I'm on TPB #2. This series is so good. The unfolding of the story is just about perfect.Elveen wrote:I decided to re-read Planetary.
Read #1-3 last night....... better than I remember. I remember loving the pace of Planetary, the way Ellis gives you backstory with current story and then lays to foundation for upcoming stories..... great.

Reading through my IDW Speed Racer trades at the mo since I grabbed the missing books I needed. They reprint the Now series with nicely retouched colours and inks. I have books 1-6, Racer X v1, Chronicles of the Racer v1 (collecting issues from the recent series) and Speed Racer/Racer X: Origins.
I love the fact that some are in bags with £15 stickers on them but I don't think I've spent £15 on the entire lot as they were all pulled from peoples' overstocks and priced dirt cheap. I think the most expensive one was a fiver.

American Son tpb. I had missed this because I thought it was a brand new character that was nothing more than a Cap rip-off. The story was very good. The art was not. The coloring was way off. I don't read Spider-man monthly or anything so I had no idea who Aunt May was marrying. The first shot of the two of them together, the guy looked black. I was confused, and thought, well hey, that's pretty "edgy" for Spider-Man's Aunt. Then I read that the guy was Jonah's Dad and I was thinking, "What?" It all turned out to just be bad coloring. There are many areas where characters melatonin levels change so much I assumed it was someone else.
Why on a title like Amazing Spider-man in the middle of a story arc they know is going straight to a TPB do they not keep the creative team together? Each issue had a different artist.
Again, though, the story was top notch.

Interesting. I didn't really notice that because I read the singles, but I know they were nearly weekly at that point. Maybe they had to use different guys because they didn't have enough time to bank the issues. The writers changed on all the arcs for a while. It kept everything very fresh.dave wrote: Why on a title like Amazing Spider-man in the middle of a story arc they know is going straight to a TPB do they not keep the creative team together? That's because it was written by Joe Kelly.dave wrote: Again, though, the story was top notch.

That wasn't even the best of his ASM stuff.

I think I've read through the first 12 or 15 issues, so whatever TPB that was. I really enjoyed the story and the pacing is not just perfect, but is among the best I've seen from any book in the last twenty years.Elveen wrote:I'm on TPB #2. This series is so good. I Kill Giants from Image is an absolute MUST READ! Trade or HC available.dave wrote:I'd never even heard of him before, but I'd like to read more of his stuff after reading that.
Recommendations?
Four Eyes from Image is another absolutely fantastic book. 4 issue trade available.
Amazing Spider-Man 617 and 625 - Both Rhino stories. Two of the best Spider-Man books I've ever read. All of the ASMs by him were good though.
I'd say all those are damn fine reads. This stuff is all the kind of book you could give to a non-comic reader and they'd probably like them and not think all comics are for dorks.
At DC he is probably best known for his long run on Action Comics. Issue 775 is probably the story that receives the most acclaim. It's a done in one story. I don't care for Supes, but that story is pretty neat.
At Marvel, he is probably best known for his run on Deadpool which pretty much is why the character is popular today..... from his stories. I can't say that I've read any of it though.

Ah, so he's the I Kill Giants guy. Got it. When I see the name Kelly on comics I usually ascribe it to bad art. That must be how I missed this stuff. By the way, it is illegal to call Image books "fantastic". The word fantastic can only be used for Marvel comics. You'll be receiving a letter from Marvel's attorneys.
I'm gonna try to get IKG and Planetary from my library. Thanks guys!

I read all 3 of those this week. Plus Invincible (or was that last week?). 4 ace reads.xodacia81 wrote:Fables 104 and chapters 4 and 5 of War of the Green Lanterns. Fun week.
I'm enjoying the current Fables arc, I wasn't sure if I'd like it at first but it's working well and managing to feel lighter than the last big arc whilst still being deadly serious.
I'm quite enjoying war of the GLs too. It's nice to be reading a HUGE story thats contained in only 3 books a month.
Invincible was interesting but also has me a little concerned, Kirkman's stepping into dangerous territory and unless he handles the current story carefully then he could lose alot of readers, and probably have some of the internet *SQUEE*.

Agreed about Fables and GL. I think Fables has fallen off a little from where it was, although Witches and Rose Red were excellent and on par with much of what came before The Dark Ages. I think Willingham is trying a different direction that just hasn't quite come together the way I think he means it to. As to GL, I think there are 10 issues for this story, so we're halfway through the story. It seems as if its just begun and yet we've had some major developments, some great action, lots of fun and even character development. Best "epic" that DC has tried since at least BN, maybe...dare I say, Sinestro Corps War?ian_house wrote:I read all 3 of those this week. You also forgot his run on JLA which was good (it was IMHO better than Mark Waid's run).
I think (I'm not 100% sure on this) he also did a run on one of the various G.I. Joe books published by Devil's Due and from what I read about it; it's not one his better works.

I think he has done enough to kind of let people know this was coming. If it came out of the blue, I'd think there would be some uproar.ian_house wrote: Invincible was interesting but also has me a little concerned, Kirkman's stepping into dangerous territory and unless he handles the current story carefully then he could lose alot of readers, and probably have some of the internet *SQUEE*.

Yeah it's not the revelation I'm concerned with but how he handles the aftermath.400yrs wrote:I think he has done enough to kind of let people know this was coming. I read Exile which I think is an adaptation, or something that relates to a novel written by Diana Gabaldon (Exile is written by her as well).
It was terrible. It's the clunkiest thing I've ever read. I didn't read the novel, so I had no idea what was going on (it's okay it was a simple TIME TRAVEL story!) The art saw very pretty but did very little for the story.
I was thinking it might be great like Meltzer's comic work has been great. No such luck this time.

Daredevil Legends Frank Miller Vol 1. He didn't write this one, but these are some damn fine comics. The Bullseye story was pretty awesome. I think having Klaus Janson as his inker really just strenghtens the pencils.
To me, stuff like Simonson's Thor is dated and overrated, but this was still a very good read.
