Wizard Solar cover art

Post by Crow331 »

OK well I've been sitting on this for months, sworn to not reveal this before it came out, but I just saw the artist posted it on comicartfans sooooooooooo...

Mike Mayhew's painted Solar cover to the Wizard. I have a little more "art" in the photo he sent me months ago and I will post it when I get home to my computer

EDIT: REPLACED THE IMAGE WITH ACTUAL PAINTING

Been a fan of Mike's since he was working with Don McGregor on Zorro. In fact, I think I met him at my first San Diego con when I met Don, 1994 or 1995, but I can't swear to it.

Really liked his Professor X one-shot.

I think it's neat that this was done as more of a Gold Key riff (note the hue of Solar's skin), but I really like it.

To each his own, I guess. I think it looks pretty good.

Compared to the piece above and others by Mayhew, the Doctor Solar is not quite as refined or photo realistic. :?

In my opinion, I like the almost cartoon-like rendering. I find it much more expressive with an almost retro vibe. And while I recognize that the Gold Key covers were more detailed, this illustration feels more Silver Age to me.

Moreover, the other covers for the GK DH books have been so photo realistic that I appreciate the different technique.

I changed out the art to the actual painting he sent me back in March. He was asking $4,500 back then. It says NFS in his gallery but it's actually in his for sale folder and in the classifieds of CAF ....

Someone write him and see what the current price is.

I'm glad to see there are still artists painting for real (and not just on the computer).

I posted this in the Auction Central Non-Valiant section, but sometimes stuff gets overlooked there.
