Comixology Pull list featured Comic - lots of Valiant

Post by lorddunlow »

I can never keep track of which comics are coming out each Wednesday, so I use Comixology's pull list feature (not the digital comics part of the site) that send me an email reminder every Tuesday night. For the past 2 months Valiant has been the Featured Comic of the Week almost every week there is a VEI book out. Is this a paid advertisement or is it just curated in some way by Comixology. The non-VEI books are usually Big 2 or Walking Dead or similar. If it's the latter, then it's very exciting.

I don't think anyone knows how this works. I asked the same question regarding the positioning of books on the mobile site. In that case, I think it has to do with popularity/sales just based on what I have observed. Often books like XO and Shadowman are toward the front, while others can be a few pages back. But since Comixology doesn't release sales numbers, we may never know.

I have the feeling it is due to how hard it is to find Valiant books in print. I live in a decently sized metropolitan area, not Pittsburgh or Philly or anything, but it's the tenth largest MSA in the state. And it doesn't have a real LCS. It has a Barnes & Noble, and they only carry DC and Marvel pretty much, and only the biggest ten of each or what have you.

There is an LCS about 45 minutes away, they do not normally carry Valiant but do have the whole pullbox thing going.

The only other LCS in the entire area is about an hour and a half away.

So basically to buy Valiant in print I would have to drive quite a ways away.

If it's like this in other parts of the country, then the only way a lot of people are reading Valiant month-to-month, is digitally. That's the way I read it. I order the TPBs through Amazon, though.

So Valiant titles may be one of the bigger digital sellers for them, so they advertise the titles prominently.

That's the thing, though. Usually it only features the big Marvel or DC release of the week, or a milestone Image book (Invincible 100 for example). Valiant has occupied that spot probably 75% of the past 8 weeks (prior to the past 2 weeks without Valiant). This week Archer and Armstrong #10 is the featured book.

I'm inclined to think it is advertised space and VEI is paying to get recognition.

If it's not, I think it means VEI is taking off in a very good way.

Either way, it's great for VEI!

I'm wondering if there is some software in place that tracks what you are buying & then presents you with options related to your own buying habits... :?

The featured comic is listed even if you are not signed in.

Warren and Dino have both said they are using digital purely as a marketing/advertising strategy and are not particularly concerned with digital sales as a revenue stream. I am inclined to think it is paid for as well, but you never know. I think they have done pretty well digitally. If you look at the "popular" lists on the day of or day after release, books like XO and Shadowman are on their pretty often.

Same here, no LCS's near me. So I get digital and trades for all of my comics.

Just to clarify, as many people keep mentioning digital sales, I'm talking about a featured promo that is on the Comixolology Pull List (paper comics - not digital) service on their website. It's a separate website from the digital store. They send reminder emails of what comics you subscribe to at your LCS are out that week if you want them to.

Actually not a Valiant book featured this week. The featured is East of West #4. Which is odd, considering the launch of a new Valiant book and a new arc of the (arguably) biggest title.

Yeah, I noticed. I really figured Quantum and Woody would be the feature this week. It would have been great from a marketing standpoint which leads me to believe that this isn't a paid spot.

Archer and Armstrong #12 is this week's featured comic on Comixology. So, once again VEI is getting exposure. I would love to know if this is paid advertising or not.

There are quite a few Comixology ads in the printed Valiant books. I wonder if there is perhaps a trade-off there...

So, Dino informed me that the featured comic of the week on the print side of Comixology is not paid advertising. So, this is just Comixology's picks for the week.

This is pretty awesome, especially this week, as Infinity #1 came out today, but was not the featured pick. (They usually spotlight any big #1s, especially events)
