What comics are you reading now?

Just finished reading the Waid JLA run (well, technically I've only read through #58; 59 is a fill-in and 60 is Waid's final issue and I didn't realize it so I don't have it yet). I have to say, Wait ended it with just as big of a bang as he began his run. "Terror Incognita" was like watching an action-packed Michael Bay movie that actually requires a little thought. Fast-paced and never dull, it stays packed full of twists and turns, and awesome moments.

It's also a great story in the fact that it serves a kind of double-bookend role. It definitely serves as a conclusion to the character journey that Waid began 16 issues earlier with "Tower of Babel," with Batman, the JLA outsider throughout most of the Waid run, being the one to address the the "outsiderness" of J'onn. The person voted off the team confirming resoundingly that they are an absolutely solid team. It also unexpectedly serves as a bookend or coda to the very beginning of Morrison's JLA run, dealing with the threat of the White Martians once and for all.

Overall I must say that this was a very satisfying creative run to read, and never felt bogged down as Morrison's run seemed to get during it's middle section. I HIGHLY recommend this JLA run to anybody who hasn't read it, though it's probably better/more rewarding if you've read Morrison's run beforehand.

I'm trying to think about what to read through next, and considering that this is the last Wednesday of the month, that means that my DCBS box for the month will be shipping out tomorrow or Friday, meaning I'll have my current books in by Monday or Tuesday next week. I think I'm going to catch up on my more current stuff between now and Christmas in preparation for my vacation, where I'm planning to spend lots of quality time reading past creative runs, as I've discussed in my vacation threads.

X-Men First Class 1-8

I finished this. It was terrific. However, I feel like Marvel and the editors really dropped the ball on this book. IMO, although the covers are beautiful, they don't match the tone of the interiors. If I was Marvel, I would've put a nice, attractive cover on these and tried to get them into book stores as single issues. It's books like these that are great reads individually or as a whole.

I still see digest size Archie's in grocery stores. These issues would be perfect in that format.

I've read alot of stuff lately, but this one is a keeper for me.

Since you thoroughly enjoyed the first series, I'd recommend the ongoing that followed - it's in the same quality and fun as the original.

- Slott started begin the sole writer at #648 (Big Time arc). It has been the same quality / vibe since then.
- It has really been terrific since Brand New Day. The only thing is that the revolving writers meant a bit of inconsistency.

I didn't like it at all. The art is nice, but it reads really quick and there's no real plot going on. This title is the new Spidey team up book that replaces the old Marvel Team Up. The artist is like straight from the 90s so it's all flashy, but nearly every page is a pin up.

If you like 90s Image books or you just want to see some heroes punching each other, this is for you.

...nothing. Guess I'm out (though I had an idea for a Valiant comic that I'm currently drawing the thumbnails for -8X11 sized thumbnails just to experiment with sequentials).

Not saying what characters, when I've got a completed thumbnailed book I'll possibly post it. I'll have to write the damn thing also. Right now I'm writing it in images, not words.

Finally finished reading my way through the Morrison Animal Man run yesterday. Wow, reading it to its conclusion really gives you a sense of the overall vision Morrison had for what he wanted to do with that character. So much of what transpired had been brewing for such a long time! I love reading the letter pages too! One thing about that book is that it was never short on people wanting to share their opinion!

I was initially going to work to get caught up on my current books after finishing that piece of the Animal Man series (I have the entire remainder of the series as well that I'll get to eventually) but instead I found myself reaching for another back issue run that I haven't read yet: Mark Waid's JLA run from 2000-2001. 16 issues and I've read over half of it already today. Overall I've really enjoyed it, as it kept with the whole "widescreen blockbuster" approach Grant Morrison had through the first 3 1/2 years of that book. I also like how Waid has kept a larger, ongoing character interaction/development aspect through the whole run so far. I'm currently on issue #53, which is nearing the end of the arc where the heroes' secret identities have separated from them as entirely different people. From there I have the 4-part "Terror Incognita" arc which finishes Waid's run.

Who knows where I'll go from there. I'm tempted to read some older Legion of Super-heroes, either the DnA run or the series after that lasted for 50 issues that started with Waid/Kitson and ended with Shooter/Manapul. I've read the Shooter/Manapul run but missed the Waid/Kitson bit entirely.

Hey dude, dug out the last few issues of Animal Man over the weekend and relived the finale. A stunning finish and I love the way he validates his 'it's just a dream finale'. A fitting end to an awesome run.

Wanted 1-6 - It seems like the movie script was written after the first issue of this book came out. The two weren't very much alike after that.

Joe the Barbarian - I'm halfway through this. It's............ interesting. No way I could've read this as singles though.

Quick summary - A boy goes into hypoglycemic shock at his home after school bullies steal his candy bar from him. The entire story is based on the hypo shock episode. It's an adventure story with the adventure consisting of 1.) getting a soda and 2.) flipping the breaker in his house.

I'd definitely recommend reading it. With that being said, if you've read I Kill Giants, you've read something fairly similar that is far superior to Joe the Barbarian. Giants was better in that the main character was humanized much more. In Joe, all we know is that the kid has diabetes, his dad doesn't live with him and his mom is about to lose their home. There's not much to make the reader care for the main character.

But it is a pretty sweet adventure story and the art by Sean Murphy is really awesome.

One cool bit - since it's Vertigo, the DC characters can appear in the book and they do in bits and pieces.

I'm reading Star Wars Legacy. I stated at #0 and I'm up to #8.

It's the first Star wars comics I've read (except for the 3 Purge books) and I really like them. Pretty good so far.

Legacy was really good for quite a while. And I don't care for Star Wars comics.

I'm really enjoying it. I'm totally interested in Star wars books now.

Just finished the last Legacy book I have. I really like it. I think a entire new world just opened up to me. The non-movie Star Wars Universe.

I picked up a few more (just 2) Legacy books. Just read #11, I really dig these books.

After the Desert Island podcast, C-lo got me interested in Grendel (I've read some, the Spar books and War Child). I found a HC that reprinted the 1st 4 stories, Primer #2 and 1-3. I CAN see what the bog deal is. Very cool storytelling and technique.


I also read Severed 1-3 by Image. I'd say I'm interested in the story, I like the art style. I'll keep a eye out for #4 on the cheap.

If you are a Morrison fan, you'll definitely like it. I don't usually care for his stuff, but this wasn't way over the top crazy.

If you end up wanting to track it down, give me a shout. I'd pass my copies on at the price I paid - a buck a book plus shipping. I'll end up putting them up on ebay eventually anyway.

Just read the latest issue of All-New Batman: Brave and the Bold (#13) today and next to Nick Spencer and R.B. Silva's Jimmy Olsen one-shot earlier this year, it's the best new comic book I've read all year.



The Phantom Stranger recruits Robins from all across history to help save Batman's life. EVERYBODY is here. Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Damian Wayne and even Carrie Kelly (from The Dark Knight Returns) all represent. It's strange seeing Carrie and Damian in a DC Kids title, but the story is incredible and is probably the best Robin story ever. The story is about how the very different personalities of each Robin give them unique value to the mission at hand. Guest appearances by Ra's al Ghul and Madame Xanadu, too.

Whether you dig all ages stuff or not, if you're a Batman and Robin fan, a DC fan, or just a fan of good, fun classic comic book stories you owe it to yourself to check this out.

Yeah, I would have advised against it from the bland solicitations.
The original title was once good a loooooooooooooonnngggg time ago. Now it seems Marvel has no clue what to do with the property. The last few iterations I read were horrible, plus not a big fan of Dodson art = pass!

Of course I will always pick up Hulk monthlies...that's what started me reading comics so many years ago.

Anyway, the newly re-booted Incredible Hulk title seems absurd. Suddenly Banner is a raving lunatic seeking ways to re-merge with Hulk (after finally being rid of him! Which by the way was already done back in 314...but I digress;). Meanwhile, Hulk is cool, calm and slow to action. In the end it'll probably get explained away, ergo, Banner acted like that due to being split from part of himself making him unstable...yadda, yadda, yadda....and the Silvestri art = meh. Ok at parts, other times the layouts seem poorly contrived.

Now, in comparison the Hulk book with General Ross continues to be superb. When Loeb wrote this title it was god awful but Jeff Parker has done a fine job for many months now and the art has been consistently excellent with fine coloring setting the mood. It's also interesting to have Ross relying on his past military background/strategy during encounters. Pass on Incredible for now but pick up this one
