That's the element I love most. It makes super hero books so much more interesting.
They have done this a bit with Spidey lately, but it's impossible to do it all the time with a character with so much continuity and titles.
Invincible is definitely the best super hero book on the market and at times, is my favorite book all around.
If you haven't read past the issues in the Compendium, there's a whole lot of great stuff you still have to read.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
I'm reading Snyder's run on Detective. I've read 871 - 878. This is good stuff. My favorite issue is 875 which I've read before. That issue by itself can be read and enjoyed by a new reader with no problem at all.
The issues I like most are the ones about Commissioner Gordon and his son. As usual, I feel that most Batman books are better when the cape isn't involved.
Artwise, I really like the Francesco Francavilla issues. Although I love all of the Jock covers, the interiors feel a bit sparse and the coloring is off. Still, the whole run so far is a great read.

Invincible is an awesome bookgeocarr wrote:I just finished reading the Invincible Compendium. It is as good as everyone says. The thing I lke best about Kirkman is how he brings the "world outside your window" and realism to the characters lives. My absolute favorite thing about Kirkman's writing is that he doesn't overwite anything - not the story and not the characters. He flawlessly weaves back and forth between multiple long and short-term plots without frustrating the reader. Highly recommended!!![]()

Re: What comics are you reading now?
I finished the Snyder run on Detective 871-881. I highly recommend it. This is probably the best long arc of Batman I've ever read. The first story arc, The Black Mirror, was good, but the Eyes Wide Shut angle lowered it down a notch for me. However, Snyder tied that small arc into the larger arc at the end.
The villain in the story is excellent. I'll say no more than that in an effort not to spoil anything.
I hope they collect this into a nice Hardcover. It's something I'd put on my shelf and re-read every once in a while. It's a mystery and character story in one. Snyder is an excellent writer. I'm glad he was given the main title.
Whole arc grade:
Story - 10/10
Art - 8/10
Covers - 10/10

I just read X-Men Schism #1-4 and not impressed. The story has very little depth, which I expect from Jason Aaron (who writes one of my favorite monthly tites (SCALPED)). Just disappointing.
Pull List: I only buy TPB's, HC's and Hellboy comics

I didn't read this particular X-Men book, but I've never been impressed with anything he has written in the super hero world at all.
Same sort of thing with Layman. I can't dig it because you don't get the same heart in the corporate character stories.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
Read New Teen Titans: Games.
The Titans as they were during one of the best comics series of all time and featuring one of my favourite recurring side-characters, King Faraday (loved the character since I first read his puntastic name).
I love the creative team team to the point that I would probably buy their stuff if they were to put out an alphabet kids' book. They just work so well together. The fact that it has taken over 20 years and several rewrites to get this book out and it still reads well enough that you wouldn't notice there had been such a major issue with the publishing schedule (this puts some of the Image guys to shame) is testament to their greatness.
Buy this book. Seriously. Get it, read it, marvel at the Mighty George Perez's art and revel in Wolfman's genius when you get to the seriously risky twist at the end.
Go.
Now.
What is wrong with you?
Why are you still reading my nonsense?
Fools.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
I was reading the above posts regarding Invincible and I thought I'd chime in with a negative comment about the last issue I read.
I have read up to TPB 11 I think. Then I stopped. I missed the whole Viltrimite War, but I wanted to see if I could get back in with the most current issue, which is #82, I believe. Has the bound green lady on the cover.
Anyway, (Spoiler alert) Invincible decides to talk to the bad lady and try to reason with her instead of fight. Later, he says that he has been rethinking his outlook as a super hero. He wants to talk more and punch less. It's supposed ti be a new angle. My beef is, didn't he do this way back in the beginning of the book with the big one eyed alien that his dad had been fighting forever? Didn't he kinda show his dad up, by doing that and prove he was "ready" for the challenges facing him? Just seemed weird to me, that "suddenly" he's re-thinking something that he obviously believed quite a long time ago.
Otherwise I liked everything. Especially Eve gaining weight. Zephyr Was Hot after all...

Re: What comics are you reading now?
This is quite simple actually. Yes, he did do that with Allen the Alien early in the series. However, things changed since then.dave wrote:I was reading the above posts regarding Invincible and I thought I'd chime in with a negative comment about the last issue I read.

Your quote below is the problem:
dave wrote:I have read up to TPB 11 I think. Then I stopped. I missed the whole Viltrimite War, but.
If you stopped at TPB 11 (issue 59), You missed about 20 issues of some really messed up and dark stuff for Mark (and some of the best stuff in the series. You've also spoiled a few things by reading ahead. Invincible is a book that is best read all the way through. You can dig it if you jump in, but you get alot more payoffs if you read straight through.

I haven't read a comic in quite sometime.
I've a buy list, but have other things to occupy my time.
Wow...14 years ago THAT would never been something I thought I'd see myself type.

A friend at work loaned me the Ex Machina TPB - the first 100 days. Finished up the first chapter. Got a chill. Can't remember the last time that happened on a first-read of a comic.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
This is the latest book I've read. No spoilers.

By Bendis and Bagley. Inks by Rubenstein.
This was......... not good at all. I gave this a shot because it's Bagley's first shot at a creator owned comic.
The idea itself is interesting. The writing was all over the place. There were way too many characters and nothing to connect you to any of them. The art was a wreck. Something went terribly wrong between the pencils, the inks and the coloring. I can't tell you what it is, but it doesn't look good at all.
Who in the heck thought that cover was a good idea anyway?
Finally, if anyone else read this, can you please tell me what it is that I missed on the last page that I was supposed to get. The second to the last page seemed to set up a cliffhanger for the last page and then you turn to the last page and it just seems like a wasted page. What did I miss here?
Needless to say, I won't be getting the next issue and this is likely to die out after 4 issues if it makes it that far.

I'm reading the 90s Vertigo House of Secret series. Very twisted but interesting read so far.

Hmm. I'll pass on Unwritten for now. Might try it later if your experience with the trade is positive. Let us know.xodacia81 wrote:I just picked up the first trade for a dollar. Haven't read it yet. Incorruptible has not disappointed thus far but would say the early issues of Irredeemable are a slightly better read. Have heard good things about Moore's Echo series so looking forward to reading it.
Following these monthly: Irredeemable, BPRD, Dark Horse Presents, Brimstone, and Mystery Men.
Anyone reading House Of Mystery, Northlanders, or the Unwritten from Vertigo? All three look interesting and may try them.
I read Unwritten #1..... I didn't like it.
But I was just talking to a guy and he said that it started slow and then really got good. He discussed a few plots points and it seemed interesting. But I don't want to read a bunch of not so to get to the pretty good.

Re: What comics are you reading now?
I completed reading the first 3 Incorruptible trades. Not bad. Didn't have the appeal of the first 3 Irredeemable trades but held its own quite well. Have continued to follow Irredeemable while waiting on DK releases but it has been mostly a disappointing read since issue 12. Will continue to read it and add Incorruptible to my monthly reads until the conclusion of the approaching crossover issues. Dropping both after that.
Mystery Men has been ok. Set in Marvel's past with new characters. Will write about it after reading the last issue.
Biggest surprise in quite some time has been the Terry Moore Compete Echo trade. 2/3's through this book and did not expect to like this as much as I have. Have ordered the first two issue of his new series Rachel Rising and added to my monthly reading list.
Current monthly list: Irredeemable and Incorruptible (through the Jan issues), Rachel Rising, BPRD, and Dark Horse Presents.
Dropped: Mystery Men (series concluding) and Brimstone (not impressed).

I read the Morning Glories trade and the story seemed to be a lot less jumpy in that form. I was still confused by the last issue...did we fast forward in time or something? I still was kinda left thinking that I enjoyed the ride but wondered if anything had really happened?

Don't get me wrong, I like Bagley's art quite a bit, but it just amazes me how much this dude, Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne, and Clark Kent resemble each other under his pencil.

I've read the first 5 or 6 TPBs. I LOVE the art. I really like how he draws people in different expressions and postures. I think the art expresses as much emotion as the words do in places. Some of the themes of the book are not my cup of tea, but I have always enjoyed the experience of reading it.

Yeah, it reads a bit better in trade. I feel the same way you do about the book which is why I've stopped getting the singles. Although it's interesting, it feels like the mystery that never progresses.
I'll likely continue ot get it in trade since it's pretty reasonable in that format.

a must read if you love dogs and hate dog fighting rings is Jonny Quest #11. First comic I can remember in a long time that got to me emotionally enough to choke me up a bit. It also had a awesome Sienkiewicz wraparound cover:
