What comics are you reading now?

Everything else comic-related that's not VALIANT-related.

After finishing the interestingly weird House Of Secrets, I've moved on to the most-recent Manhunter series.

This is par for the course for Vertigo. Most series start out with a set # of issues or at the very least, a set story. Even longer running stuff like Fables has an end game. Willingham has mentioned timed and again that he is taking the Dave Simm approach to Fables in terms of "the blocks I am building the story in", which to me would indicate 300 issues, split into four sections of 75 issues each. So far, I see nothing to refute my hypothesis. Honestly, I like the whole "maxi series to the max" approach. Best book on the market-CHEW-is only going to go 60 issues.

You know what I like about that book? Each issue is almost like a mini arc. I may not remember what's going on from issue to issue, but I can always remember really quickly and if not, each issue is good on its own anyway.

Just re-read Panic in the Sky. Honestly, I feel like this story was overshadowed by the Death of Superman and never really got it's due as one of the great Superman stories. The cast of characters and just the scale of the story is epic and I thought it really drove it home that yeah, Superman has these great powers and all, but one of his greatest abilities is his leadership and the fact that everyone looks to him for what needs to be done. No matter how bad things are or what is happening, when Superman's feet hit the ground you know that business is going to get handled.

This story is also is a good place to go for people who have given up on Superman due to the relaunch ( :hi: ). All the elements that made the early 90's Superman distinctive are here. Bibbo, Project Cadmus, Maxima, etc....they're all here.

Yeah, Panic in the Sky was a lot of fun. I think that was my first ever Superman purchase.

I started collecting Superman with PITS, although I never managed to find all the issues and so never read the whole thing. It was very well done. I have said for years and years that from the summer of 1992 until the end of 1994, from the PITS story through to the aftermath of the Fall of Metropolis story, that the Superman family of books was at a creative peak and matched in terms of continuity-at least for the era-only by early Valiant.

Me either. I have to say, though, that the one thing that I really didn't enjoy about this era was John Bogdanove's art at times. Some of it was downright god-awful. I knew ha was capable of more because I'd seen it, but it felt rushed and sloppy a lot of the time.

His work on Man of Steel was very...well, elongated or "chunky/blocky" at times, especially when it came to drawing closeups of biceps or Steel throwing his hammer. Bog is a very aq'd taste and I just never got totally hooked. The biggest shock for me is that the otherwise wonderful Dave Michelinie, upon taking over for Roger Stern, took Action Comics in a direction I was not pleased with. More than anything else, the direction of the books upon the departure of Jurgens and Stern is what caused my loss of interest, something that has been maintained to this day.

So, the mid-2000s Manhunter series was pretty well-done. It's sure to appeal to fans of Bendis/Maleev's Alias. My only complaint was that it "fast-forwarded" not once - but twice within 38 issues. The first time was OK but the second was very disorienting.

After Manhunter, I checked out Frank Miller's Holy Terror which was terrible. I didn't feel like much of a plot was built up so there was not much to resolve. I can certainly see the Batman comparisons and it just seems like the main appeal of it is the "controversy" a comic about confronting terrorists will bring.

I also read the first True Blood series, which, if you know the characters, was a decent read. It almost feels like a "lost episode". Nothing happens that impacts the characters but some back stories are revealed for most of the main characters. I expected it to be a lot worse than it was.

The latest few issues of Way's Deadpool have been kinda fun. It follows a female psychologist as she tries to help her latest patient: Deadpool.

I think I'm going to take on Doom 2099, next.

Amazing Spider-Man 670 - Great cover, awesome story.

Spider Island has been a really good event so far. Slott is doing this really well. All I've read is the main ASM titles and the I Love NY one shot. I just bought the Shang Chi issue as well. All you need to read is the main ASM book to understand it.

If you want to turn off your brain and read some good super hero bubble gum / popcorn comics, give Spider Island a read. The reads have been really enjoyable so far. If you are looking for some great literature / meta *SQUEE*, then look elsewhere.
