lorddunlow wrote:This is the value I can see with CGC - eBay. I really would like to have a really nice copy of Manhattan Projects #1. Four ebay transactions later for "NM" copies from sellers with great feedback, and I have a book that I settled on which is probably 9.0 at best. The first one was literally VF/F in my opinion and I'm very lenient in my grading. I just want a copy with no obvious imperfections. I don't care if there is some minor spine problem or similar, but I'm not going to pay a lot of money for a book with creases and wrinkles/waves. I've seriously thought about putting down some money on a CGC, just to have a good copy. Problem is, there are no 9.6 copies since that would be worth the hassle to the people who submit. 9.8s go for way more than I'm willing to pay.
I don't know what portion of comic collectors live somewhere they can find the books they want in person, but I certainly don't.
Ebay is basically my only option for the past 16 years of comic buying.
Switching to CGC for "guaranteed grades" hasn't been cheap but I know what I have when I have a slab.
It's much preferable for me than having a bunch of overgraded books that I still have to keep upright and packed well in cardboard boxes or else I'm the one doing the additional damage.

I still like a good deal on raw books, though... but I always assume the grade is low.

Here's one where I bought the Rai trade paperback for $5.24 shipped and got Magnus #5 and Rai #0 for free.

Even if the Magnus #5 doesn't have the coupon, you can't beat free. :D

lorddunlow wrote:Do you have a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 that you could flip through if you wanted?
Sure... reprints are cheap and easy to find. I have several.
lorddunlow wrote:I don't ever plan on selling my books and not being able to rifle through them whenever I want, puts me off. This is just my personal opinion.
You would have no use for CGC whatsoever. It's a tool to take the "used car salesman" tactics out of comic buying.
lorddunlow wrote:On a related note, I find it funny that a lot the CGC'ers on here talk about 9.8 varying from copy to copy, since it's a subjective thing in the first place. dhudson1 also commented on not displaying his CGC books due to light-bleaching damaging the comics. This means the whole point of CGC - too standardize and lock in a grade/value - is really misplaced. I literally could have a bleached white book that said Amazing Fantasy #15 8.0 that would really not be an 8.0.
True, but you would know the book isn't 8.0 anymore... and all potential buyers would know the book isn't 8.0 anymore. CGC's grade would have been accurate at the time, but they make no claim toward what happens when it leaves their office. You could literally take a bath with it the same day it arrived. :kidaround:
lorddunlow wrote:Sorry for the tangent. I am fascinated by the CGC since it didn't exist my first go around with comics. I also still state that being a grader for the CGC would be an ultimately awesome job for retirement.
It's definitely "on topic" with regard to Valiant prices... I bought about 15 copies of X-O Manowar #1 in the late-1990s and early 2000s on Ebay.
ALL of them were described as "near mint" or "mint". The average grade is around 9.2... which is less than "near mint"... and some are 8.0.

Not a big deal on a $5 to $10 book... but even a $25 or $40 book can be a major turnoff when you don't get what the seller claims... much less spending $100+ on "just trust me" raw books.

Check out this auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111111213637" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
CGC 5.0 and the title includes the phrase "What is wrong with CGC?"

How much do you want to bet that this seller would have described the book as 8.0 or higher if they sold it raw?
He's got 5,000+ feedback and a 99.5% rating, and he would have been very wrong about this book... and some buyer would have been the victim.

Thankfully, that won't happen, because CGC says it's a 5.0, because I agree with the 5.0 grade, and because I'm the buyer.
Darn you and your distracting website! I was too busy pming people that I forgot to bid. You're welcome for the decent deal.

It was almost crazy how hot V1 Valiant comics got leading up to the relaunch. Seemingly not long after the relaunch took place, demand for V1 back issues declined though, and a lot of the price gains seen leading up to the relaunch were given back. Now, there seems to be a new wave of demand for V1 back issues, and I've been noticing some slabbed VEI books are gaining in demand too.
I really believe as VEI continues to publish, Valiant just keeps growing in importance as a comic book publisher, and consequently demand for Valiant back issues grows, particularly V1 keys. As far as I can tell, not only is Valiant the third most important current universe, but it's also one of the top few comic book universes in history in terms of importance.
I remember I said something along the lines of "nothing Valiant back issue prices do will surprise me" in a post when I was new to this board, and I'm really feeling that again. I watched Marvel keys go through the roof in price, and I really believe Valiant keys will do the same thing. Valiant is a special universe.

I think it's still up in the air for me. Too many fans unloading die to hard times seems to be keeping the prices down. I think VEI still has a good year or two to go with success before there will be long term growth in vh1 slabs.

My hope is that there will be enough new interest to prompt new vh1 submissions, something we have only seen with keys and people trying to gey rich quick on turoks and the like without understanding the vh1 market.

My biggest frustration at comic con was dealers not having valiant or trying to Charge double nm prices for vh1 in fine or original art. It felt like the 90's before the crash all over again.

I think the reason they do that.... Is because its hard for them to find and get v1 books by the boatload and they know their hot and try to ask way to much. They know if they sell them, they will have a hard time trying to replace them.

Just my opinion... But I have the same problem EVERYWHERE I go. :?

Not everyone is pricing them crazy. I picked up Rai 0, Solar 1 and Solar 2 from my FLCS, all NM, for $13.75 total. I thought that was decent.

I think all dealers overcharge at shows...I only attend the odd small show, but I never buy 'known' books because they're always at the high-end of pricing. And I think Valiant has always been like that, and with the relaunch, dealers use that to justify it. Turok #1 for $5.

Thanks Jay.

Congrats to the winner of the Harbinger 8 Lemire.

I pre ordered six copies and only came up with two 9.8s.

The time has passed and I would never in my lifetime ever get that book in that condition again.

That's how rare some of these books are. Its such a tedious and frustrating process.

Tracking another seller on eBay selling a VH1 Archer & Armstrong #0 Gold CGC 9.8 with a BIN of $400.

I believe that I purchased mine for about $300 (can't remeber, might have been $350) this past Summer, so it will be interesting to see if this one sells. (Note: I'm still looking for a yellow-lable copy of this issue...)

Well, since the first one has a BIN with an "or Best Offer", and this one doesn't, really doesn't seem like much competition after all, does it :hm: ?

Unless, of course, the first seller (really am wondering who the hell that must be :!: ) won't budge below $399.96  ...

Part of me wants to buy every copy that is put up for bid and/or purchase. I mean, there are only 28 9.8's floating about, and it would be kind of cool to monopolize the market. :p
