After years of both my wife and my best friend reading it ... I decided I'd go ahead and start it, so we could all talk about it - instead of them having to talk about it away from me, lest I hear spoilers.

Usually, I only like to read a series once it's ended - or, at least, I like to read a whole set of one writer's take on the book. So, this is really going against my normal reading habits but, it's finally time I dug into...

I must admit, I've already seen both seasons of the Walking Dead TV show so, I'm not unfamiliar with the basics of the characters.

As of Friday and Saturday, I've read through all of Walking Dead HC 1 & 2. Here are some of my thoughts:

1. Carl is much cooler in the book than the tv series.
2. I'm assuming Tyreese (comic) is T-Dawg (tv). If so, I was surprised to see how much of a main character he is (since he rarely gets any spotlight on the show).
3. I like the tv version of Hershel much better than the comic.
4. I didn't even notice when there was an artist change mid-book one.
5. I can see how this concept could really go on forever: (a) we have the group of survivors (b) some group members die (c) they find more people to join the group (d) repeat steps b & c
6. It seems like the tv series is Kirkman's way of expanding on concepts that he regrets not focusing on in the comic. For instance, the tension between alpha males, Rick & Shane, was much more heightened in the show. The same with the barn incident. These are both plot points that I think the tv series handled in a much more thorough way.

Overall, I'm really enjoying it. The wife says the concept is starting to wear thin on her (she's read through HC 7) but, since I'm only just about to start HC 3, the premise is still new, interesting and engaging.

Carl and Hershel are definitely better in the book. It has been confirmed by Kirkman that Tyrese is not T-Dog. I'm expecting Tyrese to show up early in season 3. Some of the stuff with him in the book is really, really good.

Regarding #6 - That's the advantage of a writers room. You get a bunch of heads together thinking things out so you come up with stuff that just one person wouldn't think of. That's why both the TV show and the comic are great in their own way.

Regarding burnout - Many, including myself have been complaining about the same thing. Kirkman has always redeemed himself though so I have faith we are about to see some interesting things soon.

:hi: Fo'

Overall 1 and 2 not bad but perhaps really over-hyped due primarily to it selling out before it hit the shelves. The story is not bad but suffers IMHO of being to short whereby issues 1 and 2 each should have been longer by about 4-6 or so pages in order to flush out/develop the scenes and characters better. Most build slowly but abruptly ends/segue into the next...incomplete. The inking is to thick/dark in most places which distracts from the art work overall (take a look at the cover of #2 as an example and try to see the flying monkey from the background...the details are completely lost).

I would have picked this up anyways but the fact it has flown off the shelves and has gone immediately to a second print (#1 anyways and suspect 2 shortly) makes me wonder what all the fuss is about. Perhaps its that children stories/folktales/fairy tales/fables themes are all on the rise. Although I am harsh on independents, I will keep this on my sub as this has potential for an enjoyable series over the long term.

The tagline is "All the power None of the responsibility". I wanted NOT to like this, but I think I have another book that I'll at least give a few issues to try it out. This read like a movie and the premise was exactly like the tagline. The tone of the book is along the lines of what I hoped Venom would be, but was not. It focuses on the character moreso than punching / kicking some baddie.

Scarlet Spider #2 - Still digging this. The art in this issue by Ryan Stegman reminded me of a mix between a mordern spidey and Rob Guillory's stuff in Chew. The story is a bit heavier than what Slott is doing in ASM, but equally enjoyable on a different level.

Spidey stuff is really good right now.

Green Wake #10 - I have no idea what happened in this, but it looked great.

Scalped #56 - I didn't see this coming for the ending, but I'm intrigued.

Amazing Spider-Man #680 - Torch and Spidey. Some pretty funny stuff in here. There was even a TWD mention in reference to catching up on past TV episodes - "They are still on Hershel's farm." LOL

Took a quick break from TWD to read through some Marvel mini-series:

Thor: First Thunder - retellings of early the first few Thor stories from Journey Into Mystery. Very unnecessary mini-series - doesn't add much insight into these early tales and even gets some of the circumstances wrong. Skip this one. yick

Avengers: Prime - sends Cap, Iron Man & Thor on a quest to set the Nine Worlds (of Norse mythology) right again. More importantly, it gets these three guys friendly again after the rift from Civil War (and other events up through Siege). Kind of fun but, mostly feels like a Thor series with Cap & IM thrown in for good measure.

Taskmaster vol. II - this was VERY cool in a super-secret spy type story. Also, it reveals the secret, never-before-revealed origin of the Taskmaster. Lots of fun. Quirky. And important to the character's mythos. Check it out!

X-Men/Spider-Man (2009) - a fun mini-series that furthers my appreciation of Gage-written work. It follows X-Men/Spidey team-ups through the years, all the while, Mr. Sinister is continuing a grand scheme in the background until its fruition in issue #4. (#1) takes place just after the events of X-Men #66. (#2) occurs around the time of the Mutant Massacre. (#3) features the Ben Reilly Spider-Man, just after Peter quit the costume. Lots of fun for fans of Spider-Man or X-Men continuity.

The New Deadwardians # 1: Very cool concept. Read quickly, but that's not a complaint. The art is stylish. Script by Dan Abbnett.

Green Lantern-The New Guardians # 7: The "supposed" origin of Invictus. A transitory issue. This series is certainly working in the grey areas, and that's a good thing.

Aquaman # 7: An appearance by an old foe, a monster storm and the return of Dr. Shin...but, who are "The Others?" The dawn of a new arc begins. Another fun issue, if a little slight, this time out.

The Flash # 7: This could be the start of something tremendous or that of something terrible. Not sure which. As a fan of post-COIE Flash, I'm really hoping some of the events are reversable.

Saga # 1: Well, that was different. I think this one is going to take a few issues to get going, but I'm in for at least the next 2. I want to see how it develops and which approach Vaughn decides to take. The art is a little odd, at first, but I think it fits.

The new Brian K Vaughan book that came out today. It's his first truly creator owned book which is being released by Image and his first work since Ex Machina ended. It's an ongoing. 44 story pages, no ads for $2.99

It's a sci-fantasy, which both aren't really genres I like, but you can see he is building a Star Wars sort of world in the first issue alone. Great stuff.

It's the best first issue I've read since Chew #1.
Read it today, courtesy of Iggy. I think I want to get #2. The character The Will and his cat have me intrigued.
