Recently finished a Vertigo TPB titled Skreemer by Peter Milligan that I thought was an excellent well-written suspenseful crime noir character-driven story. I enjoyed it because I actually had to read it. I had to pay attention to all the details and every page made me want to know more about the characters and the connections between them.

Here's the description:

The cult pre-VERTIGO classic miniseries featuring work by Peter Milligan and Steve Dillon is finally collected. In a land descended into anarchy and warlord rule, where gangster 'presidents' vie for territory and control of resources - a boy named Veto rises to become the greatest 'skreemer' assassin the presidents have ever seen…and the greatest threat to their stranglehold on power they have ever known. This is the story of what happens when Veto decides to fight against destiny, to fight against the future he can see all too clearly.

interesting that was done by marvel, I had thought that the majority of the Moorcock stuff was put out by First/Capital comics...
I think that First Comics did put out the majority of the Moorcock stuff, but they started in 1983-1984.

Marvel put this out in 1982/1983.

Finished Witchfinder (from the Hellboy verse) starring Sir William Grey. The first TPB of his was good, but this one wasn't. Didn't care for the artwork or the story. Even if you're a Hellboy and BPRD fan (like me), don't bother buying this book. It was a disappointment. :(

Any thoughts on this one? I picked it up as well, and feel that they gave away too much. Now it seems like a straightforward story.

The story in TWD is picking up lots of steam in 98, but the art was not good.

Swamp Thing #8. This issue was absolutely fantastic. 5/5 for both story and art. These pages by Paquette are something to marvel over. The interesting thing is that this is the very first time we actually see the Swamp Thing in the series and the book has still been amazing.

That kind of got me thinking about this new book compared to X-O.

Whereas on X-O, after one issue I'm eager for the story to get to the main concept (Aric in the armor), in Swamp Thing, I've very much been enjoying the ride along the way through 8 issues. Why? The nature of the story. Visigoths fighting Romans isn't all that exciting compared to everything that is laid out in Swamp Thing. The art - X-O is very nice, but the style is pedestrian compared to these DC dark books. The pages by Paquette are masterpieces to behold while X-O pages are nice to read.

Daredevil #12 - This was an excellent issue. It can be read by itself without needing any other knowledge. It's a date issue (which I love) and it tells the origin story of Foggy. This was great.

Whispers #2 - This book seems to be getting overlooked, but the first two issues have been really, really good.

Trueblood #1 - I checked this out because it's written by Ann Nocenti. This was just a set up issue mainly, but it was much better than the first series.

Uncanny X-Force-Otherworld HC--Just two issues in but it's fantastic. Of course, I'm a little biased because I'm a big Captain Britain fan. This title has been a great read though so I was expecting it to continue and it has.

Dancer #1 by Nathan Edmonson and Nic Klein. 4/5

This looks to be a spy / love thriller. The story itself so far is fine, but the pages by Nic Klein are beautiful.

Daytripper tpb from Vertigo by Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba. 9/10

This was really, really good. It's about life and death and is one of those "quiet moments" books. Each issue tells a piece of an obituary writer's life and he dies at the end of each issue. It's a 10 issue book. By the 6th issue or so, it starts to repeat itself a bit, but by the 8th issue, it starts wrapping things up.

I was a bit ambivalent about his one. It was good enough, but it didn't blow me away. Not sure if I will keep up with it.

I just read Higher Earth #1, and rather liked it. I think I will keep up with that one.

The art is nice, but there's not much in the way of character development. I'll probably stick with it though.

I'm thinking about checking out Swamp Thing because of all the positive stuff I've heard. Does anyone read Justice League Dark? It seems interesting.

Swamp Thing is fantastic.

I only tried the first issue of JL Dark. It was okay. Jeff Lemire is taking it over so it will probably be pretty good.

Seconded on Swamp Thing, and I picked up Lemire's 1st issue of JLD (#9) because I liked ST so much. I enjoyed it as well.

I just read the digital issues 1-9 of Justice League Dark and am starting issue 5 of Swamp Thing. I'm really liking them both. They've both been added to my pull list :thumb: Now I have to try to find all the back issues for each since I need to own the floppies :(

Swamp Thing gets better and better. If you aren't reading Animal Man, you are missing out.

Batman Annual #1 - I loved the first part of this, but did not enjoy the second part where the rug was pulled out from under the story.

I have enjoyed JLD so far. I get the feeling that certain team members will sit out certain story arcs - looks like Madam Xanadu is sitting out the current adventure.

Heh. Animal Man and Swamp Thing is really all you need from the New 52.

I'm still getting Flash and Aquaman, but they aren't "must reads."
