Dark Victory was a decent follow up to Long Halloween. Not as good, but not bad either.

Has anyone read the Impulse series from the 90s? I'm reading through a huge lot of that era Flash and noticed that Impulse was also written by Waid. Was this any good? I've been really enjoying the Waid Flash.

Yep!

Just found it on the shelf without even looking for it. Surprise!

Just finished Local Heroes tpb from Astro City.

These are some of the best stories I've ever read in comics.

Is astro city still going on?

Uhm...why yes it is Dave, a simple search on the internet shows that the series is going on and is currently in the middle of a 16 issue arc called the Dark Ages.

Ha. It's just that you guys usually know all this stuff already-but I found it! :P

I just read the Avengers #1, Secret Avengers #1, Batman: the return of Bruce Wayne #1 & 2, Brightest Day #1 & 2.

Avengers #1 - Written by Bendis. I was initially excited by this, but the story and the artwork made me not like this book. I the artwork was better I might have been more okay with it, but the combination just did not do it for me. I do not plan on continuing to read this series. Also, one thing I have most in comic stories is time travel, and this had it, so done.

Secret Avengets - Written by Brubaker. I liked this first issue and really enjoyed the idea of a covert anti-espionage avengers. Seemed pretty overall cool. I will keep reading for a while.

Batman: the return of Bruce Wayne - Written by Grant Morrison. I hated this book. I read the first two issues and found nothing good about the story. Really bored me to tears.

Bightest day - written by Johns. I really liked Blackest Night, but this story is okay. I plan on keeping up with it to see what happens, but the story is kinda slow and revolves more around deadman than Green Lantern.

I read the JLA: Year One TPB written by Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn and really enjoyed the character development in the story. I would recommend to read but maybe not to keep.

Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine #1 - This was very different from what I expected. Funny, strange, different. The last page includes an appearance by a new version of an old rarely used character / creature.

I never intended to get more than the first issue, but with Jason Aaron writing it, I plan to see people's reactions to the whole series and maybe check out the trade.

Noble Causes Archives and Dynamo 5 trades 1-4 and Annual 1- I've started a bit of a re-reading project to get ready for the new Dynamo 5 Mini coming out at the end of June - Sins of the Father. These books are just fantastic. The kind of super hero books that I pick up and don't want to put down.

Strangers in Paradise - I'm up to Vol 16 (of 19). Vol 16 is Molly and Poo - characters that aren't in the rest of the series. I kind of put the series aside for the time being to finish my Jay Faeber re-reading. Getting to Molly and Poo was like running into a wall near the finish line of a marathon.

Gotham Central - I've got 4 more issues to read to have read the whole series. Good stuff.

I read "I, Zombie" from Vertigo with art by Mike Allred and written by someone I have never heard of. I enjoyed it and thought it was fun. I'll probably pick up the trade.

Ryan Reynolds was the perfect choice for the IDEA of the character, but...well...if you saw Wolverine, what a waste...

Tom Strong's Terrific Tales. Loving the Young Tom Strong and Jonni Future strips. YTS' artwork isn't great but I love the idea of Tom's growing up and exploring Attabar Terru. Jonni Future easily has some of Art Adams' best work. The level of detail he puts in and the obvious love for what he is doing makes his recent Marvel covers look like kiddy scrawl.

One of the Tom Strong strips I read earlier was superb. Told in the form of a poem, it is the tale of a small child visiting Attabar Terru in his dreams with his bed and his stuffed toys as his metaphorical ship and crew. The art was great and the poem itself was so charming it could easily be published as a stand alone childs' book.

Also I like the idea of some of Tom Strong's experiments being slightly morally questionable. One of the stories is about his experimenting with the intravenous application of goloka root (the substance that gives him and his family their longevity). It shows a modern application of the sort of lengths that scientists would have once gone to to gain their answers.

Even though Terrific Tales is not Alan Moore (it is Steve Moore - I assume it is a relative. Also is Leah Moore related to Alan?) it is still a cut above the a large percentage of current writers.

Leah Moore is Alan's daughter.

Deadpool: Suicide Kings is a prime example of the greatness a DP book is able to achieve. However, with the recent glut of DP titles, there are some bad examples out there, too (i'm looking at you Deadpool Team-Up).

His character was utterly destroyed in that terrible Wolverine movie.

I'm not a DC guy but I'm currently reading through Hourman. I remember making fun of his name when I was kid.

The last issue with Captain Britain notwithstanding, I like Deadpool Team-Up.

I'd say it has been the best of the Deadpool books.

I enjoy the main title too and the highlight of that title for me was when he joined the X-Men as well. I just like the Team-Up book the best.

I am buying every Deadpool title they are doing. Even the Lady Deadpool one-shot. I am what is wrong with comics today.

Still working through the Defenders, up to issue #96 right now. Really some crappy writing in some of the earlier issues, the Mandrill has to be the stupidest villain ever, his power is that chicks smell him and fall under his control. Yeah, I know it has to do with his pheromones, but I still think it's stupid.

I am now in the J. M. DeMatteis run, which is fantastic stuff. A big shift in the tone of the book with the focus shifting to the occult stuff and the introduction of Gargoyle. Also really enjoying the art, some of the best stuff from Don Perlin I've seen. Looking forward to finishing this series.

Ahhh the Defenders! I'm looking forward to completing my run and digging through 'em.

DeMatteis hasn't let me down yet! (have you tried his Man-Thing or Seekers Into the Mystery?)
