Re-reading X-O Manowar

Post by Zaphod »

I don't have the complete run but over the last few weeks I sat down to re-read those issues I had read ages ago and the issues I'd picked up but just never read.

Recently released X-O 0-6, 7, 12-27, 29-32, 39, 41-42, 45, 48, 50-o, 54-55, 61, 63, 65-66

I probably didn't to list the entire list off, but I figured in case I missed anything important I could get informed I did. Otherwise, truly the writing was pretty poor after Unity, painful after 32 and unreadable by Birthquake. This is some truly illogical tripe.

I have started reading (for the first time) Acclaims reboot of X-O and it is still pretty comicbooky, but not horrid. Its only been 3 issues though. The X-O concept is interesting, sorta reminds me of Supreme Power and Doctor Spectrum with the way the X-O (crystal) merged with its host.

Yeah, what they did with the book shortly after Unity was a crying shame. It kept getting worse and worse until it basically became an "Image" title. The only glimmer of a good read in those later issues was in #64 when Aric "took care" of Darque.

The #50s to early #60s was just about the worst read ever.

I thought X-O stayed good for a bit (after unity). Having Randy wear the X-O armor was cool. I really, really liked X-O barbarian (what was that like # 9 or something)

In particular what they did to Paul was horrible.
And I don't mean when he sacrificed himself to create the 2nd armor.

The dialogue in the later issues were terrible.

Yep, that would be when the "Image" factor kicked in full force.

I thought XO was GREAT up until around 27, then started going downhill. I do agree that what happened in #64 was awesome. There was just a total lack of grounding and continuity, zero attention to detail in both the story and the art, once "Birthquake" began. Really sad stuff.

I know this thread is a few months old, but, I'm reading XO for the first time (i read issues 1-10 in the 90's). I'm at issue 54 now and I feel like I can't go on..... What did they do!
The early issues were excellent. I didn't mind XO up until birthquake.

Should I go on? There isn't any dialogue in these latter issues! :?

But, yes you need to read until the very end.

Oh lord...the three words that mortify any XO fan, lol. But, yes, as 'Veen says, you must "Read" the rest of the series. Believe it or not, the last 5 issues have a few fleeting moments, particularly #64.

I just read issue 60 and 61 of X-O Manowar...

:|

The infamous X-O Bike, at last. And the "return" of Alloy.

I hope that there is truly some saving grace as I near issue 68. Good lord...lol.[/img]

Yeah, at least that part was readable I suppose. The rest is pure dreck.

The Master Darque appearance was nice, for sure. Except, Paul Gulacy's art in issue 64 was just atrocious compared to his other work :( Could have been the inking or coloring or something.

I have to admit though; I really dug issue 66 which seems to be a "wrapping up" story by Bo' Blayton...lol. I felt all warm inside for some reason seeing the appearance of Dr. Mirage in this story.

I have already read issue 68, so I know where everything is going.

...and the feeling I have is so similar to how I felt reading the final issues of Shadowman and Magnus...

"It's sad how things ended up because these books had SO much potential..."
