Removing Adhesive Pricetags

Post by NorthAmMan »

Hey everyone,

This is my first post. Glad I stumbled across your website. I just started collecting Valiant two weeks ago actually and find the whole thing very exciting.

Anyway, I recently purchased a large stash of assorted Valiant titles for what I thought was a great price of 20 cents a pop. Anyway, all of these have a small adhesive price tag. I set about removing them.

The first came off easily, but the second pulled off a bit of the cover of the comic. I'm just wondering if there is a quick safe method for removing pricetags. I'm sure you get that question all the time, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Thanks again. I look forward to posting often in the future.

There's no safe way to remove these stickers.
Sorry.

Welcome to the boards.

Your best shot is, IMO, to remove them VERY slowly and if they start to tear the book underneath, stop and let it go on that comic. I probably wouldn't use anything like goo-b-gone, etc. but if you come across a nice Harby 1 or other rare/low print run book (the price guide will provide info in this area) there are a few other possible tricks. If it's a common post-unity, I'd just get a new one for the collection (usually not too expensive -- see KC collectables, daydreams comics or many other excellent sellers on this site).

Welcome to the insanity. I'd say run, but it's already too late. :thumb:

I heard you can use a dryer from the bathroom and heat the sticker off. Also if you had something that could steam it off that would work (a cloth iron perhaps?). Of course these both could cause other problems but if it's not working on a particular comic and it's a valiant common I'd say experiment. ;)

I'm not sure if it works well, but try heating it up. If you can get the sticky stuff heated up, you might have a better chance of taking the sticker off. Let me know if it helps.

Don't use any liquids or the books will be further damaged.

Take your time pulling those off. If done carefully it's possible.

Wow,

I'm really impressed with the board activity here. I've never had so many helpful responses in so short a time.

Thanks for the advice.

I use something called VM&P Naphtha to get the stickers and all glue off of the cover. It is like butane, only purer. It will not harm the cover inks whatsoever and will completely evaporate, no staining. You can get it at a good hardware store.

You apply it liberally on the sticker, wait a minute or so and it should peel right off, then use a cotton ball to get the rest of the sticker residue off.

Works great for old tape too. The thing about stickers though, is that if they were on the book for awhile it will cause discoloration to the book that is irreversible and you'll end up with a sticker-shaped discoloration in place of the sticker. I think it depends on the type of sticker glue used and how it reacts with the cover stock.

Well-ventilated areas only please, don't blow yourself up if you decide to give it a try!

Use alcohol and a piece of cotton, it works.

Put some alcohol on the cotton and then rub the sticker with it. Once it's wet, it should come off easily.

It's worked for me.

I found this most recent stash in a bargain bin at a Half Price book store. I suppose that's why they had the stickers on them.

They were in very good condition otherwise.

Never had a comic with a sticker on the cover, but I've removed lots of stickers from action figure cards. What works best for me is the blow dryer method. Heat the sticker with a blow dryer until it gets nice and warm and it peels right off! Usually takes all the gum residue with it. Works really good. On action figures, this is only good if the sticker is on the card. If it's on the bubble the heat will warp the bubble. Also, on action figures be careful on where the hot air is blowing so as not to inadvertantly heat and warp the bubble.

Another possible technique is naptha or lighter fluid as it is commonly called. However, do not use it in the traditional manner and light it! This is the miracle juice I have used to clean guitars with all kinds of stickers on them and restore value to once adhesive-laden instruments. Just a little bit will do and it shouldn't damage the books. You may just be better off using some of the commons as they are called around here as reader copies and working some magic with some of the fine sellers around here as was previously mentioned.

Welcome to the boards...fellow noob too, but not new to valiant. Check out my interests if you have any questions on the topics.

Later!
