That would be a huge surprise. I'm still not expecting solicits for quite a while since they are still mentioning things like "character designs" on facebook.

I think the previews that just came out is for January books so it could be Feb.etos45 wrote:So definitely no Valiant until after February, right?
I don't have any info at all, but I doubt it's going to be the early part of the year. They ought to have at least the first 2-3 issues of each launch titles completely in the can before even soliciting.
It wouldn't surprise me if having first issues out by SDCC 2012 is their goal, but it also wouldn't surprise me if we didn't see solicits until late summer. Whatever they do, they have to be ready to go 100%. Anything less isn't going to stand a chance.

Re: Interesting posts from VEI on Facebook
I'd like to hope that for as long as they've been saying "2012" that they have more than 3 issues worth done by January (for their launch titles). It just seems to me that they are setting themselves up for an earlier release than summer, but I don't really claim to know anything about anything...400yrs wrote:I think the previews that just came out is for January books so it could be Feb.etos45 wrote:So definitely no Valiant until after February, right?

Re: Interesting posts from VEI on Facebook
Well, if a FCBD issue is the goal, I think those are usually up for solicits much earlier than stuff that usually comes out in May. I think regular May books are solicited in March, but FCBD books hit solicits in February, if not January.
I hope there is going to be some product out on the shelves already to go along with the FCBD book. Otherwise, it's a bit pointless if there's a FCBD issue, but nothing to buy until months later (see Dark Key mistake #1).

I would think having a May giveaway and then launching 6 weeks later would be ideal. Not 12 or 16 weeks later, which DH did.400yrs wrote:Well, if a FCBD issue is the goal, I think those are usually up for solicits much earlier than stuff that usually comes out in May. Re: Interesting posts from VEI on Facebook
Hardcore fans are going to try it no matter what, but I think there's a different mindset for the casual reader - which is who they need to capture.
I'm just thinking like a consumer here, but I think having any kind of delay, even two weeks would likely hurt them. If I get something for free (or cheap) and I like it, I'll go back to the store very soon and see if there's something else to buy because I want to try more to see if it's something I'll add to the pull. If I go to the shop and see that there's nothing available or not available for a while, I'm likely to forget about it and most certainly will not put it on a pull list sight unseen.
In all honesty, I've only bought one book after reading a FCBD issue - Resurrection from Oni. I tend to try things out of cheap bins and then add them to my pull. I'm curious about the rest of you - has reading a FCBD issue ever got you to buy a book you wouldn't normally buy? Specific examples?
I think the ideal situation may be to launch the week of (the Wed before) FCBD and then have the FCBD issue as well.
I don't really see the business sense in giving something for free without anything else behind it.
I'm sure there are numbers out there that could be looked up. I'm sure they are doing their homework either way.

Re: Interesting posts from VEI on Facebook
I don't think I've ever bought a comic after a FCBD book, mostly because we're limited to two books and usually there are titles I already read / plan to read that I grab. Like last year (I missed this year's) I grabber Magnus / Solar and a Spider-Man comic.
As for release, I would prefer there already be comics out by FCBD mostly because I don't want to wait until May to start reading new Valiant.
As to if it will hurt them to launch afterwards, I don't really think it would. You end the free comic with something saying the title launches on a date (probably 2 weeks away) and then the reader knows to come back in 2 weeks to get it. In a way, it's better for new readers because they don't have to go around trying to hunt down back issues and catch up to the stories.

Re: Interesting posts from VEI on Facebook
I know this was from DC so slightly different but I think the Blackest Night FCBD issue REALLY helped that series. It got non-DC fans to try an event (something fans are pretty grumbly about) and then stick with it (Blackest Night did sell like cakes made of lava).Jay Tomio wrote:Never bought a FCBD in my life excluding going back much later and picking up stuff that I happen to have decided collect (like Stuff of Legend). For me it's never been a catalyst, and more of a run/focus completer.400yrs wrote:Hardcore fans are going to try it no matter what, but I think there's a different mindset for the casual reader - which is who they need to capture.

Not saying that's the norm but I think the examples of FCBD issues that actually made waves in any numbers worth talking about isn't large, and I've always thought the the whole idea, while sounding great and certainly feel good, is probably overblown for it actually accomplishes (comic biz is full of such practices from what I can tell). If you want to give me a free comic put that *SQUEE* out digitally, and make sure it doesn't suck.
Re: Interesting posts from VEI on Facebook
Now that I think about it, didn't the possibility of a Valiant FCBD issue come up at this year's SDCC poker game, and it was pretty much shot down by the Valiant guys there?
