Shooter talks about working at dark horse . good read

PCZ: Will the new Doctor Solar and Magnus books adhere to the original Gold Key continuity, the Valiant continuity or neither?

JS: Neither. Mike said he wanted it “all new,” while still being true to the original core concepts. It was difficult, but I think it’s better for the effort. I had to rethink everything. Mike chipped in some great ideas. Senior Editor Chris Warner has been a lot of help, too. I think it’s all coming out very well, but you’ll tell us.

PCZ: Taking a look at the art in the Free Comic Book Day book, I found it interesting that while Dennis Calero gives Solar a clean, futuristic look, Bill Reinhold’s Magnus art hearkens back to the original Gold Key style. Can you talk a little bit about how each artist was chosen for their respective books?

JS: I think Mike suggested Dennis and Chris suggested Bill. They’re both very talented. Fine by me. The Free Comic Book Day Special was our shakedown cruise, the first time we ever worked together, and I believe that Dennis and Bill would cheerfully tell you that my full scripts – always full scripts – are very challenging. But we’ve gotten to know each other a bit, now. Wait’ll you see the number one issues.

PCZ: It has been mentioned that in addition to writing these comics you are also “overseeing” the Gold Key characters at Dark Horse. Can you talk about what that entails?

JS: Mike told me this would be the “most entrepreneurial thing” I’ve ever done. He’s left a lot to my discretion. Mike and Chris help me a lot, though, and consult with me about everything. Chris does most of the heavy lifting with respect to the art and such and backstops me when I have my senior moments. I will be laying the foundation for all the characters in the line and working closely with other writers when we get to the point that there are too many titles for me to write them all.

PCZ: So, there are long-terms plans for Solar and Magnus?

JS: You betcha. You don’t actually think I’m going to spill it all now, do you? Seriously, I write an overview for each arc and a plot outline for each story in the arc before I start the first script. I wrote a forty-page Zero Issue origin for Doctor Solar and a sixty-seven page Zero Issue origin for Magnus before I started on the current continuity, just so I’d have everything solidly worked out in advance. Someday, those Zero Issues will be published, but I really wrote them for myself, to make sure I thoroughly figured out who those guys are and why they’re the way they are. That’s what you do, I think, if you are in for the long term.

Michael Komarck's Solar covers have a good retro feel to them, but there's something about Swanland's Magnus that is just so energetic that I just love!

I really can't wait for this book to come out!

Don't believe I've ever read a Shooter interview which wasn't thoroughly enjoyable. Very much looking forward to these zero issues in whatever format they are made available. I believe Jim has stated in the past that he would prefer to avoid the mail-in offers for an issue but can't recall where. Regardless.......

Did anyone else catch that Magnus coming out in August is issue 1 of a 4 issue mini-series?

wha-huh???

Where does it say it's a 4 issue mini series?

Maybe they're doing it by story arcs???.... :?

I picked up the latest "Star Wars: Invasion" this week and that's a new number #1 issue but the inside cover lists it as #6....

That would have to be it. Nothing I've seen in print suggests that Magnus is anything less than an ongoing series. If someone has seen otherwise, please post a link.

Wow, I hope that's not the case that it's only a mini.

The TFAW and DH previews don't suggest that Magnus is a limited series. :?

The current issue of Previews came out Wednesday. It has a June cover date and solicits comics to appear in August.

The very first comic solicited is Magnus on page 28. It is listed as "Magnus, Robot Fighter #1 (of 4)".

56 pages. Full colour. The sale date is listed as August 4.

Page 29 is a preview of Magnus. Page 30 shows Doctor Solar #2 which is solicited as an ongoing of only 40 pages.

I've actually not bought any new comics for a while but I am looking forward to this in August.

I am having mixed feelings about spending $3.00 to $4.00 for new comic books because the books can cost as low as $.50 a few months afterwards.

Is there anyone else in the same boat as I am?

The last 50 Valiant books I have purchased were $.25 to $.50 a piece. (Those books I spent $2.25 to $2.50 when they first came out in 1993-1994)

thats wierd. but shooter has said they would be ongoing series. maybe they're gonna throw a 4-part mini-series out there, involving the mobsters using robots as muscle with the "Big Guns" character story arc, then hit us up with a huge 0 issue with an ongoing issue. either way, magnus will be ongoing. i dont see shooter doing a 4-part mini-series and then thats it.

More like miscommunication. The final word is that the comic is ongoing, but that the story in issue one is 1 of 4 in a storyline. Makes me guess they aim at releasing a TPB later.

A lot of ongoing series from Dark Horse come out as a series of mini-series. They have a new number one every story arc but preserve the ongoing number in the indicia. That's how they did Nexus when they had it. Maybe that's what they're doing here? Sounds like Shooter has a lot of stories to tell :thumb:

That's how they started numbering Next Men about halfway through, back in the day.

Isn't it actually a 5-1/2 issue story arc including the 67 page zero issue and the FCBD story?

:hm:
