Bad News
Just got back from Hastings and they had Solar 1-4 bagged and boarded for $1.99 each. They had Magnus 1 and 2 as well.
I might pick up a few and these discounted prices, especially the one that comes with TWO letters from board members!!!

Not so much bad news as the truth about new product and the way it should be treated when it is no longer sellable.dave wrote:Just got back from Hastings and they had Solar 1-4 bagged and boarded for $1.99 each. They had Magnus 1 and 2 as well.

There is no automatic increase in value with a #1 or any other issue. In the early days of Wizard, some folks sure thought there was. I always will remember Wetworks #1 being priced at $5 a year before it came out.dave wrote:Doesn't there have to be an increase with a #1 since the last issue sold nothing, because there wasn't one which is why the #1 is the first?
Oy.
Sometimes I have to start my posts with "Not speaking at the Overstreet guy..." or something to that effect.
In this case, this is certainly safe enough to put on the record.
Back issue prices are determined by a number of factors. These can include but are not limited to supply of a series or given issue in a store and chain, or supply or lack thereof in the market as a whole. (There also used to be a LOT more regionalism before eBay).
You can have an issue or a series that is "hot" in your store. For instance, a few Black Panther series ago, my friends at Geppi's Comic World in Baltimore used to sell almost X-Men-like number of Black Panther. And yet it was one of the lowest selling Marvels.
Conversely, you can have an issue that is "hot" nationally, but if it's not selling in your store then it's not hot for your market, right?
My first experience with this as a fan was when I got into VALIANT. Because I had bought into a lot of the late/post-Marvel crap about Jim, I didn't start buying Valiant until I picked up X-O #4. By the time X-O #5 came out, had all the Valiant stuff up to that point. Most of the stores I went to knew exactly what they had and priced it accordingly. But one store at which I found about five (maybe six -- I can't remember) of the back issues had them in their 50-cent box. They couldn't sell them.
Later, once I was working as on the Guide, I heard a retailer tell another "I can't sell Marvel Silver Age keys." At which point his colleague offered him Guide prices sight unseen for every one that he had.
Either way, no matter how much we'd like to think otherwise, if a comic isn't a hot comic for someone, it doesn't matter how much we say it is...
