The Future of VALIANT Art Collecting
$2,000 for the X-O #2 cover.
I laughed. I like BWS a lot. Same for X-O. But 2K? Joey bought it. I cheered; a board member keeps our dreams alive.
$2,200 for an UNUSED X-O #1 cover.
Please. If I laughed at the #2 cover opening bid, I split my sides at this price. What a dreamer. Speaking of dreamers...
Albert Moy. $2,500 for HARD Corps #1 cover. $"Something crazy" for Turok #1 cover.
Ridiculous pricing, but hey, that's Big Al's game.
$18,000 for [you get the idea]
Hey, that's a nice car. Or a down payment on a house. Or [you get the idea].
(I have this nasty vision of Joey remortaging his house.)
I thought it would be nice to get board members' opinions on the future. I grabbed another VALIANT cover yesterday for $100. My guess is that it's the last one I'll ever see for this price (though I said that the last time I found one for $100). Now, we have more people interested in VALIANT and it's art than there have been in the past decade. Granted the rights to many characters have just been bought, but the ink is hardly dry and there's already legal controversy.
Do you feel that this little pocket of art collecting that we've created for ourseleves will continue to grow at this rate? I see the Superman and Batman pages and covers going at alarming rates and I figure that's fair for characters who will be around long after I'm gone. But VALIANT characters? They're dead now. If they're revived, they won't be the same. This, I think, presents a situation unique to comic art collecting. Ultraverse and Malibu art doesn't sell for these prices.
So are the 20something of us insightful, early to grab our seats on a train that's picking up steam, or just people being taken for a ride by art "dealers" who will go back to dumping this stuff for pennies when this fountain goes dry?

Yeah I also feel the pricing seems to have sky rocketed on the Art (seems like all comic art) If people keep paying those large prices not much you can do. Personally I think it's crazy money being asked... and spent if they are asking.
I think people wont be so happy down the road paying so much if they are doing it as an investment or think they will easily get what they payed when they are ready to sell.
I would only recomend spending the money if the art is something you dream about and inspires you and you never want to part with it (but you have to be able to afford not getting your money back) ...but thats just how I view buying art, not a business to me. =)

Shoot, dont bet on that one. Will wrote:$2,000 for the X-O #2 cover.

If I knew 1/10th of the knowledge Joey has about the business, I'd quit my day job and set up my own shop. Shoot, if I could come work for him for peanuts and be an apprentice, Id quit my dayjob. (hint, hint) If Joey bought it for $2k awhile back, he'll eventually flip it down the road (if he desires) for far far more.
Nearsighted future, it might look high. But give it 5, 10, or even 20 years. This might look like the deal of the century.
If I was in position to buy it, and he obviously was. I would have done it.

Believe me...for that X-O #0,the wheels were spinning! It wouldn't have been a mortgage, but one of my cars would've left the garage! But I like my cars as much as my art and I got more art than cars!gowaltrip wrote:Will wrote:$2,000 for the X-O #2 cover.

Collecting art is pretty addicting, and unfortunately it get's expensive. There is only 1 piece of original art and there are likely alot of people that would like to own it.$100 for a piece of Valiant cover art is a hell of a deal! Congrats on getting it! Just tell us which cover it was!! And do you want to double or triple your money?!
