I recently bought a collect of Previews from 1989 to present to document Valiant history. Here is The first year. Some interesting information regarding Magnus 0.

Due to this change, all of Nintendo titles will restart at Vol 2 #1 (with the first two issues unavailable in the direct market), reprinting previously published material through the sixth issue. New material begins with the seventh issues, along with the premiere of their first non-Nintendo-related project, Magnus: Robot Fighter.”

I wonder what the format would have been for those Magnus and Solar reprints. Did they have any pictures with the solicitations? Anyway Interesting stuff, Thanks

The Magnus would have been a Soft Cover 8x11 FC and does show a picture that looks like an old Gold Key cover. There is a caption on the cover: "This is it! The origin of Magnus by popular demand, we present this reprint of the very first issue of Magnus" The cover image is not the same as the Gold Key Magnus 1.

The Soalr would have been the same format and 96 pages. The cover image it shows has the Solar title letters the same as they were on Soalr #47, which is kind of strange. The image is like the Divinchie (sp) man in the circle except it looks like an xray as you can see Solars bones.

It's weird to see their game plan change concerning the Magnus and Solar reprints. You could tell that there was a little bit of confusion going on around Valiant in the beginning as to the direction they were heading. I wonder what they would have been able to accomplish with Lost in Space? Seems like an odd choice for a Valiant title. Probably a good thing it never got published.

Lost in Space? That's cool. I like thinking about these different properties Valiant was going after. Wasn't Harvey the big one? That would have been interesting to see how Shooter handled that. And I was looking at some old Gold Keys and I really think they could have fit that Samson book into the continuity and made it an interesting read.

It explains how a rumor was started that Magnus #0 without card was
"fifty times rarer" than Magnus #0 with card. I always knew that rumor
was ridiculous, but at least I now know where the number 50 came from.

Now, some have said that the "without card" version was definitely
printed at 10% of the Magnus #1 printrun...
and since Magnus #1 was about 89,000 copies...
we've used 8,900 Magnus #0 as the print run for those without card.

But we've assumed/heard that dealers got 1 Magnus #0 for every 10 Magnus #1 they ordered...
and that doesn't seem to be the case.
If they only bought 10 copies of Magnus #1... they didn't get any Magnus #0.
In fact, it looks like they could have bought up to 49 copies of Magnus #1
and still not received a Magnus #0.

So... there were definitely dealers who didn't get a single copy of Magnus #0...
and so there were definitely less than 8,900 copies EARNED by retailers.

The question is... did they actually print 8,900 without card?
If so, how were the "extra copies" distributed if they weren't earned by retailers?

The number "with card" is 9,400 based on statements from Valiant employees
who handled/remembered the coupon redemption counts...
but I wonder if the 8,900 number is just based on 10%, or if it is accurate.

Bah, the w/o card versions are less cool anyways. But from what I read and understood there are definately less then 8,900 copies of Magnus #0 w/c card floating around. The question is "do we care"?

At least 3 of the Previews from 1991 had some nice inserts promoting Magnus and Solar. One of them even had a panel from Solar AO.

I will get to those soon. I flipped through them and there is much more ads from Valiant and alos a few inserts as you mentioned.

So that's why there are 2 volumes for some Nintendo books.
