New Atlas comics... What do you think ?

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

New Atlas comics... What do you think ?

Post by Knightt »

Well, there have been #0 issues for The Grim Ghost and Phoenix and. #1 each for The Grim Ghost, Phoenix and Wulf. A number of variant covers (nothing too crazy, I would venture to say JUST enough to make it collectible for me, I.e. Not TOO many), t-shirts and a VERY friendly company president... I am wondering what anyone thought of the first issues and if anyone was excited to read the next issues ?

I have loved Atlas comics since I was a kid and this DU is small enough to fit in a little over half of a short box. With the news and followthrough by ACTUALLY putting comics on the stands, I am pretty excited. I mean faced with a dormant comic line of 30 years and a universe that did not last very long, Atlas has done more In less than a year after the relaunch announcement than Valiant has done in uh well let's say years, plural. The stable of comic character and historic depth not even close to what Valiant had/has, we have comics in hand and if I may say.... They are not too shabby.

I am only in possession of the #0 issues for The Grim Ghost, Phoenix, the Atlas Retailer Sampler and Wulf #1 (my online ordering service must be holding onto them so that I appreciate them much more or something) but I am pleased with all of the issues so far. I have to be honest in that from the Atlas Retailer Sampler, The Grim Ghost's art looks disappointing, especially for a #1 issue but the #0 issue gives me hope that the artist used in the #0 issue will be the main artist for at .east a little while. The #1 GG while a good read was a failure art-wise and I do not see why that was even allowed to be printed, especially in light of how nice the #0 issue was drawn and colored.

Phoenix #0 and #1 (from what I have seen on the sampler looks pretty darn nice and you can tell there was a good amount of time spent to make it look that way, but I get that 'this story is about a midget' feeling when I look at the art. Maybe it is only a perspective thing for me, but that is what I get out of the sampler. Maybe it will change once I have the actual issue in hand and in it's entirety.

Wulf #1 on the other hand took me by pleasant surprise. I am not saying that this blew me away but it really satisfied my craving for a new Atlas book. The art was drawn and colored well (although I would have expected to see debris around all of those craters on the splash page, but the more experience the artist and inker becomes, these things will manifest) and even with a modest dialogue, the initial story was well paced which gave me that 'well damn, I can't wait for the next issue' feeling. I was very pleased with Wulf #1. I hVe heard it referred to as 'just like an Image book'... Well so what ? Like that is necessarily a bad thing ? It suited my needs just fine. I did not expect the ending either which made it a fairly busy first issue. And we get a cool villain ta boot is #1 ?

Well make mine Atlas !

So whatcha guys think ?

For me like i said in another thread, the art isn't up to scratch and the layouts in general need working on, but at the same time they are giving it a shot with characters that hold an interest from old.
I will wait till they have some form of story in each one that i can grab hold or let go and then comment further.

I do however get the buzz when anyone attempts what they are doing.

That IS an endearing quality isn't it ?

I am not ranting that these are perfect books, I think that I am overly critical of them, but it IS a DU that I have loved for years. I only want it to be done right and them not end up as a flop as so many do these days.

 I still haven't received my sampler or an order I placed with the company going on a month now. So for me I am not pleased at all.

Hmmm... I have to say, that is not good news, Bruce.

I guess a friendly reminder to Jason Goodman would be in order. Or have you tried that already.

I think they need to take care of those small details when it happens, but after a friendly reminder i'd be a bit *SQUEE*.

Bruce, send me a pm of what you ordered and i will pass the message direct to Rich Emms on Sunday from you :) see if we can get a result.

Not yet - but if this is my first dealing with a company and I get this kind of service it makes me never want to deal with them again.

Edit: I double checked my Paypal and it has been 2 weeks since I placed my order not a month, but still I have heard nothing. I will give them 2 more weeks then contact them.

I have bought and received packages from Asia within 5-6 days of purchase. 2 weeks and nothing from a company in the states.
