Shadowman, Shadowman. Wherefore art thou Shadowman?

I dunno I can see it working. I like the Day of the Dead mask. I don't mind the Constantine threads. Lets face it Shadowman is going to have to be updated just like the rest of the Valiant Universe. As much as I would rather go back in time to Bob Hall's awesome Shadowman, you can't put him back into a leather biker jacket and boots, it would never sell.

Not feelin' the Valiant "come as you are" approach to superhero haberdashery?Heath wrote:I'm just not digging the shirt and tie and trench coat look. Where's the fedora? That's just not Shadowman.

I can understand a wardrobe update. But it has to have the energy of the original. And there is nothing energetic about that tumblr image. I don't want dark and gritty Shadowman. Acclaim did that and it sucked.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

The mask reminds we of Shadowman but the suit, tie and trench coat remind me of the updated Ivar. Would they have two characters with such similar looks? Could this be Ivar? The "Good Night" suggests Shadowman but wouldn't think they'd want two characters to look so similar.

Actually I always thought Shadowman WAS "dark and gritty". New Orleans. Jazz musician. Dark arts and mysticism. Voodoo Loa. His origin is in a failed murder attempt on his life. He starts as crony of Darque! Storylines are gonna be even grittier in a post-Katrina N'awlins

Re: Shadowman, Shadowman. Wherefore art thou Shadowman?
Unlike the other photos fromt the tumblr teases that showed "completed products" like the top of the Harada QR cover or the blacked out and partial Rai image that was just released, the "Shadowman" image seemed much more of a rough sketch. Like something Aja (or another artist) did just to put a Shadowman tease out there. It's entirely possible the design has evolved since then, or that Ivar was designed later and that may now impact the design for Shadowman.

Does anyone really want to wear a trench coat in New Orleans!?! Shadowman in a post-Katrina New Orleans could make some really interesting stories.

I saw a woman wearing a trench coat in Lafayette once. The Dirt Gang wrote:Does anyone really want to wear a trench coat in New Orleans!?! Shadowman in a post-Katrina New Orleans could make some really interesting stories.
But then, it was Mardi Gras and she wasn't wearing anything under it...

Seems he might be down & out, homeless. When that happens, a trench coat is your bed, blanket and shelter and being out on the street like that you learn to carry all your belongings with you.
We're just speculating on a rough sketch. I have no real idea where this series will go. Let's leave it at: SHADOWMAN will be back!! and wait for more details to emerge.

Interesting comment... since playing a saxophone in New Orleans could be a "profession" for a homeless person.PFunkJAzz wrote:Seems he might be down & out, homeless.
You'd be out all night, watching the city... basically Rorschach and Batman.

Hmmmmmmmm
A homeless guy who plays the sax, watches the city and is a combination of Rorschach and Batman who finds a mask on the street after Mardi Gras celebrations and decides to be the city's protector ...
Is it just me or does it look like there is some red on his shirt, almost like blood or something? to the left of the knot in his tie

I think Heath is referring to the Ennis version where things do get way too dark and bizarre. When you start off a reboot by killing off the previous hero and sticking his sax "where the sun don't shine"... well, you know it's going to be a weird series....PFunkJAzz wrote:Actually I always thought Shadowman WAS "dark and gritty". I think y'all are missing the greatest potential of Ninjak: Nobody seems to like him. Because of that, Valiant can take all kind of liberties with him and no one will care.

Awesome news about Shadowman! One of my favorites!!
The only thing I'm not too excited about is Ninjak. The character and book never interested me. I would much rather see Hard Corps return, but I will of course give the book a chance.

cool shadowman ideas! As far as Ninjak, I feel like he's a totally untapped character like Time Walker, they have so much potential to be great, all it takes is a fresh start and great creativity. His look was always cool, just the reading that sucked.

My opinion: Ninjak should have never been old guard British heritage. Got my anti-imperialist blood boiling! Clearly he should have been Asian, but that would have just run up against Rai. I'm a sucker for anything with Asian chix and katanas (Aspen's EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT series and Image's new EPIC KILL mini), I'd love to see Ninjak rebooted in this manner!Spagg wrote:Awesome news about Shadowman! I kinda dug the neo-hippie vibe of Geomancer, but that didn't get much bounce. Maybe as a secondary character?
