Anyone Interested In Scoring Dark Horse FCBD Issue Via Mail?

Post by StarBrand »

I was thinking of letting Roger at horizoncomics, the largest new comic seller on eBay and the one I trust the most, to order a few copies of the Dark Horse FCBD comic for me.
Anyone else interested? Just let me know so I can guage interest in this...
Thanks.

Cool. These guys are the best at shipping and all books they advertise as NM are truly NM.
The one downside on this is their shipping is a flat price of 4.95.
There's always a chance they would have a book or two that the average collector might want to help offset the 4.95 shipping.

No doubt. Now that I think about it we've got a ways to go before it's ordered...after a few weeks to guage the interest maybe I'll send Roger a link to this thread.

I'm interested in some too and any other FCBD release issue. Dark Horse had 2 different FCBD titles last Summer too.

(my local shops have been stingy and impose a 2 issue limit per customer on the books...)

I wouldn't mind paying for good copies either. :thumb:

There are several excellent sellers of new comics on eBay, but in my opinion these guys are the best as far as providing genuine NM copies and all other aspects of what they do.

I'd be down for 2-3, maybe more. Its a far drive to get to a comic shop, so I'll likely need to do this anyway

This is good. Keep it coming anyone who's interested in going through Horizon Comics for the Dark Horse FCBD book. I'll send a link to this thread to them before they order the book...

Buying FCBD books on eBay? Really?

Are we that hurting for good retailers?

The closest drive i have is Eides JC, and its about an hour out. The chances that they will have these left by the time i make it up there is not something I'm willing to bet on.

:? What you gonna do?

Unfortunately yea. There's one store that's been around for 25 years in my area stopped participating in FCBD 2 years ago.

I asked the owner why he stopped ordering FCBD last Summer and he says it doesn't bring him return customers the following weeks. That only that random people would walk in there during FCBD weekend looking for free books and don't come back again. That was his reasoning on it.

Then again, He also eats fast food over the back issues bins and all the old books have 20 year old sticky food stains on them and he wonders why people shop elsewhere. *gross!*

Ebay's been the backup for ordering the rarer FCBD books the last few years for me.

Wow... that's where I went when I was a kid!

This is a fairly creative group. We should be able to think of something better than that!

I’d probably take two—there’s no telling how busy I’ll be that weekend. Last year a friend had to pick up the Blackest Night #0 and ring for me and I totally missed the TMNT #1 reprint.

I agree. But if we don't, I simply must have this issue one way or another...

I'll definitely take three if possible. One for myself and one for my 2 little cousins who are budding comics readers!

That's why a friend of mine who owns a LCS doesn't actively participate anymore. He orders the books and gives a complete set to his regulars and subscribers and a few extra, but he doesn't advertise or anything. He says that people would come in and get one of each of the free books and he'd never see them again.

That line of reasoning makes me crazy. It's marketing. What marketing works 100%? I can see a store not participating if they flat out can't afford it, but EVERY single store I know that puts some real effort into it ends up with new customers.

More and more the publishers are figuring out that it's a great way to launch new series...

As a creator and as a marketing guy, man, this is a frustrating subject!

I know a lot of LCS owners that think the same way as that guy. If you're not ordering tons of books from them, they think you're just a bother.

Oy. These are the people who used to work in record stores and whose idea of sales was asking "You still listening to that?"

I would be more than happy to hook you guys up with these, and would charge less than $4.95 for shipping.

Though I guess on the flipside of that I would need to cover the cost of each book, as I'm not going to benefit by giving them away to people who don't shop at my store...

Any thoughts?

As a retailer who participates in FCBD, I see both sides of the coin

1) There are a lot of people who come in, grab their free stuff, and walk right back out the door, never to be seen again. Often they have kids with them. They use FCBD as a way to give their kid something, but not have to pay for it. Which does rub me the wrong way, because if comics are something your child is interested in, you as a parent should be willing to do whatever it takes to positively reinforce your child's interest in reading. It's better to have a kid reading and using their imagination than having them sit in front of a tv or playing video games all day.

2) There are also a lot of people who come in, get a couple free books, then end up spending a good chunk of money. We started running sales the past couple years, as well as bringing in a creator or two to sign books and talk to our customers. Last year we had Jason Aaron come up for the day, and we had a huge crowd and the best FCBD so far sales wise. Unfortunately we all went to see the Wolverine movie afterwards, which brought the day to a skreeching halt

I think if retailers promote it properly and spark the interest of people by doing something other than just giving out free comics, FCBD can be a very successful idea. But it sounds like a lot of retailers are just too lazy to do it that way, which, is their own fault...
