Loved that you put the song you were talking about at the end of the Bloodshot 0 episode. Nice button on the episode.

I am not sure if I would want to set the world record for podcasting. I would get pretty loopy after 12 or 18 hours.

I say that OTV should work it's way up to the going for the world record of podcasting.

We should schedule a 3 hr pod and then work our way up

I did a four hour podcast once. And we started at midnight. We were all pretty sleepy by the end of it.

Really enjoyed the podcast. Congrats crew, another great one!

Just my 2 cents regarding the Metal debate and the Zep/Sab thing:

LZ is LOUD, heavy, blues-birthed Rock N' Roll. They gave "Heavy Metal" its first high-screaming frontman and guitar hero. Also, all-over-the-floor drumming. But they really have nothing in common with subsequent subgenres of METAL!, unless you count Hard Rock as a subgenre of Metal. Guns n' Roses might have been the last great money-making band influenced by Zeppelin, for an example. Before them Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy, Van Halen, Kiss, all of the 70's Rock is influenced by the first Zep records.

Sabbath were the first electric band to use the tritone, which makes them the most influential Heavy Metal (as we perceive it today) band since it was the first time such a sound was heard. Riff-wise, Tony Iommi invented the Heavy Metal guitar, as we know it.

Geezer made bass players look truly IMPORTANT beyond simple virtuosity, you can't have a Sabbath (and Metal) record without an in-your-face bass line that makes your bowels turn.
Ozzy is not the greatest singer in the world, but he was punk before punk, in the sense that he found his style and went with it. His voice and wailing lines made the band unique. Along with Ward's unique style of drumming (see "Iron Man" for a prime example of out-of-the-box drumming by Ward or "Children of the Grave" for the birth of groove metal/rock), they created this scary, intense, almost-demonic tunes that laid the foundations for Heavy Metal.
The next generation of truly relevant bands among the genre (NWOBHM) are riffing on stuff that Sabbath kinda already did, 10 years before.

Also, yeah, Claremont's classic late 70's/early-to mid-80s' is mindblowing amazing. Proteus arc is as good or better than Dark Phoenix Saga. So underrated, imo.

Jonesy - Glad to see some love for Prophet. I've been loving the series. I wouldn't say I've been disappointed but I think I get what you mean. Sometimes you'd like there to be a little more clarity. But it really is nice to have something so different on the shelves. You should check out Michel Fiffe's self-published Copra. It's more straight forward but I think it would appeal to fans of Prophet.

In the metal debate, where does Leslie West and Mountain fit in. I'm not a big metal guy but I've often heard them mentioned as one of the precursors to metal.

Sorry, I'll be listening to both Zeppelin and Black Sabbath very loudly for a while instead of posting. I definitely don't consider Led Zeppelin heavy metal. Great music, just not metal.

You all make great points in regards to the metal debate, in which I wholeheartedly agree with...100% :)

I am certainly not the expert on metal, however the majority of my musical listening years and performing ability lives in that world. Because it all started for me with Metallica, this is why I consider Black Sabbath to be such an important originator of heavy metal. But Zep, Hendrix, Cream, and tons of groups that I know i've never heard of certainly have been influences to what heavy metal became, and has branched off into so many differing styles over the decades.

It was a fun side-conversation to the episode and i'm glad that y'all enjoyed it too :)

Thanks Dirt!!! Yes, it's unlike anything on the shelves; it reminds me at times of my experience reading the defunct and short-lived "Automatic Kafka" book from Wildstorm many, many years ago...in that at that particular time, I hadn't experienced artwork and story like that. You can't have expectations with "Prophet" and i've found that going into each issue blindly makes for a better read :)

I'll check out Copra sometime; thank you for the recommendation!

Loved the musical outtro of the past 3 episodes. Fun, different, creative :-)
As for the metal debate, allow me to chime in. Zeppelin and Sabbath both debuted in the same year, so they were working independently of one another, in different cities in England.
I would consider BOTH bands pre-cursors to what metal is. I don't think when Sabbath came out, they were described as heavy metal, that's a genre that was named after them, and then they were regarded as basically the father's of it all. However, most bands of the time that were influenced by Sabbath were also influenced by Zeppelin. I don't think there was too much "choosing" of only one band or the other. If you liked heavy, hard music, you liked both. I can guarnatee that any band that went on to be influenced by Sabbath, were also influenced by Zeppelin, even if they weren't technically "heavy metal". Although, they were one of the heaviest bands of that era.
And since I still can't figure out how to post an image on this site, here's a link to the family tree of metal. Different branches, so take it however you'd like :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I really like Uriah Heep - at one point they were probably my favourite band - and I never thought of them as heavy metal.

My favourite metal bands like Nightwish and Leaves' Eyes aren't even on that chart.

Jonesy - Automatic Kafka was a great series and I was said to see it end.

Bone - that is a great chart. Interesting that The Saints or AC/DC aren't on there as they definitely fit in on this chart. Is this anti-Aussie?

If you guys do end up doing a super long episode, do a "Unity Revisited, Super Mega Ultimate Extravaganza Edition". Make it like 3-4 hours long. Oh pretty please!
