The Giffen Magnus Run...discussion of Rai's Outcome
Howdy all,
So, last week I read the much despised Giffen Magnus run at the end of the title.
I enjoyed it as a different take of Magnus, but at the same time felt it cheapened Shooter's original work on the book. Ah well...
My question here, per the subject line, is...what exactly happened with the Rais?
It seemed as if Takashi revealed that the whole reason he treated Obadiah so poory was because he was afraid to take on the mantle himself, and instead of looking weak, he wanted to put on the front that he was a bitter, angry muscle-head of a brother. Did I get that right?
Also, it seemed that this story thread was left up in the air as far as what he and Obie's final conversation was about.
Curious what you guys speculate on that (or even care? Hahahahaha).
I still love the Psi-Lords though...regardless of their supposed take-over of Earth behind the scenes

Just Do It! At least read it once! Lol...dave wrote:I have stared at the next Magnus issue for two nights in a row now and then shook my head, "Not gonna do it."
While it is clearly not early Magnus, it was still fun to see such a different look and take to Magnus. As with most final issues of these Valiant books, they really don't meet good expectations, but it is still neat Or am I just fooling myself?
The best feeling I ever had though was when I got my copy of X-O #68 in the mail and had it in my hand

Yes, it surely is...lol.Daniel Jackson wrote:Those last issues are terrible, but I think they should be read at least once. It will at least give you a greater appreciation for the early runs that Shooter crafted. The difference is like night and day.
Seriously though...I can't wait to see how the new Dark Horse Shooter books are going to be. I pray and hope that this will FINALLY be Jim Shooter's day in the sun He deserves a company like Dark Horse to allow him to see through his vision for once, y'know?

There was an appearance of the greatest VALIANT hero of all time! Yer d@mned skippy it was!xodacia81 wrote:The "Bad Penny" story was particularly good.BloodOfHeroes wrote:Lotsa good Rai stuff in those final issues, slym. Even if they are post-UNITY.
(But that happened in RAI; I'm making a case for the final run on MRF)

Mea Culpa! I just got out of class and my head was swimming when I read your post. I did like what "Old Man Rai" did in the late issues of Magnus.BloodOfHeroes wrote:There was an appearance of the greatest VALIANT hero of all time! Reading MRF 48 right now.
On the cover, Magnus, Leeja and Modra-6 are standing in a sewer. For some reason the sewer was built with a twelve inch drop. Above this sewer there is open space, it is night and three robots are standing there. I think the robots are there to let us know that the artist drew the picture in 1995. January, in fact.
I have no idea where Magnus was standing before he leapt at Modra-6. His feet aren't wet. Not sure how deep the water is. I also can't figure out why Modra-6 doesn't blow Leeja away.
Then there Magnus' hair. He's rocking the white hair. Did they ever explain the hair? Was it brought on by the trauma of being lost at sea for a few days? Then he'd what? Use Grecian formula on the inside covers? Bizarre.
Just wait for some of the dialogue.

he's like 20 years older...seems that was the only way they could "age" him... ...god they get sooooo bad from there...dave wrote:Reading MRF 48 right now.

I have no problem with him getting older, it's just that he's got the white hair on the covers (for a while) but not the interiors. Inside issue 49 he has regular colored hair all the way through, until the last page when Leeja sits on his lap.
Is this a subtle reference to his sexual inadequacies?
Oh, and how did he and torque age close to 20 years in three years? The date on these says 4004 or something!

Here is the plot expo for issue 48...huge splash page. Magnus wearing gold armor over his full tunic outfit.
Magnus: Psi-Lords: has there been a change in status?
Psi-Lord: No. We wishto point out that the situation hasn't changed.
Other Psi-Lord: it's been over three hours since you and the robot leader talked...and we have neither seen nor heard Leeja.
Awesome!
