Your definition of complete.

Post by kevinbastos »

So, my opinion has changed on 'completion' over the last few years.

Initially, I wanted a copy of all of the stuff to read. From Magnus with coupon 1 all the way to Unity 2000 #3.

And a copy of the script.

In the last year, I went back, joined you fine folks on the board, and started collecting all of the cover variants, golds, platinums and reds. Acclaim and Valiant. Then, I finally finished with the VVSS's.

The collection is to my definition right now, complete.

Of course, I have the two Visitor vs the Valiant Universe price variants. Mocking me.

I haven't yet started in on the newsstand variants and Acclaim no-price variants - especially since I think only one of the Turok no price variants have been found, right?

dbngaa - Don't start on the Euro ones yet. No ready. Yet.

Anyhoo - what is YOUR definition of complete? Does it include Acclaim? Variants? Premiums?

Until you are satisfied - if you are happy with what you got then awesome - if you have to have that variant or multiple printing then that is fine to. It just depends on your own taste.

Me I have to be honest I get anal retentive - I want all variants and printings including to a point any book the story may have been reprinted in to include TPBs
Everybody Is Right Until Someone Else Disagrees.

Complete for me is every issue (not including punx or captian joyner, etc.), all the variants, in 9.4 raw or above and all the keys in CGC 9.8. I do not include the newstand issues.

No Acclaim either. It looks like it's all garbage to me.

Forgot - I also picked up sealed copies of all of the Valiant books and TPBs, along with an open one, too.

They both exist. Erskine71/Zero found them first, I believe.
SVair had some scans of the packs they came in.
I have them both, and I believe SonicDan found them at Hastings a few years back.

Our collector inventories currently show at least 6 copies of each:

If you guys haven't seen that page before, you'll probably also be interested in the Valiant counts:

Interesting. But I don't think I'm interested. Yet...

BTW - on a related topic, is the 'priced' variant less common that the 'no price' variant in Shadowman Volume 3 painted cover?

Yes, "with price" seems to be tougher than "no price" for Shadowman Vol 3 #1.

For right now, "Complete" just means a reader copy of the VH1 series. When that's done then I'll aim for readers of VH2-VH3 (Which I already have a lot of), and then maybe variants. I'd like to have a complete 100% of everything one day, but unless I get much, much richer I just don't see it happening.

True, having only half can be very frustrating. Either way, a burden will be lifted.

I'd be ecstatic to own 1% of what you own. I would have a long road ahead of me if I were to try and match your collection. (and expensive)

Ditto. I started when Unity started. I finished - again - at the start of this year. Initially, a read copy, then slowly growing...

Try hunting a few of the gaps. It's fun.

Heh yeah I have some huge gaps almost everything pre-unity, I have all the unity era stuff until about maybe half a year after chaos effect, and then nothing, Maybe a few of the early acclaim reboot issues, but I generally hated most of them.

Look for Quantum & Woody stuff. Excellent. Best of the Acclaim stuff - and better than much of Valiant stuff. I'd put it near my fave stuff.

For me it started with a regular copy of each issue. Then the golds started...and the VVSS...and the price variants. Btw, don't overlook X-O 43 and Bloodshot 30-32. Also had to fill in the Acclaim variants (some are tough as hell!). Then had to pickup all the trades, even though I already had the comics. I got lucky and scored a stack of Valiant Voices from an LCS...can forget those either.

So far I've resisted on newsstands - when I find them for a couple $$ or less I pick them up but haven't avidly pursued them.

A Bloodshot platinum would be nice but so few exist...I don't worry about it. Unless I get lucky that's the one book I'll never own...now if somebody would kindly hook me up with a Bloodshot 31 price variant my set of everything else will be complete.

Things definitely snowball once the itch kicks in....
