I am pretty fluent in spanish. I have been detained at the border twice - one of those times they had to question me to determine my nationality. They thought I was a Mexican mennonite. This was over 10 years ago when beards were considerably less common than they are today (I have worn a beard since my freshman year of college). Mexican mennonites have beards, dress plainly and speak spanish with a European accent. I used to have a Madrid accent in spanish because my teacher had lived in Madrid and it took me years to gradually get rid of it.

I have always had a pretty easy time with foreign language. I have studied spanish, french, german, russian, middle greek and japanese and can more or less get around in any of those languages except japanese. Spanish is the one I get to practice the most. I live a solid 8 or 9 hours north of the border with Mexico but there are lots and lots of people in this town that either cannot speak English comfortably or are more comfortable speaking spanish. I work with the public and have conversations in spanish almost daily. I started learning spanish in high school but I still learn things about the dialects spoken locally.
Wow, the Chiclo legend continues, that is very interesting and unexpected! Muy bueno!! I think you should say a few words on the next podcast!
I keep looking for an opening to sing le Chant de Partisans or Un Rinconcito en el Cielo.

Couldn't you have proved you weren't a Mennonite quickly by like showing them you have zippers and stuff?
You are thinking of the Amish. Mennonites believe in zippers, beer and cigarettes. Mennonites don't believe in deodorant or the removal of body hair. When I was in high school, a female athlete made an observation about playing basketball against a couple of local schools with significant mennonite populations.
well there go even easier to prove. just show the dude your Right Guard and you're all good.

When I was in high school, my spanish teacher found some state-wide Spanish competition in San Antonio. She entered me in the geography test. The test was in spanish and had no distinction between native and non-native categories (some of the competitions did). My junior year, I had the highest score by 8 points. My senior year, the test focused more on culture than geography and history and so I placed third.

I know, right? So much good stuff.

I realized I have one correction. The Faraway Arc in A&A didn't start till issue 10, not 9, as I stated in this episode. This means that A&A 0 did come out before the Faraway arc started, as Jonesy was recalling. I just had the issue where that arc started wrong.

Have you ever heard the saying, "keep it a hundred"? It means to keep it "real" 100% of the time.

Well keep it 90 means, keep it real 90% of the time. It is a joke/silly line that I came up with some time ago (not sure if I "came up with it" but I've been saying it for quite a while and I don't remember hearing it from someone. I remember one of my homies saying, "I gotta keep it a hundred" and I said, "well, I keep it 90!"). To me it pretty much means 90% serious and right and correct, but leave 10% for shenanigans. I think I said it on the podcasts a while ago, but it is something that I always say when working cons with Doc. It's a pretty stupid saying really, but it seems to bubble up to my vernacular somewhat often.

For me, If i had to define it I would say:

Keep it 90 = leave a bit of your life for fun and silliness.
