Twelve Runs for a year on an island

Post by xodacia81 »

Old topic, but a goodie. In no order (no Valiants)r:

Sandman
Fables
Chew (once it's done)
The Walking Dead
Invincble
Hellboy/BPRD
Cerebus (based on the little I've read)
Bone
Green Lantern (all titles 1989-present)
Superman (all titles 1986-1996)
100 Bullets
Elseworlds (everything)

So, anybody else?

Can you really count all GL from 89 to present, thats not a run, same with Supes?

Y last Man
Sandman
Fables
Invincible
Chew
The Walking Dead (even though, I've dropped off a desert island would be a good place to resume)
Swamp Thing (Alan Moore - from what I've read)
The Flash - Mark Waid
Batman - Grant Morrison (whole saga across the titles)
Daredevil - Bendis
Booster Gold - Geoff Johns
Crisis on Infinite Earths

These Vertigo/Image finite/long solo creator-ed books are perfect!

52 is a good choice, need to give that a reread at some point.

What a great title for a thread! Man, I'd really have to think about this.

Ok, ok...I cheated. But I do like modern GL and that era of Supes. I might replace Supes with Y: The Last Man. I just wanted to make sure I had some more typical superhero stuff on the list.

Ooooo, 52. That was good. I didn't get around to it until a few years back, in trade form, and quite enjoyed it. The extras, detailing the behind the scenes planning, really added to my enjoyment of the story.

I like your list. Quasar would be number one on my list, and I also enjoy Morrison's Animal Man and Millar's Swamp Thing stuff (that last issue is one of my all time favorites). I was surprised to see Peyer's Hourman on your list, I did not figure it was going to be on anyone's list but my own :thumb:

Neat to see the Savage Dragon mentions too 8-) . I am almost done writing mine, cool topic.

Hourman was one of my favorite series of all time. Everything about that book was perfect. Lead character, supporting cast, art by Rags Morales...everything fell into place for that book to be great. A shame it's been basically forgotten. I remember Mark Waid always saying it was his favorite comic book and his standing offer to refund people's money out of his pocket if they bought an issue and didn't like it.

Honestly, 1999 through around 2003-4 was one of my favorite times at DC. JSA was back in force written by James Robinson, Morrison's JLA was building steam, the Superman titles were finally getting decent creative teams. The Batman titles with the No Man's Land story (which I loved). Robin, Impulse and Young Justice were excellent at the time. Devin Grayson and Mark Buckingham's Titans was a phenomenal, but often overlooked series as well.

The last issue of Swamp Thing is one of my favorites also. The whole thing with Anton Arcane was beautifully pulled-off and that last scene with the bird is just incredible.

Welcome to the board! I like you already! :thumb:

Before i can answer, i need to know three things; Are there other people on this island? Is there a black smoke monster on this island? And any booze?

No black smoke monster. The only other person is a ball named Wilson and the only booze is a 5th of Tequilla that you found stuck in a bundle next to some rotting meat.

If the tequilla is still sealed then it's probably ok to drink, so I'm in.

Sandman
Fables
Walking Dead
100 Bullets
Cerebus
Stormwatch/Authority - Ellis' run
Planetary
Powers
Batman Animated (ok to bring all 4 series?)
Watchmen
Astro City
Gotham Central

the moore run on Swamp Thing

Pre-Unity/Unity Valiant of course

Dang, how did I forget DD v2? I'd like to revise my list to include this instead of Orion (as much as it pains me to remove Orion)

I considered DD, but then decided I wouldn't want anything too dark. Then, I considered Waid's run, but it's too early.

Scalped is dark too, but it's too damn good not to have to read.

I was thinking of a somewhat forgotten run, or at least "era" in recent comics, and that is the Smith/Meltzer stuff from Green Arrow. 21 issues that reintroduced and redefined a character that had floundered since Grell left. Am I crazy in thinking of that as one of the better runs in the last twenty years?
