Phoenix8008's Trade Paperback Valiant Free View!
Welcome to the thread documenting Phoenix8008's Valiant Free View! I had a great time doing it and I'm eagerly awaiting results from my LCS to see if/how many new Valiant subscribers sign on after my efforts. Here's how it all got started...
I had seen some of the old threads showing Valiant Free Views from others in the past. I wasn't lucky enough to have the money to buy any of the Dollar Debut issues that so many did their Free View's with, but I really wanted to try and expand the Valiant readership in my area despite it being a smallish town with only one comic shop. I've lent my personal comics to others at work and brought 1 or 2 new fans into the fold. When I started getting my Valiant comcis from this LCS back in August, I was the only one with Valiant on their pull list. Now I'm the first of three! I looked into ordering alot of the dollar debut issues, but couldn't find any mass quantities for sale. Not an affordable option to pay shipping for 1 or 2 copies at a time for something I'm giving away, so I finally decided to go another route... Trade Paperbacks!
Yes, I'd get less copies for the same money, but more story bang for the buck and (hopefully) a greater chance at hooking prospective new Valiant fans and paying customers for the LCS. Plus, with how cheap VEI sells their first TPB's for, I could do fairly well still. So I ordered 2 TPB's each of X-O Manowar, Harbinger, Bloodshot, and Archer & Armstrong. 8 books totaling 34 issues worth of story wasn't too horrible I thought.
While I was waiting for my shipment of Trades to arrive, I kept busy by getting ready my pamphlet to go along with the giveaway explaining what I was doing along with why i was doing it and what I hoped to accomplish. I borrowed from Carson's flyer (shown in his thread from October 2012 here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38461&hilit=free+view) and tweaked it to make it my own.
Here's a pic of my pamphlet -
I double checked that a trade paperback could fit inside the bags/boards I had and it worked. So I decided I'd tape the pamphlet to the back side of the backing board so that it would show through the bag when they went to open it.
Finally, my shipment arrived and I knew the box I was holding contained my Free View goodies!
So I got to work putting it all together. I couldn't help but flip through (gently) the beautiful trades to gaze on them in wonder... and it's a good thing I did. I found that both my copies of the Bloodshot trade had the printing error on the last page where the text was all fuzzy and derezzed! Oh no! I'm giving someone something to try and hook them into the comic and the last page their going to get of the story has fuzzy text that won't help propel them into the next arc of the story! Okay, okay, I can fix this. I'll do a translation!
So I pulled out my original issue of Bloodshot #4 to figure out what was being said. Using a sheet of blank printer paper, I hand wrote all the text on the page including word balloons matching what showed on the page so the reader would be able to get the end of the story. Did it twice, once for each book. Then I compared it to the last page in the trade and lo and behold... the text bubbles weren't in the right place! Now I remembered WHY the text got messed up in the first place. Because they were making a correction to the originally printed comic where the text for Kara and Melissa got switched around! So... I did it again. Two more copies with the text bubbles in the right place and pointing toward the right characters!
After that, I was ready to go!
Finally, I was off the the comic store to drop off my bounty and get this Free View started! At Mos Eisley Toys & Collectibles, in Sebring, FL I met again with Will, the owner, and handed over the goods.
I also provided him a sign out sheet of sorts to keep track of who he's given the trades to as well as a brief description of the concept of each book in case he needed to try explaining it to someone.
He loved them and will start distributing them into pull boxes with new comics the first week of December. I hope to hear by January that I'm now the first of 5, or 6, or 10 people now getting some Valiant pulls each month at the LCS! Wish me luck!!

Re: Phoenix8008's Trade Paperback Valiant Free View!
It's not supposed to be, no. My son actually pointed that out to me awhile back and I was amazed I never thought about it before. I always just liked Phoenix's in mythology and stuff and once I started making internet usernames it was natural to try and use that, but of course somebody else already had it, so you have to add some numbers, right? My numbers actually have meaning (beyond BOOB at least). If you turn the 8's sideways you get an infinity symbol. The cycle of the Phoenix takes it from infinity to nothing (zero) and then from nothing to infinity again as it burns to ashes and then is reborn from the ashes eternally. That, and I happen to like BOOB's as well.lorddunlow wrote:

Re: Phoenix8008's Trade Paperback Valiant Free View!
Update time.
The good: All my trades got handed out to people and are hopefully creating some new Valiant fans.
The bad: My LCS owner has been struggling lately and between family medical issues and other troubles has come to the decision that he can't devote the time needed to run his store as it deserves to be done, so he's closing the store as of December 31st so he doesn't have to sign a new lease. So my Freeview isn't going to have the desired effect of bringing in business for him and there's no way for me to measure the success of my efforts now as there is no other comic store within an hour and a half drive. So I'm back to ordering comics online and waiting till the end of the month to get them.
The great: I got my gold for this effort, and while Quantum & Woody isn't my favorite series, this is my first Gold book and I earned it, so I'll treasure it for those reasons regardless.

Re: Phoenix8008's Trade Paperback Valiant Free View!
That's a bummer man. I too wait a month for my books to be shipped but at least I have the peace of mind that its coming from Ed (Paradise) so it will always be done right. I rely on the digital books until my printed ones arrive.
