GL / Brightest Day Questions - **********SPOILERS*******
I'm about halfway through reading Brightest Day #1. I haven't heard much good about it so I was surprised to really enjoy it so far, but I have a few questions:
1. When / what issues or book did Sinestro and the other Lanterns call a truce? When I turned to the second page, I did an eye roll when Hal and Sinestro showed up together side by side. What happened and why?
2. Where is the Deadman character mianly from? What series?
3. I guess Aquaman was dead and was brought back by the white light and that's why he controls dead sea creatures, right?
4. Did they explain the white light or is that what this series is about?
5. Is it only Deadman that has a white ring?
I read the first 3 or so Blackest Night issues until I realized it covered the whole DC U moreso than Hal, Kyle, Guy and the other main GLs. I don't like huge universe books that skip around every 2 pages.
If Brightest Day is going to be a story that focuses mainly on Deadman, I think I'll probably like it..... much like the JLA issues from the recent series that focused on Red Tornado (another kind of B or C list character).
I've noticed not so good comments about #2 in the reading thread...... I've got #2 as well......

Never mind the questions. I'm done with this series.
As much as I loved the first half of BD #1, I hated the second half. It read the same as BN to me. Gets me interested in a good Deadman set up and then goes around the rest of the DCU in boring fashion - Hawkman, Firestorm, etc.
I'm done with Johns stuff. He has story pieces that are brilliant and then a bulk of stuff that bores the crap out of me. It's like he has no focus.

I've given up most mainstream big 2 stuff. I can't get attached to any of it anymore. No more X-Men, Avengers, anything DC. I occassionally buy something just to see if I'd like it. I never do. I've got the recent Avengers #1 to read. Not sure why I even try this stuff anymore...... oh yeah - because it's cheap through dcbs.tmcneil82 wrote:Oh, I thought the spoiler was going to be that non batman dc was STILL terrible.
Then again, I am an x team fan. So what do I know.
this traps me too. I think I have bought every .99 or lower dc and marvel book that's been solicited this year. The second coming storyline in the x universe is really really good right now. And xforce is pretty solid. I haven't read much else that is great though from marvel lately.400yrs wrote:I've given up most mainstream big 2 stuff. I can't get attached to any of it anymore. Maybe I need to stop reading invincible, walking dead, and sweet tooth first

Re: GL / Brightest Day Questions - **********SPOILERS*******
Well, being an old school DC guy I’m enjoying the nostalgic ride. That said...
He was created by Arnold Drake and Carmine Infantino and first appeared in Strange Adventures #205, published in ’67. However, his early years are probably best associated with Neal Adams who penciled Strange Adventures #206-212.

The cover of #207 is especially Iconic and won best cover in '67.
From there the character was mostly used as a supporting character in books like Brave and the Bold and the Batman titles.

In the ‘90s Kelly Jones did a few things with Deadman including a three issue arc in Batman and a two issue mini of his own but nothing much came out of it.

Alex Ross used Deadman in Kingdom Come which was accompanied by an action figure.
In 2002 an ongoing was released but it lasted only nine issues.

More recently, the thirteenth series of Mattel’s DC Universe Classics had a Deadman Action Figure and a variant.

And, he appeared in the Batman: Brave and the Bold cartoon.
All that said, if you enjoy ‘70s Neal Adams stuff like Batman or Green Lantern or Kelly Jones’s take on Batman then I think digging into Deadman may be worth your while.

I can see why some may not care for Brightest Day but it’s too bad that you’ve lost interest in learning more about Deadman. For what it’s worth, Deadman is a fun character that in my opinion has been under used.400yrs wrote: 2. Where is the Deadman character mianly from? What series?

Thanks for the info. Those Deadman pages were about all that I liked from BD #1. I think I have Kingdom Come so I'll see if I can find it.sanman wrote:Well, being an old school DC guy I’m enjoying the nostalgic ride. That said...

Brightest Day is getting excellent. Issue 6 was a pleasure. It has the same feel as 52 did, and like 52, took a few issues to get going.
Yes Firestorm is crap.
1. The truce between the Lanterns came at the end of Blackest Night.
2. I'll leave that to Sanman, he is an ace character.
3. Yeah he was dead and revived. All of the revived characters are having strange goings on with their powers/lives due to the revival.
4. The white light is still pretty much a mystery but more and more is being revealed.
5. Yep.
To be fair I'm absolutely loving Brightest Day (the event). The Brightest Day (series) definitely had a slow start but is now kicking off quite well. The other bi-monthly Justice League: Generation Lost has been absolutely brilliant. The humour is still there but its been interlaced into a deep and well conceived storyline. Max Lord is a great bad guy that is working very well right now.
Birds of Prey was always going to be ace with Gail Simone writing and shes knocking it out of the park.
The Flash is not only beautiful with Francis Manapul's art but also developing into a great book. Barry's back and he's brought the rogues back which for me is a dream to read.
I'm not reading Green Arrow so not sure there.
Basically I can't wait until next week, every week, to get my next dose of the DCU right now.
This week I had 11 comics (a mix of this weeks and last weeks releases) and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch.

Good point about BD & 52 both taking a while to get going. Right now, I'm enjoying BD. It took me about 4 or 5 issues of 52 to really get into it. I think the best thing I can say about "the event" is that you don't have to read the "other" titles in order to get the story. It is pretty much all "right there" in the main book.ian_house wrote:Brightest Day is getting excellent. Issue 6 was a pleasure. I wasn’t paying attention when my comic guy asked me if I wanted Brightest Day. I thought it was another 8 issue story arc. Had I known it was going to be bimonthly I would have passed.
I guess ignorance is bliss because it wasn’t until I began to enjoy the story that I realized how long this thing was—but too late, I was hooked.

Last time I read him, he was black. That firestorm series was pretty good. I don't know about now though.

Combo black and white, now. Prof Stein(I think that's his name) is still around. They are trying to make Firestorm out to be some sort of "Omega" weapon.OmenSpirits.com wrote:which firestorm?xodacia81 wrote:I'm finding him quite annoying, especially since they seem to be setting up an otherwise boring character to play a major role.Unblessed wrote:I hate Firestorm.

Yeah. Both of them are just plain bad characters. Not worth the paper they are printed on.xodacia81 wrote:Combo black and white, now. Prof Stein(I think that's his name) is still around. Stupid looking is only half of it. Let's say Firestorm gets caught in something he can only "burn" his way out of. But, in order to do so, he's using up oxygen and lots of it. So, does he suffocate before he rescues himself? They might as well call him Suicide Man.ian_house wrote:AgreedUnblessed wrote:Yeah. Both of them are just plain bad characters. That might be a good comic. Make it a "Saw" type scenario. It could work. I like it.
