Who has read Nausicaa by Miyazaki?
I recently read through the 7 book Nausicaa set in English from VIZ by Miyazaki...
WOW
Seriously, I'm not a big Manga reader, I always liked the film Nausicaa and thought it was easily Miyazaki's best... but the comics are just amazing.
The art is incredible, the story is amazing. The film basically pulls about 30% of the comics and creates a good story. The comics go so much deeper into this world. I wish Miyazaki would go back to this world he created again, but he doesn't seem to be the sequel type.
I think I'd have to rank this story right up there with Pre-Unity/Unity Valiant for my favorite story ever in the medium.

Miyazaki's Nausicaa is simply amazing. And the anime, as good as it is, doesn't do the actual comics justice. Another one like that is Akira. I remember watching the movie and thinking it was good, but not really classic and had a hard time seeing past the hype. THEN read the Akira manga -- holy crap! was that good.Knob wrote:I recently read through the 7 book Nausicaa set in English from VIZ by Miyazaki...

Some of my favorite stories are manga now. A couple of really good stories I've read/currently reading -- Naoki Urasawa's Monster and 20th Century Boys. Monster is being serialized on the SyFy Channel and is staying true to the manga. There are 18 graphic novels in the Viz printings and I think at least 74 TV episodes. Good mystery story. 20th Century Boys is just getting really good and isn't quite halfway finished in manga. No TV adaptation yet.
Another favorite of mine is Adolf by Osamu Tezuka. Some WWII pseudo-historical manga dealing with anti-semitism, nazism, and WWII-era Japan. I couldn't put these five volumes down until I completed the entire story.
I've got more, but these hopefully will spark some conversation.

There was a live-action trilogy of movies made in Japan that adapted 20th Century Boys. I haven't seen them, but I heard they're very faithful to the books.Steve Topper wrote:[20th Century Boys is just getting really good and isn't quite halfway finished in manga. No TV adaptation yet.
You should try Pluto too, it's really good so far (I've only read the first 3 volumes).
And yeah, Nausicaa and Akira are both amazing, some of the best work ever produced in comics.

Have not read Nausicaa but love the movie. Haven't seen a Myazaki movie I didn't like. I do like reading manga and would definitely love to give some of his stuff a go.
I read the first couple vols of Akira a few years back but never finished it. What I read was way better than the film, which just seemed to have too much going on in too short a time. You really have to watch it a few times to get a proper feel for it IMO.

I've read Pluto, another really good story! I'm not a manga expert by any means, but I have read quite a lot of it over the past fifteen years. Adolf really got me started and I've been on the look out for good manga eveer since. Favorite artists have changed over the years with Urasawa my current favorite and Tezuka staying at or near the top the entire time.Ryan wrote:There was a live-action trilogy of movies made in Japan that adapted 20th Century Boys. Is Pluto the reimagnig of Tetsuwan Atom?Steve Topper wrote:I've read Pluto, another really good story! It's Urusawa's take on an old Astro Boy story, ”The Greatest Robot on Earth". Astro Boy is a character in the story, but not the main character. Again I've only read a few volumes so far. I think it's only 8 volumes long and all are out now, a bit shorter than his other stories.Drift wrote:Is Pluto the reimagnig of Tetsuwan Atom?Steve Topper wrote:I've read Pluto, another really good story! The short answer is yes. The longer answer is exactly as Ryan posted. 8 volumes of Urasawa riffing on Tezuka -- how can you go wrong!Drift wrote:Is Pluto the reimagnig of Tetsuwan AtomSteve Topper wrote:I've read Pluto, another really good story!
