300 by Frank Miller.
I read #1 last night. Pretty good so far. Not much of a written story, but the first few pages of the art is beautiful.
Overall good. Visually it was good, story wise parts were VERY cool, but as a read, it was quick (on the words). I did take my time looking at some of the pics, but still a pretty quick read/look. It is a very good (almost great) example of what the medium can be.
Not sure what I'm going to read next?

They are well worth it, all 13 of them. Keep in mind, the story suddenly becomes much larger after the first trade, so give it more than just an issue or two. I'd also suggest Starman, if you can find the trades or monthlies.Elveen wrote:Finished Ghost.xodacia81 wrote:Do you have a set of 100 Bullets? Very interested in 100 B. It will take me awhile to read it. I'll have to get it on the cheap, but I think I'll try to get the TPBs. Maybe at some cheap trade bins at cons.

First Class is excellent fun! silver age stories with modern sensibilities.400yrs wrote:X-Men First Class 1-3 of 8
This is the best mutant book I've read in a while. I love that each of the 3 issues I've read so far are self contained. It's fun and funny. Good stuff.
It was the subject of one of my Retro-Reads: X-Men First Class review

Re: What comics are you reading now?
I just finished reading both of Garth Ennis' Adventures in the Rifle Brigade mini-series. They were in the same fun style as his Marvel Knights Punisher run.
Now I'm going to read X-Man #1-75!

I'm reading Star Wars Legacy. I stated at #0 and I'm up to #8.
It's the first Star wars comics I've read (except for the 3 Purge books) and I really like them. Pretty good so far.

I suggest Dark Empire. The first volume is by far the better series, especially if you can get a copy with the text pages at the back. Also, the first few years of Tales of the Jedi were pretty good, from 93-96.Elveen wrote:I'm reading Star Wars Legacy. I stated at #0 and I'm up to #8.

Legacy was really good for quite a while. And I don't care for Star Wars comics.

I've tried a few and the only one that really stuck for a while is Legacy. Dark Empire, I do remember being good, but that was almost 20 years ago that I read it.

Jay gave me some "Tomio never lied" and tell me what SW novels to read. And maybe a reading order.Jay Tomio wrote:I've found that while the comics generally have good talent on them, they feel kind of wheak sauce if you read the novels, and if having to pick one mode of EU fix, the novels all the way for me (though many of them aren't good either).
Legacy was for sure solid though, and as I noted above actually was an additive for me as a book fan.

I'm not prepared to call them the best, but they are certainly the most important, an in many ways revitalized the franchise (I know that's hard to believe considering how huge the franchise is, but it's true). Nostalgia aside, IMHO, it's the most enjoyable Star Wars experience I've had in any medium.

How far after the end of RotJ does the Timothy Zahn Thrawn trilogy take place? Still Luke and Leia?

I Finished Maus II. Still excellent although the first was a touch better. I could really go for a nice big oversized HC of the complete thing. However, it looks like the HC is about the same length and width as these small gns.

Jay Tomio wrote:Yes, it's essentially the direct (5 years after Endor) aftermath and it's greatness. It, however, introduces all the major players to come after, it's the EU bible and I think tough to read even more goodness (Legacy of the Force) w/o it. At this point, Han and Leia's first children are in plain (this is not a spoiler)as she's pregnant to begin the series.Elveen wrote:Jay Tomio wrote:The foundation is the Timothy Zahn Thrawn trilogy. There are no major EU books beyond Luke and Leia yet. The next generation is HUGE for sure, but that would just put the original trilogy characters as older adults.
There is no issue of not being able to get into it because of the films. It's awesome sauce.
Tomio never lied. THX

Just finished the last Legacy book I have. I really like it. I think a entire new world just opened up to me. The non-movie Star Wars Universe.

Road to Perdition. I thought the movie was great. The story in the comic was much different, but equally great. One small problem is that some of the gunfight scenes are tough to make out in the black and white.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
Finally finished reading my way through the Morrison Animal Man run yesterday. Wow, reading it to its conclusion really gives you a sense of the overall vision Morrison had for what he wanted to do with that character. So much of what transpired had been brewing for such a long time! I love reading the letter pages too! One thing about that book is that it was never short on people wanting to share their opinion!
I was initially going to work to get caught up on my current books after finishing that piece of the Animal Man series (I have the entire remainder of the series as well that I'll get to eventually) but instead I found myself reaching for another back issue run that I haven't read yet: Mark Waid's JLA run from 2000-2001. 16 issues and I've read over half of it already today. Overall I've really enjoyed it, as it kept with the whole "widescreen blockbuster" approach Grant Morrison had through the first 3 1/2 years of that book. I also like how Waid has kept a larger, ongoing character interaction/development aspect through the whole run so far. I'm currently on issue #53, which is nearing the end of the arc where the heroes' secret identities have separated from them as entirely different people. From there I have the 4-part "Terror Incognita" arc which finishes Waid's run.
Who knows where I'll go from there. I'm tempted to read some older Legion of Super-heroes, either the DnA run or the series after that lasted for 50 issues that started with Waid/Kitson and ended with Shooter/Manapul. I've read the Shooter/Manapul run but missed the Waid/Kitson bit entirely.

X-Men First Class 1-8
I finished this. It was terrific. However, I feel like Marvel and the editors really dropped the ball on this book. IMO, although the covers are beautiful, they don't match the tone of the interiors. If I was Marvel, I would've put a nice, attractive cover on these and tried to get them into book stores as single issues. It's books like these that are great reads individually or as a whole.
I still see digest size Archie's in grocery stores. These issues would be perfect in that format.
I've read alot of stuff lately, but this one is a keeper for me.

On the basis of Only the Valiant's desert island episode:
Read Moriarty 1-5 and really enjoyed it, especially issue 5. Looking forward to reading more.
Read the first 2 Fables tpbs last night - excellent so far and will try to read the next one tonight. Great recommendations from the OTV crew.

Great. IMO Fables gets SUPER good around the 5-7 TPB.
Also, I stoked to know that Moriarty #5 was god, I have not got it yet, but now I will.

Moriarty 5 was excellent, having finally got my hands on it. I think this arc could outdo the first one. As for Fables, I think March of the Wooden Soldiers, the 4th trade, was where it got SUPER good. 5-10, of course, are untouchable for now, with # 6 being probably the best arc Willingham has ever done.Elveen wrote:dbngaa wrote:On the basis of Only the Valiant's desert island episode:
