Dini is one of those writers that if I see his name attached to a project I will probably pick it up.
I loved his run on Detective for many of the reasons you detailed - one-shot, well done stories mostly. I grew up watching Batman the Animated Series and I have often heard Dini's name attached to that so I like him already.

I've been getting The Flash stuff since Reborn started, but I actually haven't read any of the ongoing's issues yet, it's in my "to read" pile. I like both GL and GA, but haven't been picking up their stuff, just reading them when they pop up in JLA or some related book. I've really been thinking about picking up some Green Arrow stuff, though, so I may have to scour eBay to see what I can find.xodacia81 wrote:Are you a GL, GA or Flash fan? Flash Rebirth and the new ongoing are both excellent. GL is, of course, excellent, as it has been since Rebirth and Green Arrow...well, Green Arrow is worth hunting down in Quiver/Sounds of Violence/Archer's Quest trade forms.
With regards to Dini, after reading his whole run on Detective Comics, I'm now extremely tempted to go back an pick up Batman: Streets of Gotham. I would add Gotham City Sirens to that as well, but I've heard more than once that it's not that great, anybody got some input on that?
I've got quite a few things to catch up on from lots I've picked up on eBay or things I've gotten from Mile High and My Comic Shop. I've got my aforementioned Punisher War Journal run to read, but I also just acquired the original Megaton Man and Return of Megaton Man series that I'm really excited about as well!

Excellent. If you are looking to go beyond superhero stuff, I'd also suggest Chew and Fables.Jersen wrote:I've been getting The Flash stuff since Reborn started, but I actually haven't read any of the ongoing's issues yet, it's in my "to read" pile. Just read New Avengers 1-64 along with Siege, Siege: Embedded and a bunch of other Siege one-shots.
It was a cool, fun ride with lots of nods to continuity BUT, if you aren't aware of what's going on in the MU at the time of each issue, you'll be very lost - or at least feel as if you're missing out on a lot.
That being said, I then checked out Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet. This was a blast! All ages fun with great action and characterization. Sure it's not set within the mainstream MU but it'll remind you of the fun that comics can be.

I've read the first couple of volumes of Fables TPBs and really enjoyed them. Eventually, I'm going to make it a priority to catch up on the TPB volumes of that title. I haven't read Chew, but I have a buddy that's been reading it and really likes it, so I'll probably get around to it eventually. The main non-superhero books I get regularly are Proof, Glamourpuss, and RASL. I'm also a big Madman fan (which I really do not regard as a superhero book, even if he does wear a costume!).xodacia81 wrote:Excellent. Used to like Madman, back in the day. Proof is a book that I want to catch up on one of these days.Jersen wrote:I've read the first couple of volumes of Fables TPBs and really enjoyed them. Never got GA and dropped Walking Dead a few years back, seemed to be going in circles.
I also pick up JL:Generation Lost, most of the Bat titles and Secret Six.
OOOOoooooh and Invincible and Booster Gold, two of my absolute favs.

I'd probably buy BG if I didn't have the others. I just went back to WD being in trades, as 78, so it's off the list. Flashpoint is going to replace BD, so that's a wash. DCL is done in February, so that's another that is off. I'm a GA fan but if they don't pick things up by the end of BD, I'm afraid that is off the list, too. Same with Flash if things aren't better by the end of FP, although the last 2 issues were excellent, if delayed. I'm keeping the GL books, just because of my need to be a completist. Chew and Fables I'm in for the long-haul. NOTHING could stop me from buying those short of the books being axed/ending or me being totally broke.ian_house wrote:I dropped a couple of those. Chew and Fables are pretty safe for me too. I thought DCL was one of the poorest books I'd picked up in a while, has it improved much?xodacia81 wrote:I'd probably buy BG if I didn't have the others. I'm picking it up mainly for "nostalgia" and completion sake. It's been a strange series. It's sort of like Marvels, done wrong. It needed a tighter focus but the artwork, instead of the story, is the main draw. They've brought in some legends to work on the series and it has been a treat seeing them work on the various characters. The story is just....average. The last two issues were pretty much the late 80's through the mid 90's.ian_house wrote:Chew and Fables are pretty safe for me too. Just read Green Lantern # 60 and Brightest Day # 16. Umm....uh....WOW. Just...wow. They finally got things moving in BD and I think the whole story with Aquaman is about to hit the big time. The ending of the issue can't be what it seems but it has definitely set things in motion for the next 16 weeks or so. As for Green Lantern...
I can honestly say that I had thought that was who it was in the bandages and it makes perfect sense. This new revelation, coupled with word on the upcoming "Civil War" of the Lanterns...makes me very excited for the next year and a half of story. This could be a truly classic storyline if Johns can keep it up. Oh, and as much as I place writing above art...whatever DC is paying Doug Mahnke for GL, it isn't enough. I loved Ivan Reis and Ethan Van Sciver's work on the series but Doug Mahnke continues to knock it out of the park. His Hal Jordan seems to convey more conflict without ever once being whiney. There is a muscular nature to the work that sets it apart from what came before and the level of detail and quality of storytelling/draftsmanship is insane. He's got my vote for artist of the year.

Superboy #1
I've been mentioning lately how I don't typically like Superman stories, nor Superman himself. With that being said, I really enjoyed Superboy #1. The art is nice and clean with bright colors. Really nice stuff. The story is fairly quiet (for a super hero book) like a typical Lemire story. The last page was pretty cool and the teasers looked neat as well.
I have a copy of #2 to come still. Then, I will probably switch over to trade. This will probably be the first DC proper title I buy since I dropped Flash.
If you are a fan of Lemire, I'd recommend checking this out.

Have you tried the current Flash series? I know some complained about Rebirth, but I hear that it reads better as a collection and as that it is the only way I've read it, I can say that I had no problems with it. The main series has been GOOD but not great. Reminds me a bit of the current Green Arrow, in that regard. ALMOST damn good, but not quite and thus a little frustrating. Lemire is the guy that does Sweet Tooth, right? Haven't read any of his work.400yrs wrote:Superboy #1

I enjoyed the interspersed specials far more than the Dark Age; it was so long in coming from start to end, that I really lost the thread of the arcs, and I really didn't think it should have been as long (issues) as it was.Elveen wrote:I just finished the last Astro City Dark Ages mini.
Honestly, it was not good. It pains me to say but, ..... it's been awhile since Astro City has been good.

Nah. After that horrendous Bilson run, the last Flash book I read was Rebirth #3. I did recently pick up the rest of the mini so I'll get around to it eventually. I may try out the new series way down the line.

I still haven't read them. They scare me. I knew Bilson sounded familiar, beyond comics and I realized he was the co-creator of a tv show I used to really like back in the day, The Sentinel.
