Really, you should get Criminal Hardcover volume 2, which collects Last of the Innocent with two other TPBs into one hardcover. All three sections are excellent, and you get more back-story on some characters, but Last of the Innocent is the best.

I just read The Umbral from Image. I think I was expecting a little more but I blame decompression. Overall it is an interesting dark fantasy. Great, moody art. Cool set up that definitely leaves wanting to read the next issue.
I think I'll have to read the first arc to know for sure if it is awesome or not.

One negative that really bothered me was the lettering. I don't like it. It looks like the letters were just typed on the page. Word bubbles are weird too.

I'm reading the Elric mini series from Frist comics.
I am enjoying it more than I did the first time.

Rocket Girl #1-2 A Great and fun read with beautiful artwork.

Rat Queens #1-2 A wickly funny and demented fantasy series about a pck of female mercs, the artwork is bit dodgy at times though.

Jupiter's Legacy #1-3 A dull and predictable tale of a Superman-like character's brother getting his son to murder his father so he, the children, and other heroes can take over. Millar is trying to do his answer to Watchmen but it fails because the son who murdered his father is an unlikable drunk and the daughter is a pregnat drug addict whose boyfriend is is the son of her late father's greatest nemesis, and their uncle is just a *SQUEE*. It's the cliched "superheroes are jerks" storyline, even the art by Frank Queity (of JLA: Earth 2 and All-Star Superman fame) is subpar IMHO.

Next up Sex #3-8, Saga #13-15, and East of West #1-7.

So, I re-read Umbral #1. It was much better on re-read (although they really need a better letterer). In this age of decompression, it's really hard to tell if a book will be any good from the first issue, but this issue set up everything very well, and the story has lots of potential. I love dark fantasy, so I have high hopes for this book. I really liked the art.

A couple of books that I read the first 4-5 issues of that people raved about a while back were Peter Panzerfaust and Nowhere Men. Neither book did much for me, and I stopped reading. Anybody reading these? Have they improved, worsening, whatever? Just curious. I really liked the first 2 issues of Nowhere Men, but I got bored with subsequent issues.

I wouldnt say it has gotten better, but if you read Peter panzerfaust in singles, I'd recommend reading it as a full arc.

I just re-read Star Wars Dark Empire.

I didn't like it as much as I had the last time. I felt like Luke's reasoning for searching out the dark mind that was 'out there' somewhere was a bit convoluted and out of character.

I read mostly Valiant, but other than that I've been reading Aquaman on a monthly basis. Also I picked up the first two issues of "The Star Wars" which is the original script of Star Wars adapted into a comic. So far it's just ok.

Also I'll be starting up the Rai TPB i found at my comic shop a few weeks ago

I really enjoyed Pretty Deadly #1 & will continue to pick it up. Loved the art (has a bit of a Paul Pope vibe), and the slightly weird-west setting (not in the vein of East of West). Solid set up of the story & intriguing characters.

Last night I read Thor God of Thunder #1-11 that my friend Chris loaned me.

I've never been a huge Thor fan but HOLY *SQUEE* this book is AWESOME. Jason Aaron's story is tremendous and the Esad Ribic art is fantastic. I'll be buying this one in HC for sure

That's good to hear. I read the first few issues which were awesome, but dropped off because it's a $4 book.

IMO, Thor was always lame, but between the first movie and the JMS run (which was also excellent), I've really gotten into the character. I'll have to revisit god of thunder at some point. Jason Aaron is an awesome writer.
