Good article and theory. Like short-selling in the stock market when sellers sell something they don't have and hoping to buy it back at a cheaper price to make a profit.

I have seen some crazy prices on Amazon. Not quite that crazy but I wonder if it is something similar.

This guy had these items listed with a starting bid of $20. I placed a bid, he then cancelled the auction (claiming the items were no longer available) and then relished with a new starting bid of $90. Clearly he did his research AFTER starting the auction, and then decided he could ask more.

Here is a similar auction buy the same guy after the one you posted did not sell:

He lowered the price back down, but the X-O#0 and #2 are no longer there. for this one he lists the estimated print runs, and I think that it is kind of funny that now he is using the signed FCBD book as incentive to bid and is going to throw it in for the winning bidder for free. Maybe he realized that he didn't have as big of a pot of gold as he though he did.

Now that the price is reasonable, that could be a nice pick-up depending on the condition of the books.

It mentions that he got the print runs from this website so I wonder if they are a memeber here?
